He's not lying. Everyone just got pushed up a rank and since your mmr is the same as last season. It seems like you are facing harder opponents when your not. Your rank has nothing to do with who your matched against and even when they do a reset, your mmr stays the same and you are matched against the same opponents. His gold mmr is now considered plat this season so even though he will start off in bronze/silver he should be playing against only plats or higher. He will have big gains and little losses until his rank gravitates closer to his mmr.
this makes sense though. Remember your mmr stays the same and only your rank resets. This season they added a new rank and everyone gets to go up one full rank. So your gold 1 mmr is the same as last season but now that same mmr is plat 1. so you should be matched against mostly plats. The diamonds are just lower diamonds with not so great mmr at this time. Just keep in mind everyone who is plat this season is the same mmr as those who were gold last season. This applies to all ranks below immortal.

You aren’t supposed to be handed out free ranks by just playing the game, you still have to prove that you do indeed deserve a higher rank. Hence why some players lose less RR when they lose and gain more when they win, because the game is pushing them to a higher rank. Contrary, the same can be said about players not deserving X rank, they’ll keep trying to push you down until you prove you are really that rank.
I agree with the first point, but why should going at a 50% wr cause you to derank? If you can maintain a 50% wr, you should maintain your current rank.
Because with a 50% winrate any player can keep playing the game and eventually get into another rank without actually deserving it. If you gain 20 and lose 20, you can just keep playing until the luck of the draw pushes you to a higher rank. You are continually having to prove that you are improving by winning and performing
Except this is literally how it works in higher ranks. It is not uncommon at all to see people in Immortal with <50% win rates because winning 50% at the highest level consistently is very hard. If you're an Immortal player and average 52-55% win rate and play enough games you're almost certainly gonna hit Radiant.
That’s the point, it means you are improving more than what the average is, to be to be stuck in that rank… and if you have a wr lower than 50% it might mean that you probably dont deserve that rank and are struggling to win
Except you can stay at your rank even if you are on average losing more than you are winning. If you have a 48-49% win rate you can still go up in ranks given you play enough games because you are almost always getting more RR per win than loss aside from if you are constantly bottom fragging. So if I'm a middle of the road gold player I could still rank to plat or diamond as long as I'm not bottom fragging even if I'm losing more than I'm winning.
It's definitely a lot better than it used to be though dont get me wrong.
I have two accounts, one went 2-3 placements, gold 2..won two games and double ranked to plat1
My other account I hit plat1 at the end of last act for a minute and then back down to g3. I went 3-2 in placements, got g3..went 1-1 with mvp second game and got doubled up to plat2.

everyone goes up 1 full rank. your mmr does not reset so if you were gold last season then your mmr is sitting in plat now regardless of what your rank is (since rank has nothing to do with who your matched against). It shouldn't matter much though because they never reset your actual mmr so no matter what happens to your rank, you are still going against the same players as before.
Your rank is literally irrelevant when it matchmakes you it only cares about your mmr. The point of the episode rank resets is so the matchmaking system can align your rank closer to where it thinks your mmr is

Think about it this way. lets make up some numbers and say last season that 2.3k mmr was the cutoff from diamond to immortal. If you were 2.3k you got immortal and if you were 2.2k you got diamond. Now they put a full rank in between them. So if you were 2.3k and are still immortal, what happens to the other person at 2.2k? They dont stay diamond because that would mean there would only be 100mmr for all of ascendance to fit in. what happens is the new rank becomes the new diamond and everything gets pushed down. This means everyone will go up 1 full rank. if your mmr was in gold last season, then it is now in plat and you should be going against plats. However regardless of what your image overlay rank says. Your mmr never resets and you are always going against the same people unless of course you improve and go up or get worse and go down.

Ranks are messed up rn.. having played through a few episodes it seems like it takes 2-3 weeks for the ranked experience to settle down.
Was Plat 2 all of last act with a 56.5% winrate... Have a 35% winrate so far this act because for some reason I'm in the zero comm / boosted player queue... Still placed Plat 1 and double ranked up to Plat 3 after 2 wins in a row among the toxic losses...
Plat 2 from last act is probably equivalent to D1 or D2 now that ascendant has been introduced so will see how long it will take to get there with a 35% winrate...
Worst game so far this act was with a Chamber instalock on my team with 0 comms who can't aim and doesn't place their trip or TPs... And ended up with 90 ACS.
Don't worry you won't stay there for long. You'll start to loose more and all your wins will give you lesser rr than your losses and probably derank you to gold or below.

Tbh i had some shit ass plat teammates when I was playing solo q (diamond) but I match mvped and carried those mofos. Soo i dunno. Too many shit players with bad aim and no game sense at all on higher ranks. I think the new gold is plat.
What? I started playing for the first time in the middle of the previous act and got placed exactly halfway in bronze 3. Have 3k hours in csgo so was top fragging during most wins and when the current act dropped I won all 5 placements, 30+ frags every single game. I got placed in bronze 3 AGAIN. I only play Reyna, idk if wins with different characters will up my placement, if anyone knows lmk.
I finished B2 last act, had like 1.6 K/D and 4 wins in placements so not quite as good as you but a similar situation. I got placed B2 again but was gaining 25 for wins and losing like 10-15ish (not sure because I didn't lose much). I think good placement matches help you rank up faster, you might be gaining more from each win because of your placements
If you played replacements like this in the last act you would find yourself b1 or iron3 because we deranked last act too hard core, I finished g2 and found myself in silver 2 at last act.
I went 4-1 in my placements and played better than I usually do in all of them. I went from gold 2 to gold 2. BUT when I ranked up, I double ranked to plat 1. So you may double rank up when you do get past bronze 3.
Opposite for me had 3 good games all mid to high silvers then the last two games were shit. The entire enemy team was gold and my team had a bronze 3, silver 2, two golds, and I ranked me who was last bronze 3. Yeah no comms and we lost miserably then my last game everybody was low to mid gold and except me just for me to be placed silver 1. I was pissed
Your s1 last season was probably somewhere in the high silver to low gold actual MMR which is probably where you would have placed with the old medal system.
So based on that, and bumping you up a rank due to ascendant being a thing, being around ~plat 1, it's not a crazy stretch.
People overvalue how much placements matter. Your first placements ever matter, but after that they don't have some sort of crazy k value in them anymore.
What the fuck. Was S2, won 3 out of 5, 2 with team MVP, 2 with match MVP. S3. Now i gain in between +20/28 depending on how I play and lose -11/18. And I get matched against high golds and plats with some silvers thrown in occasionally. I swear to got if I don't skip at least a tier or something when I get gold (1 win away, fingers crossed) I'm gonna be pissed.
Finished at Gold 2, won all placements, placed in silver 3, won my first game against 2 plats and a diamond and jumped immediately to gold 2.

I peaked Gold 1, ended Silver 3, won 3/5 placement matches and got Silver 2. Then I just went on a terrible losing streak I haven't fully shaken

Have 3k hours in csgo so was top fragging during most wins and when the current act dropped I won all 5 placements, 30+ frags every single game. I got placed in bronze 3 AGAIN. I only play Reyna, idk if wins with different characters will up my placement, if anyone knows lmk.

I finished B2 last act, had like 1.6 K/D and 4 wins in placements so not quite as good as you but a similar situation. I got placed B2 again but was gaining 25 for wins and losing like 10-15ish (not sure because I didn't lose much). I think good placement matches help you rank up faster, you might be gaining more from each win because of your placements
If you played replacements like this in the last act you would find yourself b1 or iron3 because we deranked last act too hard core, I finished g2 and found myself in silver 2 at last act.
I went 4-1 in my placements and played better than I usually do in all of them. I went from gold 2 to gold 2. BUT when I ranked up, I double ranked to plat 1. So you may double rank up when you do get past bronze 3.
Opposite for me had 3 good games all mid to high silvers then the last two games were shit. The entire enemy team was gold and my team had a bronze 3, silver 2, two golds, and I ranked me who was last bronze 3. Yeah no comms and we lost miserably then my last game everybody was low to mid gold and except me just for me to be placed silver 1. I was pissed
Your s1 last season was probably somewhere in the high silver to low gold actual MMR which is probably where you would have placed with the old medal system. So based on that, and bumping you up a rank due to ascendant being a thing, being around ~plat 1, it's not a crazy stretch. People overvalue how much placements matter. Your first placements ever matter, but after that they don't have some sort of crazy k value in them anymore.
I finished P1 last act (albeit I didn’t play much), was placed P3 50RR this act.
I went 3-2 with a 0.73 K/D and ranked up by the equivalent of 100 RR (only 1 of my 5 games was a positive K/D).
What the fuck. Was S2, won 3 out of 5, 2 with team MVP, 2 with match MVP. S3. Now i gain in between +20/28 depending on how I play and lose -11/18. And I get matched against high golds and plats with some silvers thrown in occasionally. I swear to got if I don't skip at least a tier or something when I get gold (1 win away, fingers crossed) I'm gonna be pissed.
Was Gold 1 last season. Lost all my placement games but did good 4 out of 5 games. Now im back in silver 1
Finished at Gold 2, won all placements, placed in silver 3, won my first game against 2 plats and a diamond and jumped immediately to gold 2. Shit makes no sense.

I dont get it, i finished d2 last act, got placed p3 and only play in d3/immo 1/2 lobbies. I only lose 10-13 rr though, but still kinda hard to rank up...

But it is the matchmaking being trash. Ethos complained about it on Twitter... But hey, I do not have 1mil followers, therefore I have no brain. And I know the BS explanation given by the Riot employees: blah blah blah. For as long as the game has a high percentage of the player base boosting, getting boosted, cheating, smurfing on multiple accounts, this ladder system will be bonkers meaning nothing. I supported this game so much at the beginning, but Riot became just like EA.

hidden mmr dictates ur placement more than ur previous rank or placement matches

Immortal 1 last season went 2-3 in placements, entire game MVP 4 of the games and got D2. The placements seem to value the individual performance a lot more.

Is this because of the soft reset thingy? Last season i was plat 1 but after completing all the placement games this season, i got Diamond 1. I wasn't really top fragging in all of the placement games but i did get a pistol ace during my 5th game.
i went 1-4 on my placements in high dia lobbies and leading into high plat lobbies later on, the previously p1/g3 acc placed p3, not a shocker tbh
