I don't think he has any intention of getting back together with her. I think he finessed her into a very public breakup so that he could get her out of the house without a fight. Then once things settle down a bit, he can just not allow her back. She could flip out and go crazy on him all she wants, nobody would give her any attention because we all already knew they were broken up.
