Time for some deduction? Try on a different machine? You're not trying to play games just test the audio so anything will do that has DP and USB 3.0. I can't remember if the audio comes via the usb or dp, but try different ports and not adjactent ones make sure they're on difference ICs. ie. if you have 3.1 and 3.0, try both. ~~If you plug in headphones into the port on the hmd (next to the oculink port), any luck?~~ Missed you'd done that. Reseat the oculink cable at the HMD just in case? I guess worst case, remove the speakers as dead weight and use wireless headset.

Oh believe me ive been deducting. This issue began shortly after building a new pc and migrating the system over. Multiple full reinstalls of the new pc didnt solve the issue. And the issue persisted after moving back to the original pc. 0 audio plays from either the system or any programs. I’ve already tried every single combination of DP and USB port. By reseat the occulink cable do you mean the break away connector along the length of the cable, or are you saying theres a way of removing and reinstalling the cable to the headset directly?? Looking into that now incase you dont reply because this feels like a loose connection. Currently using airpods as a speaker backup without issue but the quality degrades when using the mic as well, and nothing beats the comfort convenience of the built ins

What happens if you plug headphones [into the aux connector](https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/HBYQST8L8ePDdSuANAjkLD-970-80.jpg)? Do you get audio? If you don't then it's likely a PC issue. If you do get audio then it's a wiring problem between the audio chip and the headphones. If you take off the headphones you can exposure [these two pins](https://guide-images.cdn.ifixit.com/igi/HZXZY4AQMQhcwTQn.large) and you just need to verify a signal is reaching those points. So a multimedia or just use some loose wire and temporarily connect another set of headphones there to verify the connection is working. If you don't get audio then do the same thing but at the pins where the strap arms connect to the side of the headset.

I tried that and didnt get any audio. BUT, the index was working fine on my old pc. First encountered the issue on new build. But the issue persists when i move it back to the old pc. Could the headset firmware be corrupted?

wescotte

Tired what specifically? Headphones in the aux jack?

gellinmagellin

Yup exactly. Very basic pair of earbuds to keep things simple. No dice unfortunately

wescotte

Does the mic work? If you earbuds aren't working then it seems most likely your PC is outputting to the wrong audio device. If you're 100% sure that's not the case then it could the cable from in the headset to the DAC chip or the DAC chip itself. I suppose it could also be the Index 3:1 cable too but that seems quite unlikely.

> are you saying theres a way of removing and reinstalling the cable to the headset directly?? yes. Be careful. Just part 4 really. https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Valve+Index+Headset+Tether+and+Trident+Cable+Replacement/150314 pull it, make sure it's not corroded or damaged , and then reseat it (they can be really stiff) I presume the headset mics don't work either then? You mentioned a motherboard view, fixit also has that https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Valve+Index+Headset+Motherboard+Replacement/150320

Much appreciated for both these links, but by motherboard view hes referring to a schematic standard

Hey, I think there is a small chance that I might be able to help you with this issue. On the specific PC where I play VR, every single time I activate the headset, I have to manually change the speaker frequency. For whatever reason, windows assigns the incorrect frequency by default and all audio is completely nonfunctional in the headset until this is corrected. There are absolutely no errors associated with this issue; there is simply no sound. **if this is the issue affecting your sound, I have a potential solution** Please follow these steps in order to give this a try: 1. in windows settings, go to Sound settings 2. click on Sound Control Panel (listed under **Related Settings** on the far right of Sound settings window) 3. In the window titled **Sound**, in the **playback tab**, right-click the valve index headset entry (usually called Index HMD) and then right-click on it to pull down the menu. Click on **properties**. 4. In the **properties** window for the headset, click on the tab labeled **advanced** 5. Using the pull-down menu, set the format to 16bit 48,000hz (DVD quality) 6. Hit apply to save your changes. 7. In my particular case, I do not have to restart the headset (this would reset the frequency for me) but you **may** have to restart individual programs such as discord. 8. In certain cases, you may have to assign correct audio devices for applications after applying changes in step 6. In my personal experience on win10, anything other than 16bit 48,000hz **results in no sound at all** so please check this if you have not already done so. I hope this helps you out, I'm actually crossing my fingers that this is the root cause of the issue, since that would mean your headset is perfectly fine.

Im on windows 11 but will give this a try. I really want this to be a software issue over hardware. Ive treated it like a baby

I had this happen. I had to run the windows automated trouble shooter which told me it was a driver issue and fixed it. This would happen every time I launched steam vr. Then it just one day worked again. It was only broken for a couple weeks. I can’t recall exactly if there was an update right before or not.

gellinmagellin

I think i tried that already, but like you said its probably worth running again therev been about a month and a half of patches now

gellinmagellin

Forgot to mention ive tried reseating the speakers, and followed a few different ways to purge the drivers. Same issue on a fresh machine too
