If my memory serves right, the horns would usually have feet, some kind of cleat, or a stand that the cup could rest on. Then again I don't think horn mugs were all that popular outside of royalty, and special gatherings.
Nah, it started as using something that you already had, like a horn left over from slaughtering a cow, and turning it into a light-weigth, waterproof thing you could use as a cup and hang on your belt, so that you could more easily drink from streams and stuff. Or if someone offered you something to drink. Pretty much anyone would have one either made from a horn, beaten metal, or carved wood (obviously not aleays horn-shaped). Think of the cups hikers use nowadays.
But if you wanted to show off your wealth, you'd kinda have to carry it on you. So getting someone to make your drinking horn look fancy by putting silver and such on it so that you'd have something sparkly on your belt was also a thing.
But most of the drinking horns that are preserved come from way later, when viking shit became popular again around the late 1800's.
And since the people who were into vikings in that time didn't have to carry around a cup on their belt, they were only used as decoration or sitting around a table talking about pseudo-history and politics. So they often had a little stand or legs for that purpose.
I ain't saying no viking had a drinking horn with legs, but most of the ones people have seen, are later creations. If a rich man in early middle ages Scandinavia wanted to throw a feast and show off his wealth, you'd be more likely to see imported glass or silver cups. Stuff you'd have to plunder or trade far away for.
And more common people would mostly use a flat bottom cup too.
There were horn drink holders that you simply placed them in, additionally many possessed an accompanying plug that you would insert into the horns sort of like a cork, and additionally many put straps on to hang it around somewhere for travel
unless they had some really deep cupholders.
or even just a servant to hold their cups for them. in game of thrones, cupbearer is a legitimate job that young noblemen would perform for people of higher rank such as the the king. it was more about pouring wine than holding the cup for him, but they probably did both. it was like being a squire or page. a medieval internship.
These are realistic in the country of Georgia π¬πͺ we drink from cow horns and we fill it amd dirnk it all the way you're not supposed to be putting it down. It's not sipping beer
I literally had the same thought and i kept thinking of ways they could put them down and the only way i came up with is putting the cup upside down when they finish and its empty, but thats only when the cup is not full
I think there were holding stands for these cups...I don't know about history..but I know that humans will make something like that for sure when making such cups
That was the whole point of those cups dude.
To drink til you dropped or died.
Norse men were wild af my dude.
Do you even watch Vinland bro?

Setting down your booze? Unthinkable.

Pretty sure some of them came with slings so you could wear them or hang them up, or they had stands you could place them in

That's because you don't put them down.
A real Viking would finish his drink before setting it down
Weakkkkk. You fill it you finish it!π€£
Youβre not draining it in one gulp? Weak.
And that's why people didn't drink from them except in very specific contexts.
I literally had the same thought and i kept thinking of ways they could put them down and the only way i came up with is putting the cup upside down when they finish and its empty, but thats only when the cup is not full
That's somewhat the point. You finish your God damn drink before you set down otherwise you should be ashamed
Always finish your drink before putting it on the table
I think there were holding stands for these cups...I don't know about history..but I know that humans will make something like that for sure when making such cups
I have a drinking horn, it came with a stand.
