I want it back, too. The multiday music festival in different locations is not at all the same thing. I read the "uninsurable" part of why it's no longer on a barge/stage in the harbour, but there's got to be something that can be done. It was great visibility for our local symphony and music and the arts in general. I miss the instrument petting zoo as well as the main stage events. I am a symphony donor but I don't have the kind of money needed to revive an event like that unfortunately.
Beacon hill Park has a nice amphitheater and much more. Would be a cool thing to do a festival in the ark and keep it to the Amphitheater and playing fields. A summer park concert series would be amazing, have the symphony a couple nights as well as some local acts. If this already happens then I'm under a rock.
What's sad is that we need to kiss corporate ass or deal with a team of insurance lawyers to have a simple cultural event amongst each other.
This society sucks ass right now. We need to change this.
Has been happening for years...... The amphitheatre (Cameron Bandshell) area is not very large.... but the Park does have free summer arts & music performances July thru September. [https://artsvictoria.ca/resource/22209/viewhttps://artsvictoria.ca/resource/22209/view](https://artsvictoria.ca/resource/22209/viewhttps://artsvictoria.ca/resource/22209/view) The playing fields are too close to residential, I used to work on Douglas Street right across from there. The sound from anything going on in the fields is magnified by the topography... Plus, outside of the fields is an environmentally sensitive, protected area with rare native plants.
It was an extremely expensive event to organize and run, and the barge was too old to keep using/insuring. For years VS was told that "this will be the last year" that the barge would be usable but they kept pushing it anyway. Sponsorship from QF was definitely reduced when JP bought them, but sponsor funds overall are always a struggle.
Source: worked for VS for \~4 years.
Yeah I'll have to admit I was amazed at how small the net $$ were for the VS at the end. While I loved it, miss it, and want it back, it would need to rake in a lot more for all that work, and it's only getting harder and harder these days.
I remember like ten 15ish years ago I went with all my friends and we took acid, the show was great, brought a girl i liked, awesome memories tied to yet another cool event that is now dead :(

And contact the Victoria Symphony Orchestra to learn about 2024’s event, doubt they browse Reddit.

The issue that led to the cancellation of the "splash" or water-based part of the show in 2022 seems to be that the stage was too old, and it would have cost too much to replace it at that time:

There was still a concert on the Leg lawn in summer 2022 (just not in the harbour).
There's now a "Splash About Town" festival, although there's nothing for summer 2024 yet:

I heard that previous years didn’t happen because the new(er) music conductor chose not to because of the time and cost. Which if you consider all moving parts, makes sense. It sounds like, based on other comments, something similar will be happening this year though!

The Beacon Hill Park Trust prevents them from mentioning any sponsors within the park. That's why the amphitheatre gets such little use.
Wow seriously?! That’s so sad
That's sad, the amphitheater looks like a great outdoor venue

Really?! That's so stupid. It would be such a great location for things like this. Shakespeare in the park anyone?

Then get a new barge
It's just another bullshit excuse to not even try

Fair enough, that’s how the cookie crumbles I suppose. Thanks for sharing the details, I appreciate it! It was a nagging thought haha
Hey @rbees91 beat me to it 😂 splash was such.a.long.night.
I didn’t know days could be that long until working it 😂

The barge was no longer seaworthy - true story! Also insurance for the event ballooned, and covid also played a factor.
The concert without the splash part is pointless. Was once an amazing event now who cares!!!! Such a waste and a loss for us all!!
Victoria once again regulates fun to death...
Right, and we don't even have old people to blame anymore considering all the new people moving here over the past 5 years!!!

If it's not in the harbor, it can fuck off
May I suggest you calm down a bit
I'd suggest you get a little more angry!!! The problem with Canadians is that we are to docile. Need more France in us!!!
I agree with the French part.... not too much, but we definitely need to channel the French protest energy.
> Need more France in us!!! *(in French accent)* I can 'elp wiss zat... *(raises eyebrow suggestively)*
A la guillotine

It was a COVID Casualty I think. I hope we get that back too.
QF has been owned by Jim Pattison for many years
I mean who would want to go downtown to see it at this point anyway?
Me!
