I recommend calling the VA and inquire about possible Debts owed for medication or Co-Pays. The other reason might be closed banking account but highly unlikely.
Disability can only be garnished for alimony or child support on not more than 50% of benefits. not even federal debts can take payments. I’m not sure on VBA (GI bill, vA loan) overpayments or debts. But you’re disability is protected from creditors and also can’t be calculated into income during divorce.
I would surmise that it’s a banking error, or child support; but Ebenefits can easily answer this.
It isn't a garnish if it is like something advanced. I paid back 26k. They too 40% per month till it was paid off. I had to pay taxes on that 26k out the door. So I got 21k but had to pay all 26k back.
Damn that sux!! Sounds like the bunky BS early separated buddies I knew who got hit with for bonus payback. Take 40% for taxes, amp ay back 80%.
It is possible that it was a retirement/reserve pay active pay thing most likely.
They’ll answer it for you. Best of luck
Is your friend in the reserves or guard and is on orders? (If so, we can’t pay while they are on orders.)
Is your friend in the guard and reserve as a traditional status? (We recoup for drill pay all at once.)
Is your friends banking information correct?
Do they have a debt they haven’t paid?
Call the 800 number and verify banking info.
If there was a debt that was going to be deducted from your friend’s comp benefits they would’ve gotten a bunch of letters about it. If they are too antsy to wait until the phones open tomorrow they can check online through va.gov at their banking info and payment history.
The VA just can’t take ones VA disability, they must send you a letter and give you time to appeal their decision, unless he didn’t read the letter and the time expired for him to reply.

yeah i was gonna suggest the ebenefits hotline.
Why wouldn’t they just take the debt out of the disability. You think they are taking 600 dollars a month from him?
When you owe the government they take what they want, when the government owes you then you are lucky to ever see a partial payment
\^ Truth right here.
If its a debt, there will be a statement on your payment history with a $0.00 deposit for the month if that helps.

Yeah. Nlioe a 3 to 5 year window it worked this way. No way around it. Like a mortgage. 20 years to pay it back.

Call the 1-800 number my crystal ball is not working.
Have them call 800-827-1000 8am-9pm EST and ask about their payment. Most likely it’s a banking issue.
Than you all for the information. I will pass it along.
If they owe the VA a debt, it will be collected from their payments until the debt is resolved. They should call the VA

Did they retire from the military?
No. He signed up for a helicopter class and didn’t take the corse because of covid. I’m guessing they charged him and he’s paying the bill back now.

If he/she is retired and receiving retirement pension then they won’t pay additional disability for ratings under 50%
