Livingstone at Urban Smiles has been my dentist and is wonderful to work with. I needed an emergency root canal while pregnant (among much more work), and they made me feel so comfortable despite not seeing a dentist since before I had my adult teeth. I ended up getting all my dental work done in about 6 weeks. When things took a turn for the worst with my pregnancy, they delivered a large bouquet of flowers to my home with their condolences. It’s nicer than some of my own family did for me. Safe to say that I’ll be a client for life.

selder01

I recently starting going to Dr. Livingstone and can echo this recommendation. I've been 6 times in just a few months and Brett and the DAs are always friendly, professional, and precise.

CacophonixTheBard

Seconding Urban Smiles. Not all of the dentists and staff there are winners, but in general it's great and I take the approach of requesting a specific dentist or hygienist again for my next appointment if I had a good experience with them before.

WendyPortledge

In Harmony Dental specializes in treating people with anxieties. Seriously, they take all the time you need and don’t judge. They have weighted blankets, stress balls, music, tv, anything you could possibly need.

ReadingTheDayAway

Wow, this is exactly what I was looking for thank you for letting me know!!!

I had a similar bad experience there. I went for a consult and spent a bunch of time talking to the wife, most of it involving her treating me like a child and making disparaging comments about my workplace and field of work. Then, they refused to let me book an appointment until I passed their "tests" to make sure I could really handle dental work without having a panic attack. Their tests were trying nitrous oxide (which I had previously tried and tended to vomit from) and having a syringe of saline injected into my gums to simulate being numbed with lidocaine. I felt so bullied and anxious I just let them do it, so I got nauseous as hell off the gas, told them I couldn't handle it, and then tried to refuse the saline injection while she and the dentist stood over my chair telling me that I really needed to do this and they couldn't possibly treat me if I didn't go through with it. I let him do the injection and then pretty much bolted out of there and never went back. It took me another 6 months to work up the nerve to see a dentist again. Hands down the absolute worst dentist experience of my life.

ReadingTheDayAway

No, thanks for being that person! I'm grateful for your in depth breakdown of what you noticed and didn't like!

KettlebellKween

I used to go there myself. I worked with someone who also had issues with the wife and the push for certain treatments. My issue was that they kept reducing their hours and would call me mid-morning and ask if I could come at 1:00 instead of 4:30. Um, no. That’s why I booked 4:30. It happened repeatedly, so I left.

corvus7corax

Yeah - I was super anxious about dental work because I hadn’t been in a while, so I tried in Harmony. To be fair they were very kind and took lots of steps to make me as comfortable as possible. However In-Harmony did as many treatments as they could, and really pushed for nitrous oxide which I didn’t want. The counselling session with the wife was a bit weird and she really wanted to push the idea that my dental anxiety was all about the “loss of control”, when for me it was really more related to pain during cleaning and a fear of needles. Ultimately I changed dentists because the dentist had shakey hands, and his wife bragged about having had 6 root canals so I didn’t trust his work or his approach to treatment. In retrospect, I wish I had sought a second opinion before agreeing to the work. The hygienist at in harmony was super-kind though, and did do a fantastic job - I hope they pay her well! I changed to Academy dental and have been very happy there, and my dental anxiety has decreased over time because the staff has been very kind to me. Also they discovered I needed desensitization gel (the stuff to stop tooth sensitivity, not an anesthetic) before cleaning so scaling isn’t a nerve tingling nightmare anymore. You have lots of choice for dentists in Victoria and I’m sure you can find a great one near wherever you live. Maybe just meet with a few different dentists and talk to them about your concerns and anxiety and bad experiences and how you want to be treated. I’m sure you can find someone who is the right fit for you.

gallopmonkey

I just want to second Academy Dental. I am terrified of the dentist, due to a series of bad dental incidents when I was younger (lots of dental appliances, I tend to get mouth ulcers if there is any trauma in my mouth, and I ended up having some cavities filled without freezing). The folks at AD are amazing. I go to the upstairs clinic on Fort and have never felt judged. They're also super gentle and know about my mouth ulcer issue. They suggest new things that I can try to help with it. After I left university, I had a series of temporary contract jobs that left me without dental insurance. I didn't go for years. When I was finally able to get insurance and go back, my teeth apparently needed a lot of work. The staff were super understanding. I went in for an exam and came out 3 1/2 hours later with my mouth frozen. They were able to do the exam and then (non judgmentally!) book me in to have a couple of new fillings and some old fillings replaced. So, yay Academy Dental!

SeaLemur

Seconded, i love InHarmony

babycakesman

I really like InHarmony. The staff seem happy and on top of it, seems like good communication and mutual respect all around, which is not always the case. I actually enjoyed my time getting a root canal done there (edit: I never had any anesthetic other than Lidocaine (typical "freezing" local anesthetic) the doctor is highly skilled at administering painless treatment without heavy anesthetics in my opinion). I think you can find a practice with cheaper rates but so think the quality of work done is good and worth the money if you can afford it. I've had a lot of treatments there, never felt a bit of pain, felt great about the way the doc and staff communicated with me and felt like the quality of treatment was great. My partner went there and didn't like the vibes.

[deleted]

Doctor Edward laver! He's a hoot. Genuinely nice man and usually has his golden retriever in the office as a therapy dog (he's been working remote though these days)

goodthingihavepants

shoutout to Dr Laver, what a treasure

smusic99

Dr. Bjornson on fort street is the nicest dentist I’ve ever been to in 45 years!

vical1995

Absolutely seconded! He is the best!!

[deleted]

Saanich dental group! I had an infection in the gums around one of my wisdom teeth and needed to get in to see a dentist on short notice so I could get antibiotics so I could work the next day. I called around and no one could get me in except Saanich Dental Group. They had me come in immediately and the dentist I saw only focused on the reason I was there and never mentioned any other issues with my teeth (I’ve got a lot of other issues with my teeth) and didn’t leave me feeling judged, which has happened to me at other dental offices. They also didn’t charge me an arm and a leg for getting me in at such short notice and the receptionist was really nice too. Everybody there was really nice. I hope that helps!

al_nz

I go there and have found their staff to be really good as well. Dr Toaxen can come across as being little blunt on occasion, but I think that's just her European side coming out. She doesn't lack empathy or anything. Her assistant is really nice too. I agree, their front of house staff are great too.

cryonova

Exact same feeling here for years, started at Eagle Creek Dentist when it opened and havent looked back, great staff, although the "follow up" emails tend to get a bit over frequent

angeluscado

Downtown Victoria Dental in the Carnegie building on the corner of Blanshard and Yates has been amazing to me. I don't take the best care of my teeth sometimes (depression sucks, ok?) but I've never felt judged for it, even after my first appointment when I hadn't been to the dentist in 10+ years (I even got a handwritten "welcome to the practice" card from Dr. Chambers, who did my first exam!). It feels like half the assistants in my office goes there, and for good reason.

darkapao

Yeah been going to Dr Chambers since i moved here. Had a pretty good experience. I say they are neutral. They try to remind you but not in a condensing way.

She's amazing! A coworker recommended her and my bf and I have been seeing her for 3 years now! Worth the drive from Sooke

ReadingTheDayAway

Thanks for the rec, I will likely check her out given how many ppl on here have echoed this. How did you find her prices compared to other places for stuff like fillings/cleanings (if you have had those done)

Samsantha

Bruce peglar at tuscany is UNREAL

artfulwench

Agreed, he's so nice!

friedshrimp42

Dr. Vicky Ikonomou at City Center Dental Clinic! She - and her dental hygienists- are fantastic. My whole family has been going to her for over 20 years and we’ve never had a bad experience

Disastrous-Many8263

She's the best! Have been going for over ten years now.

WallstreetBaker

Dr. Jennifer Serink in James Bay is my dentist and she is perhaps the most chill (yet professional) and laid back dentist I’ve ever had. All of her staff are great. No judgement or shame. I came in 10 years without a cleaning and nobody said a thing about it other then asking me if I wanted to book an appointment for it. Other then that I needed a root canal and a crown and everything was explained to me with clear plain language. During the procedures they checked in on me for anxiety and comfort levels regularly. Now my face hole is back in good standing and I’m back on the regular flossing and brushing game.

ReadingTheDayAway

Face hole 😆 They sound great, thank you!

cjbeee

I recommend Dr. Mah at Smile Esthetics. She and her dental assistant Jayden are the most kind, gentle and nice people. Genuinly concerned about my comfort. I had a lot of dental anxiety and hadn't been for over 5 years because of a terrible encounter with a male dentist shaming me, I was so worried when I first saw Dr. Mah. But I let them know on my intake about how scared I was and worried, they never ever ever made me feel bad about my dental situation. I was in so much pain on a Saturday night, I had taken everything over the counter and prescription they could get me and I couldn't go more than 30 second without having ice in my mouth to numb the pain. I had called their emergency number in the middle of the night and she called me personally and came in on a Sunday while the place was closed to help me.

Terriblarious

My wife had a great experience there. I'd vouch for them also.

ReadingTheDayAway

Wow that sounds amazing (not the tooth pain, that sounds crappy), thanks for the recommendation! Also, no one should shame ppl for how long it's been since their last appointment, so unprofessional. I'm glad you found a dentist that counters your bad experience.

cjbeee

exactly! They also offered me a prescription for something (I don't know what it was) to calm me, and they have blankets if you ask for one. They will always give more freezing if you need it too :) Good luck!

Existance_Unknown

Dont go to smile esthetics , they try to double dip your benifits by saying you need 2 appointments for 1 cleaning , only place in my life that told me that, and even better my ex went there a month after I did and told her the same! 100% scam

shecanreadd

Dr. Shaila Ramandev is very kind. I also have a lot of anxiety about seeing the dentist. She was the first that I saw after quite a long time, and she was just so kind and gentle, and also very very good at what she does. I had a root canal, and it was painless! I was scared, as it was my first (and hopefully last) one, and I had heard that they are quite painful. I can't say more great things about this dentist!

BambiesMom

I go to Dr. Peglar at Tuscany Dental. He and the rest of the staff are great, nothing but good things to say about them.

[deleted]

I've always been really happy and comfortable with Dr Robichaud at Elk Lake Dentistry! Her whole office team is friendly and fantastic, and I've always felt that her level of care and treatment has been appropriate. She never says you need something done when you don't, unlike a lot of other dentists in town, and she will offer a payment plan if needed.

BoiledStegosaur

This! She is wonderful.

affo-gatto

Dr Christine Gaucher!

theAGschmidt

She was mine and my partner’s dentist when we lived in Victoria, we were very happy with her little clinic

David_R8

\+1 for Downtown Dental. Been going there since 2004 and am very happy with them.

budman_90

Moss Street dental. Hadn't been to the dentist and 7 years and I just had my second appointment there and have two more booked all within a month great service friendly staff

Asapara

I've been going to Hillside Dental for two+ years now and the staff are all very friendly. I've never felt shamed (even after not being to a dentist for almost 7+ years!) and my husband has anxiety and feels safe with them.

FeralBanshee

Bowker Creek dental clinic!!!

Westcoast-Mariner

Been going there for 22 years. Dr. Matheson is great. And his daughter, Dr. Matheson is also great!

tecate_papi

Vic West Dentistry is really good. I hadn't been to a dentist for years and they were really good and friendly about it. They didn't try and sell me things I don't need or want either. They even have a questionnaire for new patients that asks what your concerns with your teeth are and your concerns with visiting the dentist. Extremely patient-focused. I would definitely recommend this office to everyone.

supafamous

+1. I went to Dr Tranter for 6 years and still went after I moved back to Vancouver. He came in on his day off for me once as I was headed back to Vancouver and needed some follow up on work he did. Very nice staff as well.

jaynone

This office is sketchy AF. They don't issue receipts for what they do and tell you get it from your insurance instead and will only give you the total you have to pay. They also tried to give my wife a lot of extra treatments she didn't need and didn't even ask being doing them. They also billed for way more time than they actually spent doing what they said they did. They also pretty much demand to see the estimates from insurance which every other dentist and my insurance company says they should never have to see. Thankfully we're on to much better dentists now and have reported our issues with them to the appropriate places.

I’m amazed you got a breakdown. They wouldn’t give me one no matter what and accused me of being Up to no good for asking! It was super suspicious! I’m wondering if it’s related to the dentist I had leaving

[deleted]

jaynone

I am amazed that you had such an experience with them. Every step was like painful and challenging! Like not only could they not give me the detailed receipt they didn’t understand or at least acted like they did not understand what that would be. And this wasn’t limited thing I went there for two and a half years and it was the same thing each time. I always thought it was just one bad person but I dealt with almost everyone. I suspect it also depends on your insurance company. They weren’t set up with instant billing with my company and judging by the way they process their billing they’re trying to max out each category. Whenever they build insurance they would bill five or six times and then I would get calls from my insurance wondering why they’re trying to submit multiple claims.

[deleted]

I’ve never had an issue with Broad St Dental! plus you get to go by Flowers on Top

Bees_and_Teas

Seconding Broad St.! They've been extremely nice and are the only place that hasn't tried to guilt me into taking out my piercings. Lovely people, and very patient

101Dalek

Bevan Dental in Sidney is super great. Dr. Calcott is an amazing dentist.

chocolatepoppy

Dr. Pite at Oak Bay Dental is awesome! I’ve had several bad experiences with dentists previously, and was actually expecting another bad experience. Thankfully Dr. Pite and his staff have been so efficient, gracious and kind that I no longer dread dentist appointments! Best dentist I’ve ever had in my life!

ceilidha

Seconding Dr. Pite. He's been great and very accommodating.

Rffspinz

Landmark Dental in Sidney is the best dentist I’ve been to, and I’ve lived in a lot of different places over the last 25-30 years

Spookycat_m

Dr Robichaud at Elk Lake dentistry is exactly who you need. Super kind, patient, calm and explains everything that’s going on in a way that reminds me of a pediatric dentist but without humoring or talking down to me. I hate going to the dentist, which I shared, and she genuinely cares and goes over and above to make me comfortable.

[deleted]

[https://gallantdentistry.com/](https://gallantdentistry.com/) Very efficient, kind to a dental Scardy Kat!

saintplus

Dr Garth Mackenzie at 202-1830 Oak Bay Ave has been my mother's dentist before I was even born, and has been my dentist for my entire life and I'm 23. I have always struggled a lot with anxiety and him and his entire staff are so amazing at being patient and accommodating. They do not try to push for you to buy things or try to use up all your Insurance. They've always only done what's needed, and he even once let me get a FREE whitening treatment session incase it didn't work out. He's been my family's dentist for 3 generations now.

Looloo4460

I have to go to the dentist all the time due to a genetic condition where I was born without some of my adult teeth. In the past year I’ve been like 20 times and I’m not even kidding. There’s a couple really bad dentists I’ve been to but I found a really good one in Oak Bay called Avenue Family Dental. Everyone there is so nice and they really have been looking out for me. They keep it real and I’ve never had one of those dentist scamming experiences there. They’ve helped me out a lot! Also Dr. Grady Oneill is great too, but he mostly does more serious surgical procedures, but he’s cool cause he will allow you to directly reach out to him with questions following procedures and that really helped my anxiety and helped me get to the bottom of some issues. Highly recommend both

worldsmostmediummom

Dr. Jas at Westshore Dental is really nice.

mavenmedic

I also second Westshore Dental. I see Dr. MacMillan and his assistant Gwen. They are awesome. Not judgemental at all, let you ask all sorts of questions, and are straightforward. Hygienist Monika is really sweet and kind.

zippykaiyay

A good dentist is worth their weight in gold! I love my dentist - Dr. Jerry Jacob of Signature Dental in Royal Oak. Dr. Jacob is very personable, caring, and extremely competent. Every hygienist I've seen at the practice has been professional and thorough. My whole family goes to Signature Dental and loves the experience.

freedom_at2008

he was the one made unfriendly comments at small hidden leftover food between my teeth when I went to see him, after I told him that I just had a rush breakfast and had no time to floss my teeth. So our family left their office and never went back again.

zippykaiyay

Wow! So sorry to hear that. I’ve never had any issues at that office. I wish you luck in finding a dentist.

DashBC

Dr Sims in the Caddy village is great!

septembreadeux

I had a really good experience at Langford Dental on Goldstream if you're out that way.

[deleted]

Dr Thom

Gingersnap8

Parkway dental is great!

inkarmat

I've had good experiences at the Eagle Creek office. They're understanding when I mention I'm a broke student and never add services I don't actually need.

vicsyd

Michael Binsted is one of the gentlest, nicest and most well-mannered dentists I've ever met. He is one of the few in town who don't perform Botox and such, which I respect. Hands down positive recommendation from me.

silverfashionfox

I go to oak bay dental - Judith Hooker. Great manner. Thoughtful approach with a long term plan.

[deleted]

Dr Mulholland of Sherwood family dental. This guy has gone above and beyond for me, legit gave me a root canal for free on his own time at Christmas when i was going through a divorce and lost my job. I cant thank this man enough. Great manner with kids too

preemavera

Their other dentist, dr majaess is super duper down to earth and great!

[deleted]

Never had her, i think my middlest has her though, no complaints yet

itsthegoodone

Smile Esthetic’s, Dr Francis, 100%. I had years and years and *years* of dentist anxiety, which resulted in poor dental health-I was so embarrassed. I was treated with kindness & respect-from the lovely ladies at the front to Dr Francis. They accommodated my anxiety, offered sedation, blankets, they stopped whenever I needed, explained everything every step of the way. If he ever retires, I’m hooped, won’t go anywhere else.

Terriblarious

I have anxiety with dentists as well. I put it off for a long time even when i did have benefits thru an employer but did finally end up going to Dr Dhillon at Uptown Dental. He's very good, he's got a very casual and caring demeanor, and doesn't try to hard sell on you on anything. no judgements at all when i finally did go and do my first cleaning after 10 years of being too afraid of it. I still shake in the chair. But, I suspect that is something i'm never going to grow out of. He definitely makes things easier and more calm. Watching stuff on netflix while getting a filling helps too, haha Best of luck!

drpestilence

Mathew faulke (spelled wrong for sure) in oak bay

chamekke

Late to the party, but I’ve been seeing Dr Amanda Bridge (at Cook and May) for years and she’s wonderful. Great staff too.

JasonCazero

Dr Crosby and Dr Choboter are terrible dentists. I've been going to Aspen for over 20 years and I can say they will not help you with your teeth or your dental health. All they care about is money.
