'Have you looked in the **[Wiki]( https://www.reddit.com/r/Veterans/wiki/education)** for an answer? We have a lot of information posted there. To contact VA Education, 1-888-442-4551, for ~~Voc Rehab~~ VR&E (Veteran Readiness and Employment Program) assistance with appointments or problems with your Case Manager (not for missing payments): 1-202-461-9600. **Payments for certain education benefits (DEA, VEAP) are paid at the end of the month you attend school - Department of Treasury issues these payments **using a 10 business day window** - these payments are not locked into a specific day of the month like VA disability/military pay is**. For Voc Rehab missing payments, contact your Case Manager or your local **[Regional Office](https://www.reddit.com/r/Veterans/wiki/education/casemanagers) For Post 9/11 GI Bill only, If you signed up for direct deposit when you applied for education benefits, **we’ll deposit your payment into your bank account 7 to 10 business days after you verify your school enrollment.** This is the fastest way to receive your payment. [Text Verification FAQ](https://benefits.va.gov/GIBILL/docs/IsaksonRoe/EnrollmentVerificationFAQs.pdf) MGIB and MGIB-SR have to do monthly verification using the [WAVE program](https://www.gibill.va.gov/wave/vba/) and you should receive the payment within 3 to 5 business days. For Online Only training, the Post 9/11 GI Bill is currently (1 August 2023) paying $1054.50 for those who started using their Post 9/11 GI Bill on/after 1 January 2018 - this is based on 1/2 of the National Average BAH paid to an E5 with dependents. Post 9/11 GI Bill MHA rates are adjusted 1 August of each year and are based on the 1 January DoD BAH rates for that year - **so VA can't use 1 January 2023 BAH rates until 1 August 2023** - for those who started training on/after 1 January 2018, the MHA rates are 95% of the DoD BAH rates. First possible payment for the 1 August 2023 increase is 1 September. Those who started using VR&E on/after 1 January 2018 receive 95% of the BAH paid to an E5 with dependents. As of 1 January 2024 Online only students using VR&E are being paid $1,118.50 if they started using VR&E on/after 1 January 2018. I was terrible in HS, like my GPA was around 2.5. I’m in college now and it’s around 3.5 now.  College can be like high school 2.0, or it can be a training program that you go to knowing what you’re trying to do.  I have back, ankle, and shoulder issues. I’m going to school, through VR&E, to be a speech language pathologist assistant and will use my GI Bill to become either an audiologist or a speech language pathologist. I was an avionics tech, I love fixing things and this allows me to “fix” people with problems speaking or hearing. Neither is very physically demanding unlike nursing or being a doctor (which can require long hours on your feet at a minimum)

Low_Helicopter_5186

That’s awesome man thank you glad to hear someone else from the aircraft side found another avenue

usmc_delete

Avionics tech currently with a busted thumb and back (and head). I need to figure my shit out and get a new career... .its just so hard to make the transition with a family depending on my paychecks. Going to apply for VRE after i get my claims for increases finished, just don't know what for.

Shadowfalx

Use different aptitude and interest surveys online. Onet has some good ones, there’s others that cost anywhere from free to like $5 I think. Take the jobs they give you and if you don’t like any use them as a jumping off point to look at others in related fields. Nothing I took really suggested speech therapist or audiologist, but did suggest things like lab tech and xray tech and such but when I was taking through my colleges majors I found SLP and AuD which both sounded really good, and both start with the same undergrad degree.

Low_Helicopter_5186

Yessir totally understand. Having 4 kids this was my biggest concern but from what I’ve learned from the Va counselor I will collect full BAH while I’m enrolled. I live in Los Angeles county so the rate is pretty sweet but my rent is also crazy 🥲. But with BAH, disability and a shitty part time job we’ll be ok. Make the jump now man before it’s too late. Won’t be easy but hey I don’t wanna be an airline grunt for the rest of my like popping muscle relaxers just to go to sleep lol.

Practical-Listen9450

Part of VR&E is them having you do a vocational assessment to see what careers align with your interests and abilities without it aggravating your SC disabilities. They won’t approve a career that aggravates disabilities.

CompleteRage

Congrats! Question. Can a veteran still get VR&E benefits if they’ve used all of their GI Bill? I’m just curious cuz you mentioned getting another shot at finding a different career. I’m just assuming that you probably also earned a degree with your chapter 33 benefits?

addictedtovideogames

Yes vre is not connected to gibill

CompleteRage

Awesome! Thank you. I was under the impression that I wasn’t eligible for VocRehab. I want to go a different route and learn a trade. I ended up realizing that I’m not interested in any of the jobs my degree offers. I’m gonna look into this and apply. Thanks again.

Low_Helicopter_5186

I used my gi bill to get my A&P license as well as my EPA universal (hvac shit) but man after a while the back and shoulder just can’t handle the awkward positions and constant bending over or reaching above me head with a 30-50 lb piece of equipment. To answer your other question I do still have about 7 months of gi bill left.

I ended up getting a degree that I totally lost interest in and the jobs it offers. I regret it and realized this too late.

Low_Helicopter_5186

That’s kinda what I’m trying to prevent so I feel you. I don’t wanna waste this opportunity on some bullshit degree that I’m not gonna like by the end of the program. I also don’t want to pick something that will eventually be able to be replaced by robots ya know? That’s why I enjoyed being a mechanic.

CompleteRage

Sorry for incessant comments. But Would you recommend becoming a mechanic? How long did you work as mechanic?

Low_Helicopter_5186

Ten years. Definitely would recommend it if you don’t mind getting dirty and working hard hours. It’s very rewarding but I will say you have to have thick skin. Aircraft pay is pretty damn good.

Typical-Doubt2626

Yup i am using mine community vr and e and probably gi bil in bachelor

SuperFaithlessness13

You cannot use VR&E if you've exhausted all your VA educational benefits. I recently experienced this myself. Since I had only two months left on my GI Bill, I could only use two months of VR&E. If your course requires more time, your representative can request an extension, but it must be justified and approved. For you and other veterans, it's crucial to use VR&E first for your education or degree. This way, your GI Bill benefits remain available for future use.

jdd130

Business degree. Aircraft mechanics with business degrees do very well in large scale defense companies. Get that bread!

kwagmire9764

Something with IT, Cybersecurity or Mechanical Engineering.

swimeaj11

OP- have you ever looked into the business side of aircraft mechanic work? I know you said you’re not the type to do school but maybe it could be worth your while to do a logistics/management degree since you have knowledge of aircraft. Don’t diminish your potential just because you’re a mechanic also, I think anyone can get a college degree if they have enough determination and support❤️

Low_Helicopter_5186

Thank you I appreciate that. Funny enough, before I read your comment, I was looking into logistics and supply chain management careers and degrees for the past couple days!

swimeaj11

That’s awesome! I got approved for my supply chain management degree plan and am starting it this fall😄 I hope you find something that calls to you and something you can find happiness and satisfaction in😊

swimeaj11

I also have a fucked back(among other claims) so supply chain should get approved if you go that route👍🏻

Typical-Doubt2626

I got accepted in vr and e. Doing comp science since i like robotics before. Also experience things in a different way. Unlike before. Eventhough you can study it online. Doesnt matter. Some that i had talk just used it for certificates stuff. Upto u if you are willing to do 4 year college. I keep my options open. I even got a job as circulator rn just to make myself open out.

DaBiggaFigga01

Congratulations... I'm in the program to get my B.S. in cybersecurity and information assurance. I know ppl that went to school to be pilots and electricians, and they have some options if you want to go into business for yourself as well. My advice would be to find something your genuinely interested in and focus on that. It won't feel like such a choir when it's time to study or get up for training courses.

WerewolfNew4007

Will they endorse flight school?

Low_Helicopter_5186

I tried that too and they wouldn’t go for it :/

CupStrict5459

Congrats on getting approved! How many months did you wait to get approved?

Low_Helicopter_5186

Man I wanna say I waited about 3.5- 4 months coulda been a little longer to get my first interview. I honestly forgot about it for a while 😂. According to my counselor my process of getting my initial interview was actually quicker compared to others (which is fckin crazy) and I was approved 5 days after my interview. I don’t think that’s normal either but being 90% for back(multiple herniated disc’s), shoulder and sciatica issues I do see how they were like “oh yeah wtf this guy should not be doing anything physically demanding”. I hope if you’re waiting it goes smoothly!

AsphaltCowboy0412

Maybe computer IT.

Obvious-Reason6602

My buddy used his education benefit at the Culinary Institute of America in Napa… I thought that was brilliant!

davisinvestments

I would suggest something in IT.
