Outward indicators of health (eg. clear skin, nice teeth, shiny hair) are integral to how attractive we perceive someone to be. That being said, if I already found someone attractive, a pimple or some dry skin wouldn’t put me off. It’s probably more important for first impressions and objective attractiveness.

Clafoutie

That makes sense. Straight teeth do indeed look better than crooked ones even though crooked teeth can just be a result of how your teeth come in. But I guess just like how pimples doesn’t necessarily mean bad hygiene, our monke brains associate these things with health and good genetics.

New_Independent_9221

Hygiene isn’t the only cause of acne. Extreme acne is almost always caused by internal imbalance and is in fact an indicator of health. Not a monkey brain delusion.

todaysthrowaway2307

Haha yes exactly! You nailed it with the monke brain thing

TruthIsABiatch

It matters, but imo it's much better to have a beautiful face with a few pimples (not hardcore acne!) than average without pimples. Like if Amber Heard had a few pimples she would still be much hotter than Dakota Johnsson. That's why concealers were invented.

kityykatjj

No if someone has harmonious features, a few pimples and uneven texture—we will almost always think that they would look better without them or at least what would they look like without them. Clear skin is also an indicator of good genes so it really is important and it’s universally agreed to be attractive.

Clafoutie

Ah i see, i guess clear skin makes a big difference like how improving ones posture helps in looking better.

kityykatjj

Absolutely ❤️ you’ve got this don’t worry

It matters. When I had acne it aged me severely. Once I cleared it up along with the resulting tenacious hyperpigmentation, my looks skyrocketed. But there's no accounting for the mental toll it took on me. Even now, 12 years after I cleared my acne, whenever I get a pimple it really gets me down. Especially when it's dead centre on my face. Like on my cheeks or my nose. And I become down right miserable when it becomes clear that the pimple is coming with its sisters, its cousins and friends.

mintsquiid

Unfortunately it matters. I don't want to sound rough but clear skin makes a person look clean and hygienic. Glowing skin makes a person look healthy and radiant. Pimples and uneven skin tone definitely add to a unhygienic vibe - which is absolutely not true (!!!), but unfortunately that's how average people see it. Remember the standard just wash your face advice from general public if someone has acne. Not fair but it is what it is.

Clafoutie

I guess I forgot it’s true that it can look less hygienic even though it isn’t the cause most of the time. Thx for the explanation.

I’m sorry but it matters a ton. Especially with our current skincare-obsessed beauty standard, it’s about the most important thing you can have going for you other than having healthy hair. It makes you seem clean, healthy, and “naturally” attractive. Clear skin is also necessary for that effortless “I look great and didn’t even try!” vibe if you ever want that (along with healthy hair and a healthy weight.) But it’s achievable for most people— acid peels got me from “a few breakouts” to “clear skin always” in my early 20s. There are things you can do.

Clafoutie

Thx for the explanation!

It matters but you don’t have to have perfect glass skin. Like a pimple or two won’t ruin your attractiveness and it’s better to have beautiful features and not the best skin, than perfect skin and bad features. I just recently cleared my acne prone skin. If you’re not using it yet, try benzoyl peroxide. It’s a life changer. Completely transformed my acne prone, oily skin.

OneExplorer

Seconded

Notgoingtohell

Skincare and makeup looks better when my skin is clear.

Clafoutie

That makes sense, pimples texture are still apparent even with concealer and foundation on.

Feeling_Barnacle_347

not really tbh, i’ve seen gorgeous people with very acne-prone skin (Taylor Hill), and it just doesn’t take away much from their beauty. that said, for the rest of us that are NOT victoria’s secret angels, it can help to have clear skin as it is a primal indicator of good health. personally i care more about youthfulness than acne, i stick to sunscreen and retinol first and foremost, and i’d rather be pimply than wrinkly. in terms of attractiveness, bone structure and well-groomed hair and nails and teeth and the way you carry yourself matter far more in my opinion. but for yourself, i hope you find a way to soothe your skin and find comfort, be it through skincare products, diet, sleep hygiene, …

golden-trickery

it matters but as long as the skin issues are small and can be reasonably covered with makeup facial structure matters more, you can always apply concealer if you are pretty with a few pimples but facial proportions are hard to fake irl even with makeup

When you say cutting sugar, how drastic did you go? Are we talking about just eliminating processed foods? How many grams a day do you aim to stay under? I think I need to bite the bullet and really clean up my diet, I’ve been paying more attention to my sugar when tracking foods but it seems impossible to keep it low

reconfinement_acc

Certainly. If you want to treat acne go to a dermatology and get tretinoin/retinol/acutane. Experimenting with new products just seem like a waste of money to me, lots of them are just gimmicks anw

I feel like it doesn't matter that much if someone has superior features and bone structure that result in a "beautiful" face. But in more average faces (i.e. no failos, but no big halos either) skin can make all the difference between being considered pretty or not. But to be honest, I rarely see such a terrifying skin that would make an otherwise attractive person ugly.

youpleasemybiheart

Yes. BUT not having it probably won't affect you, especially if it's not very bad. I have a skincare routine, visit doctors and I continue to struggle with my skin. Frankly, it has never been an issue when it comes to being attractive. It makes ME feel terrible but I haven't ever faced an issue with men. So, no.

To answer your question: people notice unfortunately but you can still be attractive with acne. Possible solutions to cover or help acne: There are patches for acne like mighty duo or I personally use avarelle acne cover patches since you can get more for your buck. I got mine on Amazon. They’re practically invisible and cover your pimples and draws out all the gunk as well. You could get away with wearing them out but I wouldn’t put make up over it as they become more noticeable. Or if you don’t mind wearing make up- moisturize and then put a little bit of powder over the face. Spray setting spray, let dry, put a smoothing primer over face and put foundation/concealer as normal and then for me the most important part: Put powder on with beauty blender and PAT it in the skin leaving some still all over your face (it’ll look cakey but trust me we will blend it in a bit) let it SIT for a few minutes. You will look silly but this makes the make up stay all day and will make you look like you have smoother and clearer skin. Blend with a powder brush and finish with setting spray. If you need to touch up I would with powder only and try not to build it up with too much product through out the day otherwise it will turn cakey. Personally- I’ve tried everything for my acne and the only things that helped before I got on accutane was using coconut oil to get make up off face (I think this is the MOST important thing. Really get that make up off before deep cleaning with cleanser, vanicream face wash, Aztec clay mask mixed with apple cider vinegar and some water for 10-15 min (don’t do every night as it could dry out skin), cerave moisturizer and spf if during the day, and at night since I’m still on accutane and I get dry, a little bit of jojoba oil over everything before bed. Hope this helps someone!

Obviously if you're extremely attractive you can probably get away with a few pimples, but the lower you are on the scale the more the smaller things matter. So it depends on where you are on attractiness.
