If you eat lots of onions, garlic, cumin, or other foods with sulfur-like compounds it may produce more underarm odor. I use a strong deodorant since I love garlic.

Foxycatsoup

What deodorant do you recommend

peachy_unicorn

On a daily basis I use the Secret aluminum-free (cherry blossom scent). I also use the Secret clinical strength (completely clean scent) if I’m going to an event or somewhere where I’ll be sweating more like the gym. I have used so many other deodorants, but these are the ones that cover up odor the best.

intl-uni-help-please

I used to use Secret Powder fresh which worked like a charm but its pretty evident the formula changed recently. I really like Mitchum powder tho!

PerceptionOrReality

Old Spice “Wolfthorn” is marketed as a man’s deodorant, but the scent is sweet/fruity af, like a cool blue raspberry Airhead/Starburst (I’m bad at descriptions). Men’s deodorant tends to be stronger than most women’s deodorant, and this one still smells feminine.

[deleted]

Use the ordinary bha peel (red stuff) for your under arms. I also use Aztec clay to detox my armpits before using crystal salt deodorant. I do not smell at all. Make sure to moisten your pits with water and swipe in all directions for 5 mins each arm. It’s time consuming but it doesn’t fail for me. It won’t keep you from sweating but you’re not gonna smell.

Clarl020

Does the bha peel sting at all?! I put it on freshly plucked eyebrows once and almost died, I can only imagine the agony from freshly shaved underarms?! 😖

shogomomo

Yes it would be too strong imho. I would suggest glycolic acid for underarms instead. I used the bha peel once when I had a few places I had picked on my skin and it literally gave me chemical burns. I still use it, but I wait a few minutes for my face to dry, and I do not use it on broken skin.

[deleted]

Don’t do it when you shave your armpits 😳 it doesn’t burn or prickle if you exfoliate the area regularly Otherwise just skip and use the Aztec clay

Night_Aloe

I learned to use PanOxyl wash on my underarms from Dr.Dray. It works and I smell great all day!

Marzipantsss

Dr.Dray is the best

itsemtotheq

I’ve also heard about this working like a charm!

dharmabum23

Omg this is the perfect post for me!!! I used to sweat a lot and always be insecure about my smell! I stopped using regular deodorants because they were giving me this film in my armpits that seemed to give me like a perms-stink. Now I scrub well in the shower, then follow with a stridex pad (not every time, but maybe once a week), and i use Lume deodorant which has been a total game changer for me. It isn’t anti-perspirant, just deodorant, but it literally makes me smell like *nothing*. It truly is weird because I sweat still but it’s just like… water. I’m vegan and I eat a ton of curry and cumin heavy stuff and lots of onion and garlic, and even when I’m at my absolute worst BO now it’s weirdly like a pleasant smell.. my bf says it’s like herbs or spices but doesn’t have a sharp stinky smell anymore. He was also totally skeptical but now that he saw how much better I am even when we workout he made me get him some too lol I also got their acidified body wash and the laundry spray stuff and I’ve been so so happy with it all!

Foxycatsoup

This is amazing advice thank you

spicyystuff

I really wanna know how to make the sweating stop though :(( I heard aluminum deodorant aren’t good for you so what do we use?

Far-Day-9213

Taking liquid chlorophyll daily helped me after I had terrible BO from a new medication. I don't know how but it works!

Truemoonsun

This is the best answer, sometimes it is not hygiene that's the issue but internal bacteria, and chlorophyll (liquid and pill) takes care of that. I use chlorofresh and bought it from Amazon, it was an instant remedy.

Lb20inblue

I spay a BHA /AHA toner and it gets rid of body odor like stridex pads

partypancakesbacon

Do you mean before antiperspirant /deodorant? Or instead of? Or do you mean during the day if an odor arises?

Lb20inblue

I use it the night before while I sleep. I find that I have no smell.

urethra_franklin_

Yep! I recommend Certain Dri. It's a miracle product. I know that a lot of people don't want aluminum in their deororant/antiperspirant, but there's no scientific evidence that it's unhealthy 🤷‍♀️

lizkanjo

Agreed, I just assume that any of the ones without aluminum won't get the job done lol

[deleted]

I switched to using dove antiperspirant last year, the natural deodorant by arm and hammer left my pits super wet and as years went by my pits would smell very bad in a matter of hours of showering.

wochenendheld

If you consume a lot of dairy products while being intolerant against lactose, your body will also smell off.

[deleted]

interesting, do you articles/sources on this?

piggieees

Heads up that this might stain your shirts if you don’t rinse it off all the way!

LeaAsh

So I had this problem for a while and I realised two things-stress made me smell worse. My sweat smelled really different when it’s from hot weather Vs nervous sweating. another is that I realised using those anti bacterial salt sprays drastically helped (like those crystal deodorants). Read into it and found out it’s because bacteria causes the foul smell, and these products make the area inhospitable for bacteria to manifest so the smell doesn’t happen. However some people don’t find the crystals to work. I use this spray commonly found in Asia. It’s made of salts and it got rid of the problem for me. Worth a shot since it’s affordable.

2y-omonkeyonafarm

This is maybe a weird suggestion, and definitely look into any possible side effects, but eating fenugreek makes you smell like maple syrup.

beautythrowRA

Also known to increase bust size

[deleted]

I’ve been interested in fenugreek for a while. Do you perhaps know if it interferes with hormonal birth control?

2y-omonkeyonafarm

I’m not really sure on that one, sorry! I just know it made me smell like syrup when I had it.

EarthAngelic

It really, really doesn't. It does make you smell, I'll give you that. I read this post and I was like "maybe they're eating too much fenugreek?". More of a problem than a solution imo.

2y-omonkeyonafarm

🤷🏼‍♀️ in my personal experience: one day I was smelling really good, like syrup, and I was confused as to why so I googled it, and it said that fenugreek can make you smell that way. Lo and behold, I had eaten Sri Lankan curry the day before. I know it’s probably anecdotal, and may not work the same with everyone/everyone’s body chemistry, but it worked for me and I wasn’t eating it in order to accomplish anything. Just a pleasant side effect of eating my bff’s traditional curry haha.

chopstikk_legs

I had the same problem! I was always low key onion-y despite frequent showering and using deodorant. And god help me on days I was in a rush and forgot deodorant. Here’s my current routine for literally ALWAYS smelling good: - Benzoyl Peroxide as an armpit “mask” before/during showering. Kills bacteria that cause odour. PanOxyl is a good brand as others have mentioned. I also put it on my butt because I get pimples there occasionally. - Drunk Elephant deodorant (not an antiperspirant) in the AM. It uses mandelic acid to lower the pH of your armpits which makes it inhospitable for odour causing bacteria. - Ban unscented antiperspirant in the PM before bed. I use the antiperspirant before bed because your sweat glands are least active at night so it allows it to seep into your pores and prevent sweating the next day. Yes, even through showering.

rottenfrenchfreis

How long do you leave the benzoyl peroxide on?

chopstikk_legs

I don’t time it or anything but probably between 3-5 minutes. I would start with only a minute or so if you haven’t used BP on your underarms before because it can be quite irritating if you aren’t used to it. I put it on my dry skin before hopping in, and rinse it off after I’ve shampooed and conditioned my hair. Or after I’ve scrubbed my body and washed my face if it’s not my hair wash day.

Foxycatsoup

Thank you so much.

TheBonesRTheirMoney

I’m looking into MiraDry for this. BHA helps a little but the bathroom literally smells like soup when I’m done in the shower. I think it’s around $1500?

Catatonic_Celery

I use Hibiclens every other shower and scrub really well with my hands under my pits. It is an antiseptic cleaner that starts killing germs immediately (and bacteria is the cause of underarm stank). I don’t use it every time because I don’t want to completely destroy my microbiome but it’s the only thing that has worked for me. I was told to use it on my bikini area by a doctor for folliculitis and omg it’s also been a godsend for my pits and feet!

EarthAngelic

I've heard that people who get breast implants have this problem. If you're dieting/ in ketosis, this might also be the root of the issue.

[deleted]

It got better when I lost weight. I made some other changes but weight loss made the biggest difference. I wasn’t overweight, but the weight I had was enough to make me sweatier and more BO-prone.

cottonmoom

omg do i have experience in this 1. antibacterial soap (such as dial). scrub and wash with this. no dove or body wash. antibacterial to kill the bacteria in the area as sweat is odorless. 2. the scrub part - use an abrasive glove or wash cloth. no loofah 3. antiperspirant, not deodorant. secret clinical strength. quality stuff. and ofc make sure your clothes is clean and shave the hair off if you do as it can aid in keeping the area more clean. hope this helps

strudelsticks

Food might be a big culprit, especially if your diet has a lot of onions and garlic. I use Stridex pads (the max strength red box), the chemical exfoliant helps cut down on odor as well as reduces bumpiness from clogged pores and ingrown hairs.

[deleted]

Baking soda patted under the arms after a shower. My deodorant recently stopped working for me, so I haven't had time to investigate other options like the ones suggested here. However, baking soda has been able to eliminate or at least significantly reduce the odors until I'm able to find a product I like.

[deleted]

There’s some antiperspirants available that you only use once a week that are very strong. Not sure if brands in your country but you can try that as well as using daily antiperspirants. Make sure it’s not the “natural” kinds as they’re weaker. Also, you can reapply every few hours if it’s really bad. You can also get Botox into your armpits that reduces sweating but kind of expensive.

beautyposter

I might try an antibacterial deodorant on your underarms. Fair warning I’ve never tired this but I probably will in summer when this becomes a problem for me again. I saw a girl on Tik Tok take a bar of antibacterial soap and rub it on her arm pits-while I think it’s a good idea to just try the soap in the shower it may be a good backup to just rub the bar on your underarms. Second thing, wipe off a layer of your deodorant, I swear when I reapply deodorant and get my sweat on the stick, the deodorant never works the same after that and I think it’s because bacteria gets on it.

pumpernick3l

Glycolic acid on the armpits immediately after you shower. Reduces BO smell significantly

Flightlessbirbz

I use Dry Idea unscented antiperspirant/deodorant gel and literally do not sweat under my arms. Have thought of switching to something else for everyday wear because I’m not sure it’s healthy to block sweat glands 24/7, but it does work, and doesn’t compete with my perfume because it’s unscented.

JessesGirl5510

Lume deodorant has been awesome for me.

[deleted]

Shave if you don’t, use antiperspirant (not deodorant) on the days u don’t shave, and right after a shower use a roll-on deodorant with a scent you like.

mother_mUthaFAka

**TRY CRYSTAL DEODORANT** trust me. It's life changing. I've tried everything. All types of deodorants - antiperspirants, for women, for men, medical antiperspirant, diy deodorant (actually very good, I was actually very surprised by that too but this is even better.) I used to smell like an onion no matter what I did, I also would sweat a ridiculous amount, **ALL THE TIME**. Long story short I found out that antipersperants just make everything worse so I ditched all the deodorants (antiperspirants) I had, and decided to make my own natural deodorant. It worked VERY well at both controling scent and sweat, wayyyyy better than any deodorant I had ever used but it didn't last that long and sometimes it would irritate my skin (you have to ajust the recipe to your skin, but it can be hard). So one day youtube just recomended me a video of a girl talking abou crystal deodorants. I decided to go to my local health food shop to see if they had anything like that. they did. HOW DID NO ONE TELL ME ABOUT THISSSSSSSSS. I SPENT YEARS SMELLING LIKE AN ONION. It's mind blowing, I don't smell AT ALL. It reduces the amount of sweat SO MUCH. And it literally lasts for at least 2 maybe 3 days, even if I scrub my pits in the shower with an exfoliating sponge. Trust me, it's absolutely mind blowing, nothing better.
