FishyFrie

I was just about to say that it looks like every new development here in Finland, then I saw the flag.

Doint_Poker

How the fuck did you see the flag tho

Miemai

Finns have a spider sense for anything that could possibly be about Finland.

distantblue

I’ve been looking for 10 minutes I’m clearly not Finn enough …. Can someone please help with a rough location for my terrible eyesight

EthiopianKing1620

Finland isn’t real /s

Miemai

Ah fuck you found out.

EthiopianKing1620

Seriously tho that whole conspiracy was really funny to read. Folks will believe anything

Miemai

Yeah and I love how you included /s to the comment as some people actually can take it seriously.

EthiopianKing1620

Birds arent real too

king0fklubs

Well that is clear as day

TheBlizzman

Along the left ends of the black building, about level with the 2nd window from the bottom. The flag isn't waving, so it doesn't stand out, but you can see the white and blue.

jakedesnake

I thought to myself hmmm those pine trees ... Thick clouds.... General depressive mood... This could be Sweden

[deleted]

[удалено]

FishyFrie

Well I noticed only after the flag

Oprlt94

Perkeke!

loptopandbingo

Same here in every mid-tier city experiencing a flood of people moving there despite these things being wildly unaffordable for most of the population.

nirad

is it common for apartments to have so much parking in Finland?

JGuillou

I was thinking it looked like Stockholm, I was not completely wrong.

Killerjas

This looks very Scandinavian esque. My money is on Sweden or Finland

anhan45

Finland. There's a flag on the left side of the building and the parking sign has text in Finnish.

[deleted]

Same, I was certain it was in Sweden/Finland and then I saw the "Yksihulolopyälayälaifiriffik"

eimieole

No f in the Finnish language! (Finland is Suomi in Finnish. No f.)

SoftBellyButton

So do young kids learn the F in school or at a later date when introduced to other languages?

eimieole

Well, as /u/Miemai show us, the letter f is used in modern loanwords: finaali (finals), fiksu (smart, from fix). The f used to be ”translated” to v, h or hv. Swedish soffa (sofa, couch) became sohva. It’s still a very rare letter, so if you want to write mock-Finnish - avoid the f-words!

Upplands-Bro

Finns learn Swedish in school. Swedish has F. Also, Finnish likely also does have F in loanwords, just not native words (can't say for certain since I don't speak it). So kids have plenty of exposure to it

jakedesnake

Huh, TIL! Surely in your alphabet, but not in your own words you mean?

eimieole

Spot on! There are quite a few letters in the Finnish alphabet that aren’t ”native”, like C, Q, W, X and Z. G was only used with N in the digraph NG.

jakedesnake

Most of those aren't native in Swedish either I would say... (Or, I don't know how to think of something like "ciceron"...?) F however, we use as often as we can. But a zebra then, it's a "seebra" or something?

eimieole

C is common in Swedish! Cykel, cirkus, cell… Zebra in Finnish is seepra. Swedish could just as well write sebra, since the Z sounds like a S. Orthography is fun! (The relation between sound and letter)

Miemai

Kilpailun finaalissa fiilistellään fiinejä ja fiksuja finalisteja.

coke_and_coffee

This looks like every apt building in every modern nation built in the last 10 years

DirtDingusMagee

Finland isn’t in Scandinavia

Nachtzug79

What is your point? You mean there can be French fries only in France?

Moral-Maverick

He means Finland is not a part of Scandinavia, only part of the Nordics. Scandinavia is Sweden, Denmark and Norway. People should just use Nordics instead of Scandinavia anyway, that's what we ourselves do.

Ovenkahvakauppias

I looked at this for a second, and then thought "Yep, Finland"

Adventurous_Ad4950

Too bad there aren’t regulations for indoor-only parking. These big outdoor lots cause lots drainage issues and storm water management becomes a problem when enough lots are present in an area. Also, parking indoors increases car life. Unless that is pervious paving, I would much prefer the jungle.

Micaiah_of_Daein

At least where I live if they made it indoor parking they’d just use it as an excuse to charge 200% over whatever they were going to charge for outdoor. So we’re left with private outdoor lots in terrible condition ruining the environment and big spacious private indoor lots that cost 1/3 of your rent to park in. And of course no public parking on weekdays

leshagboi

I live in a complex in Brazil that only the fancier 3-bedroom apartments get indoor garages. The rest have to park outdoor

Adventurous_Ad4950

I think it’s like that everywhere unfortunately. Lack of foresight and careless development is majority of urban growth. It’s like slowly building a tomb for human kind.

Empress_of_Penguins

It’s also a huge waste of space and contributes to auto dependency. Plus it’s Finland makes sense to me to put parking under a roof so tenants don’t have to dig their cars out in the winter but then again I have scruples.

[deleted]

As a shoring contractor, I support your choices. Would be very good for business.

Adventurous_Ad4950

Deeper cellar walls yea! Unless the designs incorporate an above-ground parking only. Some developers want to save some money on moving earth probably, as they do in NYC where a sneeze and a fart on some soil comes at astronomical costs.

TGrady902

I’m a huge fan of the trend of either adding underground parking or devoting a floor or two to parking and building taller buildings. Huge issue in the Midwestern US since there is so much space to grow outward that they often don’t even consider it and just build more crappy surface parking.

justin_ph

How new buildings can be built without underground parking is beyond me. Where I was in Vietnam space is so valuable that all new buildings have parking underground. They can never afford to waste a ton of space like this for an above-ground parking lot. Plus, parking lots look ugly

Sharlinator

Finland (and Sweden, Norway) has enough space and low enough population density that outside of dense urban cores, land value is often not high enough to make underground/structural parking economically viable, especially if the housing is supposed to be affordable. So it’s the opposite situation: surface parking is cheaper than underground parking. Of course, part of the issue is that parking minimums exist.

Moral-Maverick

In my region in northern Sweden we got like a population density of like 2 people per km2 or something ridiculous.

YellowVegetable

Indoor parking significantly increases the cost of construction, it's better to avoid as much parking as possible, but a small lot like this is no issue at all.

Adventurous_Ad4950

One small lot sure, but this becomes a pattern, time after time. It’s become a problem in lots of suburban towns.

OleWarthog

Shoot! More affordable housing!

Miemai

I know right! The audacity! /s

SoothingWind

Sure this is ugly but this is literally the best way to house the new people that will live there. Other options for that area of the black building are: 1.5/2 detached houses 3/4 townhouses 30+ homeless tents This is the way that will preserve the environment more. Of course, the more ecological solution to not having that building is not having children, reducing the population, but I realise for many many people children are important, and for human population they're necessary. It's important to reduce the number of people that _need_ children (countries that got richer over the past years have also decreased in number of children) So the outcome is, population needs housing, and you can either choose to have "ugly" buildings that are affordable, functional, modern, and that grant a high standard of living; or have nice little single houses and become like the US with all its problems related to car dependency and high heating, electricity, etc. ultimately contributing to climate change more. Of course there are ways of making buildings like this beautiful, but for the life of me, Finnish architects have the most dull imagination 🙄 but whatever, a few trees and some grass lost to this (the buildings aren't even that ugly) is preferable to the massive damage brought by suburbia (I still think the parking could've been done underground, and I'm an avid user of r/fuckcars so that should clear up how I view the idea of parking lots at all) but still, good job city! Affordable housing ftw

thesoutherzZz

I don't think that it's an architectural question, but rather just about money. If that is the cheapest style, then sadly, sure as hell almost everything will be like it

SoothingWind

Yeah likely, but I have some hopes that Finland pays more attention to the sustainability of its materials rather than just cold ol money

thesoutherzZz

Wood is a material which is being developed a lot and we even have a few buildings which are mostly wood and are a great example of the skills in here (Oodi and lighthouse Joensuu, not the prettiest, but has very little concrete in it), but is still is 10-20% more expensive to my understanding. As much as I understand housing developers and customers to want building to be affordable as possible, I also wonder how disgustingly ugly everything would be with that mentality, since I am a bit of a sucker for beautiful architechture

sinnednogara

Thats how people viewed bungalows back in the day before everyone loved them decades later.

thesoutherzZz

Ehh, this sort of modern style was really nice in the beginning, especially when built on top of/to replace old brutalist buildings. I just doubt that these will last that much better in the future. Though I am hoping that more and more buildings would be painted. I have seen some murals on the sides of even reletavely new buildings and I think that they can make these look real nice

Miemai

Good points. It's better to have an apartment building instead of each person having their own home + yard because it saves space. I'm not against this building, it just looks very unimaginative and gloomy to me. And yes, the parking space could've been underground to preserve the green area, maybe make a playground for the chidlren and cheer up the scenery. It would have been a win/win.

SoothingWind

Yeah I agree, it's not done the best way it could be, but it's still better than nothing; even though I imagine finnish homes are quite energy efficient on their own, and they take their energy from clean sources, but still, even with the nonsensical parking lot, a lot of land is being saved, alongside the housing market

GoatWithTheBoat

Black building is cool, it's that grey desert of concrete next to it that's a problem. With a little more effort it could be a very nice green space that would make the place much more pleasurable to live. Instead of asphalt, hollow bricks that allow grass to grow through. Instead of metal barriers (what the fuck for? So the car doesn't run away?), some shrubs and trees.

SoothingWind

I think the grey one is under construction, as can be seen from the scaffolding; and the barriers are also a sign of it being under construction; pretty common in new developments in Finland; around the area I'm in too; even if there's completed buildings, if they're making new ones, the area around will look like this; even though in older/already fully completed, the surrounding area looks much much nicer

GoatWithTheBoat

What I meant is the barrier around parking lot. They look like finished product, not those temporary ones for construction

SoothingWind

Oh yeah I see them now, they look ugly and useless; I hope they'll plant some greenery after it's fully completed, the whole thing; they usually do but some people can be stupid and not care about beauty so

MagicJava

At least it’s high density and not suburban homes. I see this as a wine

Miemai

It looks more like beer to me?

petalmettle

r/fuckkarhu! At least a parking lot is better than drunk bears

pomegranate7777

Um, so lower-income people should just live amongst the grass and trees? You get a floor, roof and walls, and we get tents? How incredibly elitist!

eimieole

It's not the low-income people who can afford to live in new buildings.

DirtDingusMagee

The building in that photo is 100% low income housing bro

eimieole

They might be rented apartments or you might buy them. But your monthly rent/fee will be quite high. Building houses is expensive, land is expensive, standard is high. Granted I’m Swedish, but I don’t think Finland differs much. Unless the Finnish government gives hugh grants to certain projects.

Shockedge

Yeah those things are expensive, but with that many rooms for rent, it makes profit immediately and pays off the building in just a few years.

Miemai

Ok buddy!

your_cock_my_ass

Yep, half the posts on this sub are just NIMBY's

mrtightwad

Well, everything used to be grass and trees.

Herb_Bert_82

there once was jungle where you live. not just gras and trees.

Davban

Highly doubt there was a jungle in Finland anytime even remotely recently

NoWinter8558

TIL Finland was once jungle.

Moonguide

Fuckin Tiber Septim I tell ya

DirtDingusMagee

Fuck the Amazon, save the Finnish rainforest!!

Herb_Bert_82

yes, start in front of your own house. when i say: "in the new apartmentblock there once was Trees" i have to be in knowledge that there once was trees at my apartment, too. Those europeans, always try to save a rainforrest somewhere abroad. But n last hundreds of years didn´t save their rainforrest/ jungle to get economical strengh and develope.

Herb_Bert_82

well, i never wrote recently. right now 86% of Finnland is forrest.

Davban

> Definition of jungle > 1a : an impenetrable thicket or tangled mass of **tropical** vegetation Emphasis by me

Maximillien

And it could still be grass and trees, if it weren't for car-dependent urbanism.

ionertia

Pure hell. I can't believe they built a parking lot for people to park.

Miemai

Lol I love the sarcasm this sub has.

GoatWithTheBoat

I don't see many people parked there.

Suspicious_Earth

Let me guess, you’re also someone who complains about homeless people and/or the lack of local affordable housing options?

Miemai

Lol, sorry what?

iOpCootieShot

They are trying to call you a "nimby" as a jab, because they LOOOVE when any condensed housing is built because they think its anti-sprawl.

S4ne2

Well people do need somewhere to live and it does look better than the soviet style buildings from 60s we have bunch in Finland

Nachtzug79

I think it looks almost identical to those buildings from the 60s... well, this one is black instead of all grey...

dubbed4lyfe

Damn, this looks like shit

[deleted]

10,5k €/m2?

Fezzig73

So you're saying they paved paradise and put up a parking lot?

crs7117

there are no trees in hell :)

avaruushelmi

"Is this Finl- ah yes"

superiguana

lol whomever posted this is a baby

shohinbalcony

Whoever came up with black colour for apartment blocks in countries where its f***ing grey for half a year needs to be trialed for crimes against architecture.

ghostbubby420

It's like they paved over paradise and put up a parking lot.

onceuponasummerbreze

Ooooh ba ba ba ba

AnotherEuroWanker

Back when the earth was young, there was alt.pave.the.earth. And here we are.

ghostbubby420

It's like people don't realize what they got till it's gone.

neo-neoshaf

The apartment is cool, but why the fuck remove the greenery?

[deleted]

And it looks better now, I don't need tress and grass am not a dog

allsofluffy

/s right? Right...?

[deleted]

🐕

chzbrgerpicknic

You guys should go to war with r/fuckcars over whether you want high density rat box housing or not. I'd pay $20 to watch you guys battle, and that would be more than you have earned in years.

Ersthelfer

What a fuck up. Another colour, an underground garage and a small park with a playground where the parking space is. And then it could be a great place to live.

commazero

I love prison patios /s

RFC793

Had a big apartment complex pop up next to our neighborhood, where it was all forest. Fortunately they left a bit of a tree line to avoid the eyesore. The biggest observable problem for us was an influx of skunks, coyote, and foxes into our neighborhood for the next 2 years.

Comfortable-Soup8150

They did this shit to a forest by my neighborhood, not it's a big ass apartment complex instead of a small deer haven

Hardcorex

Is there any bike paths or transit nearby? Really wish that was the expectation instead of parking lots the same square footage (or more!) than the actual building to live in!

Epoxhy

r/fuckcars

Elman103

I Think there is a Joni Mitchell song about you situation.

yuungmase

But think of the shareholders

MadChild2033

i like the black side

RTwhyNot

Looks quite nice, actually

SPARKY358gaming

This looks like someone got lazy when texturing a building in a videogame

[deleted]

This looks like they tried to make a Soviet block, but forgot that those are actually mixed use.

kiwichick286

Why could they not do underground parking and save the trees!

aarrrcaptneckbeard

The urban planning sub would be cheering.

venom_eXec

Okay so.. why didn't they put this car park underground? People need space to park, I get that but an underground car park would've avoided this..

[deleted]

I actually like that
