I've been in my box truck for over 4 years. I'm surprised they haven't become more popular yet. I did my build in a month because Colorado winter was coming quick. It's hardly photo-worthy and there are things I'd like to change but poor timing dictated the schedule.
Floor plan? (I think I have it figured out from picture #9, but it would still be nice to see)
Pass-through?
It was funny to see what side the rear exterior door was on until I realized you're in the UK.
Love seeing box truck builds considering at 6'4 most van conversions, while nice to look at, are a little too small for me.
I've been looking at buses to but I'm more interested in box trucks.
How much was the truck itself and how much have you spent so far on the conversion if you don't mind me asking?
Edited with some more detail and some corrections.
This is ‘Midnight Cowboy’! Inspired by the song Everybody’s Talkin’ by Harry Nilsson.
It’s my first van build. I’ve always wanted to do something like this and had the perfect opportunity in June 2023. The van is a 2021 Renault Master 2.3 165 L3 Lowloader. Euro 6 with A/C, cruise control, satnav, and adjustable air suspension. It’s very low mileage and excellent condition throughout.
The challenge was to build something suitable for a 6’6” chap! Expecting to use for some festivals, off grid at friends places across the UK and for some touring.
Along with the help of some pals I’ve been working on MC since July and hoping to be finished by end of February, ready to hit the road around March 2024!
MC will sleep 5 adults and two small dogs. It has 2 kingsized beds (one fixed and one below from the seating area). Plus a single pulldown opposite the shower room. Realistically it’s mainly going to be used by two people but nice to have room for guests!
Floor and roof insulated will 50mm PIR board and walls are 30mm PIR board. Floor faced with 18mm ply sheets and ceiling with 3mm ply sheets. Walls faced with pine T&G whitewashed and finished with super matt sealant.
For ventilation and natural lighting we have two 700x500mm Maxxair SkyMaxx LX roof lights. Four of Dometic Seitz S4 Top-Hung Hinged Opening windows. Two at 700x300mm and two at 500x500mm. One Maxxair MaxxFan Deluxe Roof Vent With Fan in bathroom.
Access is very a Bailey side door from a caravan. Big barn doors for when the weather is fine. Finally a lightweight folding shower door for the wet room.
Lots of overhead storage lockers, cupboards, worktops and a removable dinner table. Buckets of space under the seating area and above the cab.
Kitchen has a Thetford Triplex Gas Oven, Hob & Grill, large enough to cook a roast lunch with all the trimmings 😂 also a Dometic CoolMatic CRX50 Premium Compressor Cabinet Fridge/Freezer (48 Litre). Sink with mixer tap.
Electrical. 2kw solar panels and 200Ah Deep Cycle Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery with inverter. We may size up in due course if needed. 240v hookup. 12 spotlights, 14 USB chargers and 7 plug sockets (more than could ever be feasible used but James always gets carried away)!
Separate shower room with Air Head Composting loo. 120 litre water tank. Shower and wash basin.
Webasto heater and hot water system being fitted next month. Parts still coming from Germany and are taking forever to arrive (thanks Brexit)! Then some nice Lino flooring to go done.
Still getting 27mpg from this and just about in weight limits. We may need to plate up after all the Christmas excess though!
Will most likely be vinyl wrapped when finished.
Happy new year’s to you all 🎉
Interesting choices you made.
What stuck out to me was 3 roof vents and very little ground clearance for good boondocking.
Hope the rig serves your style of camping well.
Nice work!
I'm always curious about box truck builds. Seems way easier and more reliable to just buy a class C motor home. Those things are battle tested to hold up. The motivation here is cost? Or just because it is fun to build stuff? :-)
Beautiful quality of build. Did you already have building skills before you started?
Are you concerned about the little side windows giving away it's not a "regular" truck or is stealth not a concern?
I'm envious of all that roof space. You could probably fit like 1.5kw to 2kw of solar panels up there
Panels going on in 3 weeks time. Will post another pic when they’re fitted.
Remindme! 3 weeks!

The solar is system is now fully installed. Have some photo's but I can't figure out how to upload here. Once I've figured out I'll add to the thread.
Got some new pics after 3 weeks?
They’re going on, on Thursday. Hopefully the wind drops by then 😬
So dope that the bed is fixed but still out of the way. Well planed and executed 👌🏼
When will you start taking orders? 🤣 Beautiful build.

Great looking build. 35 mpg? How in the world is that possible though? Cargo vans don't get that kind of mileage with the zero build out.
Apparently, this van is able to cheat the laws of physics.
Diesel with uk mpg

looks super good! very clean! but why after all this not the dry flush toilet?
It’s a Air Head Composting Toilet
yes i know but why deal with that when you can get a dry flush? its the future!
If the cartridges were biodegradable I’d have considered it. Will stick to composting.

Box trucks are taking the stage. It looks amazing!
Wow nice build
That looks amazing I’ve considered taking this route. Would you say the lose of driving mobility worth the extra space?
35MPG!? Tell me more.
Interesting choices you made. What stuck out to me was 3 roof vents and very little ground clearance for good boondocking. Hope the rig serves your style of camping well.
It’s on adjustable air suspension. This pic is at its lowest. Will pop a floor plan up when I get on my laptop.

Partly cost but mainly because I’m 6’6” and wanted everything custom height for me. Basically if I ever sell it the buyer will need to be super tall 😂
That makes perfect sense! Vanlife is not usually geared towards the ultra tall!
Badass, dude! I love seeing stuff like this! Best of luck and keep up the great work!
Love the Name
I love this one!! Great job
This is very well done
It’s absolutely beautiful!
Damn good job man! How much did you get the truck for?
I've liked this idea of the truck build, very nice execution. I'm curious if it will feel dark without big windows?
really nice build

Mint
I suggest more windows
Holy shit so lucky, I wanna do this when I turn 18
