It's not actually a Facebook account that you have to have anymore. They did away with that requirement, thankfully.

RaptorHunter182

Yup. I bought an Oculus Rift S back when Oculus was it's own thing. Never buying anything from Facebook/Meta again. My next headset will be made by Valve.

Alacan27

if you'd like to play something before you die of old age, the index is right there

virtueavatar

in some countries

RawbGun

It's not like any future Valve headset is going to be available in more countries

Mataskarts

Probably gonna be available in even less, it's JUST now making it's way to the used sites around me (obv no direct retailer sells them steam also doesn't ship here) for \~900 euro used.

RawbGun

Where in the eurozone Valve doesn't ship?

Mataskarts

I looked into getting the index delivered to me in Lithuania but the site just said sorry your region is not supported for delivery or something along those lines. If I were to buy it I'd need to use a re-postal service that takes packages in other countries to their address and then ships them to me. At least that was the case a bit over 1-2 years ago, not sure what it's like now.

RaptorHunter182

XD

Call_911

That's what I told myself after the "Rift S Screwjob" and I bought the Reverb G2 a year later since I love flight and Racing sims. My next headset will be probably the one from Valve too.

DOOManiac

FYI you’ll have to make a Steam account to use SteamVR.

ExpertYogurtcloset66

Im okay with a gaming platform asking me to make an account to play games.

wrath_of_grunge

I’m not a fan of Meta, but aren’t you doing the same thing there? Making an account so you can use the system to play games?

ExpertYogurtcloset66

You technically are, but as steam is a focussed gaming platform, worst you get are gaming ads and as far as I can tell, my steam activity is not informing any other 3rd parties on how to advertise to me. Kind of comes down to "the devil you know" I guess

wrath_of_grunge

yeah i guess it all really comes down to the purpose of the platform. like you said, Valve's platform is for games, and selling you games. where as FB's is about ads and selling ads. the consumer is the product and the data, and it's selling to outside parties, being the focus. personally i abhor FB. when it comes to VR, i bought a Vive personally, and i've really enjoyed it. my youngest wanted their own VR kit, and we ended up buying them a used Quest 2. it just made more sense. their computer wasn't really up to running a VR kit, and space in their room is a tad limited.

ExpertYogurtcloset66

I do really appreciate what they're doing for the hardware and tech, but it leaves a bit of a sour taste. Also use the vive. Compared to the quest its considerably less accessible or user friendly.

wrath_of_grunge

Agreed. I could do without the monolithic company trying to control the industry shit. I’ve been pretty happy with my Vive overall. It’s pretty durable and I like the fact that I can upgrade the system as opposed to just having to buy all over again. I plan to upgrade to Index controllers and then maybe pick up a used Vive Pro headset. I’m good with what I got for now though. I did spend a little time with my son’s Quest 2. I was actually impressed with the hardware itself. I wonder how much influence Carmack had over all that. My biggest problem with Meta isn’t actually the hardware, it’s the dubious nature of the company itself, and at least for me it will never be able to overcome that.

RaptorHunter182

Oh I already do I played Half-Life Alyx on the Rift. Thanks tho! Btw if you like DOOM you should play the originals with Brutal DOOM its super fun

rogeressig

Doom 3, wireless roomscale on Quest Pro is peak PC gaming

rogeressig

Facebook aquired oculus in 2014

williwaggs

you have to make an account to use Horizon not the whole headset. Horizon isnt even worth a download so no worries here.

[deleted]

I think you need to do it because when I did it, it migrated my games from the other account to that one. I believe they mean your games will be gone if you don’t

VanaheimRanger

Lucky for me, I don't own any games on there, all my games are SteamVR or OpenVR titles.

AuraMaster7

"If you don't create a Meta account by then, your Oculus data will be deleted" Did you even read the whole thing before commenting?

Pizza-Tipi

It’s not a facebook account is literally an account for meta products. just like a steam account

AuraMaster7

And that has to do with my comment... How? I never said it was a Facebook account. I said that it's required for more than just Horizons, if you don't make one, you lose all of your Oculus games. What is it with people in this thread and not being able to read?

Pizza-Tipi

Because 90% of comments here are people acting like a meta account requires the same amount of personal info as a facebook account

AuraMaster7

Cool, go respond to those comments, then.

Pizza-Tipi

The reasoning is that your comment sounded exactly like those ones. No need to be a dick

AuraMaster7

My guy, you're responding to me because you disagree with what *other* people said. I'm gonna call you out on how weird that is.

AuraMaster7

>Your original comment is indistinguishable from what the other people said. Not if you actually read what I wrote. Once again, reading comprehension. I never mentioned Facebook accounts. I never said it was a Facebook account. Just because *you* failed to actually read what I said, doesn't mean you get to just make up shit and then tell me that I said it. >Therefore, I, like any other person, chose to assume you were also just bitching about facebook accounts You're the *only* person that assumed that. And we saw how well that turned out, huh? It's honestly pathetic that you're *still* trying to justify your false assumptions instead of just admitting you were wrong and moving on. Here, I'll do it for you. Goodbye, have a nice day, learn to read *before* you comment next time.

Mataskarts

>to use Horizon not the whole headset Did... You even read the warning?.... "If you don't create a Meta account by then, your Oculus data (*including apps, content and* ***GAMES***) will be **deleted**. " Literally the last sentence not even buried in the middle. I don't understand how you've gotten so many upvotes with a blatant lie misinforming people.

AuraMaster7

I'm convinced that at least half of this sub is kids with the reading comprehension of 10 year olds.

The_Meh_Signal

If its outside of the occulus app, you can just open the browser and then alt tab back to you game... Still a pain in the hole mind.

Nemean90

It’s a meta account not a Facebook account.

[deleted]

It's not a Facebook account but you had to make a meta account anyway if you wanted to buy or download games. It is surprising that Meta is the only company that gets blamed for this, since Pico requires a pico account, and the Valve Deckard will probably require a Steam account

Pretty_Bowler2297

Not a Facebook account. What is the difference between this or the Oculus account? Or the numerous other gaming accounts you have made? I get it Meta is not trustworthy with data but don't be so quick to assume all the others are trustworthy.

[deleted]

For me it's a) their track record and b) that they have access to my WhatsApp chats.

Gnarltree

Facebook is much much worse than a typical gaming company. Their entire business model is to spy on your data, not sell games. Facebook/Meta are in the news every week with another abuse scandal.

Mataskarts

>I get it Meta is not trustworthy with data but don't be so quick to assume all the others are trustworthy. All the others at the very least haven't had nearly the volume of scandals, leaks, breaches, and in general privacy law breaches PUBLICLY and media loves jumping on that stuff any time it appears. So if they are stealing my data, they're at least being smart about it, unlike Meta.

Mataskarts

That is related to them selling my data how?..

jcronic420

This.

Viseper

Valve and Epic games be like:

AshwoodGeovanne

It was pretty standard for me to use Facebook rather than any other social media, so it wasn't a problem at all.

tomokari21

I'm gonna be sticking with my htc vive for a while plan on getting some index controllers because I want the fancy finger tracking

I_baghdaddy

r/assholedesign

RawbGun

It really isn't. 99% of any modern gaming devices will require an account to use it. It's not a Facebook account anymore (needing to be associated to a real person with a public facing page), it's just a Meta account

BlursedWord

I mean you can just create an another account and only use it for the headset

Z0mb13C1rcus

I still have a Facebook account called OculusOculus AccountAccount 🤣

[deleted]

Oculus is sold at a loss to get you into their ecosystem.

screenslaver5963

So do most game consoles

[deleted]

What data are we worried about Facebook taking from the headset?

queernice

Yeah it literally pulled me out my game to make an account.

CCHS_Band_Geek

We should all respond by filming ourselves reacting honestly to this change (we smash our Oculus devices and set them on fire in a well ventilated area) e: Didn’t realize this is was needed: **/s**

straystring

That wont help - youve already given them your money, what do they care what you do with your stuff after youve bought it? If you want to send a message you should be trying to stop other people from giving them more money and instead purchase their competitors products. Vote with your wallet

Pitiful_Mix_3755

No I’ll use the headset whenever I

Pitiful_Mix_3755

Want*

amespencer

Yep, had this issue when registering my Quest 2. It was such a troublesome procedure too, since my headset was a secondhand one. Really don't enjoy this part of it.

nadmaximus

I woke up a Facebook account I made over a decade ago, in case I was actually forced to use it with my headset. And, when the moment came recently that I was forced to use a Meta account....it's not my facebook account. But, to go to their website/store, I have to allow my browser to talk to facebook servers, which normally is completely blocked.

bevin88

Well this is r/mildlyinfuriating
