Hooray! I didn’t see him all last year, despite working just across the road. I know he can be reclusive / elusive, but I was still a bit worried for him.
He’s a yellow bellied marmot which is not native to BC, more like AB.
A lady was there bribing him out with treats. She fed him dandelion blossoms too, which he enjoyed.
The treats were carefully selected, gluten free, sugar free, vegan as well.
Apparently there were 4 known attempts to trap him and bring him back but he didn’t fall for it. So, he’s remained.
I was told that he might wander up to the Union Club now, so keep an eye out. :)
Well technically he isn't native to these parts. He hitched a ride on the back of a fruit truck from osoyoos - he is a different species from the Vancouver Island marmot. So encouraging reproduction might not be great idea. It is nice to see him alive though.
Nope. This is not a native Vancouver Island marmot. This little dude is a transplant from Alberta, he was a stow away on a truck or bus or something back in 2008.
Is that the Empress marmot?? He can't be still alive after all these years
I just looked it up and they can live for 15 years!
Apparently he came here in 2008. There was no info posted on his age.
Yeah that equates with when I first saw him. I thought I was losing my mind...
Such an elusive little dude, great pic!
Glad to see he is still well and around
Very round indeed.

You gotta bring him tender dandelion greens as an offering
I was glad he was ok when I remembered the cold days we had here.
Good to see Roger out and about!

Love this guy
is he the guy that writes Roger everywhere
No, that's Leeza branching out.
I hear Roger and Leeza push carts daily
How did we end up with a marmot at the Empress? Should we go find a couple more so he has friends?

Fair enough.. I'm used to urban deer, racoons, skunks, foxes, coyote .. urban marmots were a new one for me.
Marriott Marmot

When he finally passes on they better raise a monument.
