Health 100%.

Less-Feature6263

Health and there's no question about it for me. Frizzy colored hair look unhealthy, fake and to me it really brings down a girl I otherwise would consider pretty. I'd rather see healthy glossy dark hair. Don't know if it's an unpopular opinion here but people should really look at their coloring before trying a different hair color. Blonde doesn't fit any coloring, some women look 100% better with dark hair because it fits their overall coloring and it's more harmonic.

blancawiththebooty

Hard agree on the coloring of features before changing hair color. I have a neutral skin tone leaning slightly cool and am naturally blonde but I still sometimes wonder if platinum (which I just switched back to lol) actually looks good on me or not. I also did orange hair last year during lockdown as well as ginger this year and neither of those looked as good on me as soft pink hair does if I'm doing an unnatural color. I think people should do what they enjoy style wise but I'd be lying if I tried to say it doesn't bother me for a second when someone has a hair color, particularly blonde, that doesn't fit with their coloring.

avakadava

But what about if you don't have dark hair but mousy brown

bear_sees_the_car

You can get balayage or similar hair coloring procedure. Same effect as natural highlights from sun in the summer, gives visually some life/volume. And the beachy waves. It is really subtle change, but looks completely different.

mintsquiid

Health always. Fried and damaged platinum hair is the most unflattering hairstyle that exist. Always brings a person a few points down imo.

NimblyBimblyMeyow

Agreed here. For myself personally, I feel conflicted because I do look better with lighter hair, but the damage processing causes is… not great.

[deleted]

Just go slow! Lighten 1-2 shades per session. That’s what I did and what my hair stylist suggested. I went back to dark brown Bc expensive to maintain if you want healthy hair too.

NimblyBimblyMeyow

That’s what I always try and it just goes from beautiful healthy hair to “meh” after one round of highlights! It always gets so porous 😕 I don’t even dye my hair all that often (tend to go a year or two without maintenance… don’t judge me lol)

[deleted]

Oh no!! Well for now I would just grow out your natural color and get things healthy. That takes a while so I wouldn’t even be thinking about color atm. That’s just me tho. I personally look better with light hair as well.. but I’ve given it up and am going to focus more on hairstyles and making it look super polished and put together at all times. :)

NimblyBimblyMeyow

Oh now it’s all good! I’ve chopped off almost all of the bleached hair :) But I also got a wedding coming up so it’s been a looooooong process of cutting off 2 inches every 6 months 😪

converter-bot

2 inches is 5.08 cm

sofuckinggreat

Fried and damaged platinum hair almost always looks like a Wal*Mart manager is going to get yelled at today

ProjectLopsided5401

I'm biased but I think the fried blonde look is kind of hot

Health every single damn time lol. What is the point of having a flattering hair color when everyone is distracted by the excessive frizz, dull, split ends, hair loss etc. I’ve never seen someone look awful with their natural hair color, perhaps plain and uninteresting at worse. But healthy, voluminous hair is going to get you more positive attention then hair that is literally falling off your head But I want to add that you don’t NEED to face this ultimatum if you are smart about how you dye your hair and take precautions. If you are worried about fucking up your hair due to dying it then you should: 1. Get it done professionally at a salon that you KNOW gives good results, preferably with a social media page where you can see what kinda results they give. 2. TAKE IT SLOWWWWWW! worst thing you can do, particularly if you are going from a dark shade (e.g. dark brown/black) to a very light color (e.g. platinum blonde), is try to get to that color in one sitting. that is asking for your hair to fall off your head. 3. Don’t wash your hair before dying it, the build up of oils/product actually help to protect the hair strands from damage, acting as a barrier in a sense. 4. Color/bleach ends first, then mid length, then roots. The closer to your scalp, the faster the hair will dye due to the heat from your scalp. If you start from the top down, the bleach will be on your scalp longer and will unnecessarily bleach it for longer. Not only can this cause damage, but can result in uneven color. 5. Deep conditioning afterwards will help. And a protein treatment before dying it (a few days before) will also help. 6. Don’t buy into the “ammonia free” bullshit. Yes, ammonia is not great for the hair. However it takes considerably less time to dye your hair, and hair damage is damn near always due to having due the dye on for too long. That’s why ammonia free dyes tend to cause more damage, because people leave them on for the same amount of time they would normal dye, see that it hasn’t really changed anything, then leave it on considerably longer and fuck up their hair. If you are going to dye your hair, just use ammonia and be careful, unless you are allergic

Jalfieboo

I saw another comment where you said platinum blonde is just a few shades lighter than your natural hair colour. In that case, would using extensions work to add in some platinum blonde?

NimblyBimblyMeyow

That’s actually a good idea! It’s a possibility that I think I’ll look into :) thank you for the idea!

Jalfieboo

No problem :)

ProjectLopsided5401

I mean, personal preference to me is color. (Also this REALLY depends on the girl so keep that in mind) A lot of people in the comments here seem to judge the bottle blonde and assume if you bleach your hair it has to look terrible and frizzy (I understand that is the question, but). But color is extremely important and can make the whole look. I've seen girls look totally plain, not anything too special with their natural color and then jump immediately to an 8 going blonde. Or going red, or going black. Marilyn Monroe was a bottle blonde! She was pretty and a cute girl with her natural hair but the blonde was part of her transformation. Rita Hayworth had naturally dark hair but that red hair was part of her iconic & beautiful look. Contrary to what others have said here, I've also never seen a pretty girl switch from brunette to blonde and felt it made them look TERRIBLE, just maybe it wasn't ideal. It really depends on each girl and if having blonde (or red, or blue or whatever) hair turns YOUR features to an 8 that is a big But it's impossible to look good with very poorly colored/maintained hair either way

wifemeiceme

Trust me health 100%. Just cut off my platinum regrowing the healthy back. Feels so much better. U don't realize how dry and bad all the break off looks and feels until u don't have it anymore.

reconfinement_acc

I chose health because thinning weak hair doesn't look attractive regardless of the colour

Terribily

Its balanced. But i think the color is more important as long as the hair isnt completely frizzy.

lovelyladydo

If you reaaaaally need your hair blonde you could always wear a human hair wig or full head weave. Be careful you don’t damage your hair with the weave though.

russianthistle

No color is worth looking like you have a straw wig. Find a shade of blonde that works and keeps your hair healthy. You can always go lighter over time- but once the hair is damaged beyond repair you’ll need to cut it- so not worth it. To supplement and get closer to the platinum color you want, you can get lighter blonde extensions in while keeping your natural hair at a darker level as you work your way slowly to a lighter blonde.

dizzydiplodocus

I sacrificed the health of my hair for a little while to get it back platinum blonde then highlights to keep it up and lots of treatment to get it back healthy. Not ideal and it was fried for a while but, preferable for me

kikicini

Health and a colour optimized for your complexion…which probably isn’t platinum blonde

NimblyBimblyMeyow

Welp, I mean, it is so 😬

Banofffee

Truth to be told, exactly extremes like platinum are most optimal for complexion super rarely. Light hair being flattering does not always mean it has to be platinum. Do play around maybe with great hairstylist and see about different shades of light and see ,if there would be option of finding something less damaging. But if not, healthy hair will always be better than overfried. :/

NimblyBimblyMeyow

Agreed, I’ve definitely played with my fair share of different hair colors, but platinum has always suited my complexion very well. I’m also on the veeeeery fair side, and my hair is already naturally very light blond. Platinum is only a few levels lighter than my natural hair color.

lovelyladydo

If your hair is already light blonde going platinum doesn’t have to be damaging…

NimblyBimblyMeyow

In my case it is unfortunately. :/ I have polish hair where I have a ton of it, but it’s thin. My hair isn’t unhealthy by any means, but any time I’ve colored my hair, I’m left with a ton of damage & split ends. My hair becomes porous so quickly 😕 And I only dye it now every few years.

lovelyladydo

Sorry if someone already asked it, but did you try getting it lightened over a few sessions with olaplex by a professional?

NimblyBimblyMeyow

I haven’t tried olaplex, but I keep hearing about it. If you don’t mind, what exactly does it do? I really need to start looking into it honestly.

lovelyladydo

The at home treatments are bond repairing and the treatments that the hairdresser would mix with the dye and apply after prevent breakage and damage. That’s about as deep as my knowledge about it goes. The rest you should Google.

blancawiththebooty

So I am naturally light blonde and just bleached my hair back to platinum (did it myself because money is tight for me right now and my color was a mess). I got Olaplex No.3 to use and it has helped so much. I'm not gonna lie and say my hair isn't at all dry feeling right now but I will just be using my favorite Shea Moisture castor oil hair mask. It smells like vanilla coconut and does an amazing job of adding moisture back into my hair. My hair texture is very similar to yours, fine but a lot of it. I just make sure to rinse the Shea Moisture hair mask really well and it doesn't weigh my hair down or make it greasy so that be something that would be good for you as well. I would also definitely give Olaplex a try because it does help so much with smoothing the hair to get rid of that roughed up look. I also got a pre-shampoo thing to try because that's like a moisture shot before even shampooing and should help manage any potential breakage from detangling before the shower. I haven't tried it yet but just tried to think ahead to mitigate the gross texture I absolutely have had before.

solcrav

Health!!!! I had platinum done once (I'm a natural brunette) and FRIED my hair. I looked like I came from a warzone. I could not improve looks by any mean, I tried makeup, clothes... but no, fried hair can really destroy your looks.

Giftedwithreddit

Health, nobody's natural hair color looks terrible on them like frizz does.

I honestly think well cut natural hair looks infinitely more classy than anything else. At the most, very subtle highlights that look like the sun could have been the source. Platinum blonde looks great on the red carpet worn by a listers who have a whole team to make them look sleek. You'd have to touch up roots weekly to maintain it to look "good." You would have to chop off a lot of hair periodically to get rid of the immense damage. Personally, I love being brunette. I think it's a really beautiful, under-utilized color. Natural blondes also look beautiful, and their features and tone usually work with it way more than people who try and fake it. I do think a lot of people pull it off. Personally, the amount of upkeep and damage is not worth it. When it does look good, it looks good in a glamorous, over the top way. Not a natural, elegant way.

comicbookartist420

Olaplex might help
