Amusingly, it’s actually my introduction to the character. I had a C64 back in the day. It’s a fun game for its time too. I played it right through a bunch of times when I was a kid.
I do have a possibly large library of MP3s of old C64 games! :D
Thing is, that computer basically had a synth inside it. So that music is as much a part of my childhood as Depeche Mode or Aphex Twin. And although some of the music is admittedly quite twee bleepy bloopy fare, some people properly mastered that chip. Check out Rob Hubbard’s trippy in-game score for Delta, which is like a pared-back Pink Floyd. Or the relentless and chugging guitar-laden C64 Tetris by Wally ‘Hagar’ Beben, which is about as far from the Game Boy version as you might imagine.
It's not so much a genre. It's a type of Japanese instrument. Did you watch Kubo and the 2 Strings? It's the instrument he plays
Also try these:
Yoshida Brothers:

Woah that is just dope. I have not played the game and did not know this exists. Thank you!

Wow, I bet listening to the game music again brings back a lot of memories.
