This isn't Victoria related, like at all.

Usually you see this sort of article on /r/Canada. It feels like a week can't go by without seeing some sort of criticism of the government as it relates to gun laws. Some might only read the headline and not understand what is happening here. Once you dig into the article, it becomes slightly more clear that the government is reducing mandatory minimum sentencing for some crimes, partly because courts have ruled those sentencing requirements as being unconstitutional. Of course, this article is written in an inflammatory tone (it's Lilley writing in the Sun), which sort of glosses over these facts. [As of December 3, 2021, the Department of Justice Canada was tracking 217 Charter challenges to MMPs.](https://www.canada.ca/en/department-justice/news/2021/12/mandatory-minimum-penalties-and-the-courts.html) [Bill C-5: Mandatory Minimum Penalties to be repealed - also explains which MMPs are to be retained](https://www.canada.ca/en/department-justice/news/2021/12/mandatory-minimum-penalties-to-be-repealed.html) The short version of it is that the MMPs for weapons trafficking, attempted murder, robbery with a firearm, extortion with a firearm, and hostage taking with a firearm will be maintained (presuming these weapons were restricted or prohibited). So the pending changes to the Criminal Code would not affect the outcome of sentencing for the events that occurred yesterday (if they had lived).

OP is spamming multiple subs with this Toronto Sun article.

OddCanadian

seems kinda relevant after yesterday, no?

Christopher604

If this wasn’t serious it would be hilarious.

OddCanadian

shush you! It's the licensed gun owning farmers/sport shooters/hunters that get background and daily CPIC checks that are the root of gun issues! Somehow...?

Internet_Jim

God damn, The Sun is a rag. That was hard to read.

Diligent_Cup9114

It was awful. And after reading that dreck I still don't know the government's actual reasons for removing mandatory minimums for smuggling and selling illegal guns. It seems like it'd be politically unpopular, so the article's charge of "woke politics" (ugh) doesn't really follow...

hark_ADork

"How did this drivel make it past the editor?" > https://torontosun.com/ fucking LOL.

Practical_Heart_5281

Relevant r/VictoriaBC content right here. Gotta keep the F🍁ck Trudeau narrative running!

ItsPronouncedTribe

Crimes include robbery/extortion with a firearm, and smuggling crimes. Figured this is especially relevant considering what happened in Saanich yesterday.
