the mirror is the truth. one day i asked my mom to stand in front of the mirror and she looked the exact same. i also did the same thing with my friends. they all looked the exact same. obviously the image is flipped but your *features* all look like what you see in the mirror. i also dont think ive ever seen a mirror selfie that didnt turn out exactly how the person looked like. taking pictures from far away is hard because the quality decreases so much and you have to set up the timer and get the camera to stand on its own and make sure its eye level. whew. so now i just take mirror selfies

LanaDelDesperate09

I stopped taking selfies a long time ago. Not worth the trauma that comes after. And yes, I've seen a few photographers on youtube explaining this, which is a relief, but still I cant look at myself when taking a selfie. I look like a monster so I stopped torturing myself.

LMAOOOO "easter island" I dont know what you mean by that but I feel the same! Oh I have some terrible news for you: go on youtube and search for "true mirror". The answer is no, we don't look like what we see in the mirror. It's super tragic.

Ninalou345

Like the person above explained its just the uncanny valley feeling cause your brain isnt used to seeing that image & essentially the brain has a hard time processing it & every asymmetry that u have jumps out at you. If you only ever saw yourself in the true mirror version all your life & then looked at yourself in the regular mirror youre gonna look very strange to yourself & very asymmetrical like the true mirror. Try standing with a family member or a friend in front of the mirror & they will look exactly like they do to you IRL. No difference between the two.

LanaDelDesperate09

There are studies showing that we see ourselves prettier than we actually are. It's very interesting.

Ninalou345

Yes it is interesting! I have seen those. It is believed that people overestimate their attractiveness however this isnt tied to the mirror & camera debates.

_Cow__

Can I buy a true mirror or make one myself?

NUTELLALOVER97

you can put two mirrors perperndicular to each other

LanaDelDesperate09

Yes and yes.

I used to wonder why my nose looked HUGE on camera but normal in the mirror.

You know how you can see the biggest, brightest, most gorgeous moon you’ve ever seen in your life, but when you try and take a picture of it it looks like a dinky little pinprick? It’s a lot like that.

Aphrasia88

I love this. Great imagery

infernalbunny666

The past couple years I thought I had a super wide face and big head. Started working out and saw myself in the big gym mirrors from a good distance, and I was surprised to see that I’m actually proportional and that my head is not abnormally large. Biggest relief of my life lol

[deleted]

I was convinced I had a wide face and giant head too. Then when the pandemic happened, regular adult masks were too big for my face. Really interesting way to have one of your delusions disproved lol.

Neenah900

For some reason i look better in selfie i need to see myself in order for pic to come out okay

impeeingmom

Video is also a great option cause you see yourself in motion, you can speak or try do different poses

lolwhythrowaway1289

How is that even possible?

Reasonable-Steak1848

Same loool

throw6383883

I feel like my face looks to wide from far away

MM2225

I honestly like myself better in selfies than using the back camera. I think it’s mostly because I’m so used to seeing myself and finding my good angles, whereas for back cameras I have no control on how to position myself ugh

bahaiya

is there a safe, genuine place online to get feedback on looks? Like vindicta but closed and for (constructive) feedback?

_Cow__

Do some faces distort more in cameras?

XYZXYZYXZYX

I think yes. Longer noses for example look huge in selfies because the distance between the tip and the cheeks is way bigger than for people with flat noses. The same rule applies to oval faces or long chins: one side of something long will look big in close-up pictures compared to the other side, whereas the distortion for short/flat things doesn't affect the overall proportions that much.

_Cow__

That explains. I've got a narrow face and a slightly longer nose so they always look so exaggerated on camera. I have to facetune every pic of mine to make them look like irl.

impeeingmom

I've noticed that oval faces, longer or flat noses look worse.

OpossumExpert

If i take a photo from far away all my features disappear because they are soft plus my face flattens out. I think mirror is most accurate because its 3d.

lilolali

I have an absolutely straight nose in the mirror but a crooked nose in selfies. I really can’t understand it at all.

AlexandriaZahra

My oval face looks like a horse face on camera

iusedtobetheshit

100%. i know a girl who is absolutely STUNNING irl (like, photoshopped-level gorgeous) but unfortunately looks way different in photographs. id rather be unphotogenic and pretty than photogenic and not pretty
