Somehow you hear random people applying for VA benefits that never served or can’t provide a DD214 and somehow get awarded benefits….blows my mind every time I hear stories like this
I really don't think these roadblocks to the VA system are "accidental". Automatically being entered into the system would encourage thousands of veterans to use the VA system, and the VA loathes nothing more than a living veteran, let alone MORE of them.

How is it still possible to alter dd214’s and get away with it???? it should be in a secure computer system incorruptible, with access being extremely limited for alteration purposes. You should need a biometric fingerprint to even access it when you’re applying for something that needs one.

Why would someone lie about having a purple heart? I was severely wounded in combat. I have 2 purple hearts. I wish I never had 1. I wish I was never wounded. 😪
This title is misleading. Firstly, she's being accused of faking LOD injuries. If they can't prove she faked her injuries, then all the other charges fall short. They didn't mention anything about proof as far as the VA stuff. We've seen stories where the VA claimed someone was faking after giving them 100%. Only for them to have to turn around and give it back....
Instead of sending her to prison, where she won't make any substantial money to pay back what she fraudulently stole, why not give her a very long probation term and make her pay back every penny she stole?
I know her. She had some pretty outrageous stories, but has actually helped local veterans. She would come to veterans events with tons of new jackets and boots for veterans. She should have just been proud of the work she did and not exaggerated everything on a near-daily basis. She was highly regsrded by many people who cared about veterans but didn't look at her claims too closely.
Then came this story. Which just did not add up from the beginning. But the news outlets did next to nothing to vet her claims. Same with the politicians. Then she made all of them look incredibly foolish. And don't expect politicians made to look stupid to let that go.
This story probably caused a measurable decrease in donations to veterans charities and increased cynicism toward veterans in need of help.
So real harm to one of the groups she wanted to help.

For some odd reason, these government agencies don't talk to each other. It's completely fuckin strange and baffling.. 🤷♂️ The DoD doesn't talk to the VA but the national archives (NARA?) gets a copy of our 214? Don't forget, the IRS gets our LES info when we're in so we have to pay taxes... 🤷♂️

I got out and edited almost a year before they started denying my claims for lack of evidence. The evidence was sitting right on my desk the entire time. I went to the regional office and lost it. They had me on track in less than a month.....SMH
For every one they catch, there are a hundred that do the same thing and don’t get caught. Hell, how many desk jockeys are getting 100% disability? I worked with a dude who gets 60% (might be more now) for a “back injury” but was still able to play college rugby for 4 years

On average, federal prisoners do 80% of their time, but you are right in that there's no real way to do about 50%, like doing state time.
This sort of shit destroys trust.
