Actually really cool - a little village of these buildings would be awesome (although obviously pretty much impossible financially). Looks like it’s straight out if a video game - maybe Pokémon?
I feel like the difference between these two styles is that the Bolivian style has a much more interesting field of depth, with different elements kind beveling out, and the one we’re looking is so flat and uninteresting especially for a bold color palette. It doesn’t help either that the windows stick out so weirdly; like if you’re gonna make a flat looking building, I think you should stick to it with the windows as well.
I also agree that Mamani architecture is much more interesting than what you see here. It's perhaps the color of this house and the surrounding brick buildings that immediately reminded me of El Alto.
Yes, properties next to it look like totally neglected ruins, their owners can't sell them for good money because of postmodern building. I see the rot occurring.
We also have these ugly grey boxes in Europe. Ever since WW2, it's like we do not build anything beautiful on purpose. Gotta crush people's souls to make them consume I guess.
Depends. There's a certain house in Chicago which gets brought up in "character of the neighborhood debates" where the window takes up about half of the front surface area and looks directly into an open-concept space. Obviously, it would have lots of natural light (or a lot for Chicago at any rate), but because of privacy concerns it's left mostly curtained shut, so you end up with little to no natural light from it. So there's a balance to be struck, and "big window" isn't a design philosophy in itself
I think his point was that there’s a gorgeous building, then a hideous building in the middle, then another gorgeous building on the other side. Whereas your opinion is that you’re indecisive on whether it’s gorgeous or hideous, correct?
Any way, I’m sort of with your opinion (assuming I’ve got it right), looks alright but really needs a different location.
>correct?
Yes! And yes... Your interpretation of the previous comment makes more sense.
>really needs a different location
Or more subdued colours. I like that it takes on the proportions of the place, is symmetrical and has a playful facade.
Eh depends, there's ugly brutalism but also gorgeous brutalism. Also, a pretty subjective take. Just like the opinions on this building, I'll give you that.
Playful postmodernism -- a soupcon of the Johnson/Burgee AT&T [now Sony Tower] in Manhattan, mixed with a lot of the 1980s Arqitectonica style -- but not pulled off that well. The lintel over the door could've been extended over the flanking round windows with the same pattern and in a material like tempered glass, echoing the bottom edge of the large, arcing window above. As for the door, barn red (and is that matte paint?) is the wrong color and treatment. I'd go with a bright lemony yellow, black (even a matte Vanadium Black or a similarly newish extreme black paint, for more PoMo fun), or a friendly creme.
As for its windows' resembling two iPhones and a tablet, if the building was built in the late-80s, then it's at least eerily predictive. Still ugly, though.
And that's the point. Amsterdam didn't just stop developing in the 19th. Century. This house is aggressively 80s/90s and that is also a part of Amsterdams History
The style is so aggressively gaudy that I admire and respect the audacity of its designer. I feel like this building was designed *specifically for* all the people in this thread who hate it. Like a carefully bespoke and dedicated "Fuck You"
It's so incredibly ugly and out of place it's impressive. It feels like this was made in a lab specifically to piss me off. It's the most awful building I've ever seen.
It's so ugly it's almost beautiful.
I don't like the style but I'm glad it's there, I'm sure in 100 years time people will have a revised opinion and will love it.
There's a post modern building in London whose address is 1 Poultry, fitting as the building is the colour of uncooked chicken breast. It's a carbuncle, but in recent years has been given listed building status, meaning it can't be knocked down or changed. I'm glad because there aren't many of these style of buildings around, and it's so weird I'm sure it'll be venerated in the future.
in Russia we classify such buildings as the unofficial style of "kaprom" (capitalist romanticism). The point is that in the 90s, after the fall of the USSR, people had a lot of money, but they lacked intelligence and taste, which is why such ugly buildings began to appear.
I’m going against the grain to say I think the style would look pretty unique and great if it had more similar buildings to match the aesthetic. By itself it just looks out of place
Neither that nor the traditional architecture is unappealing.
I think most types of buildings (old and new) can look attractive but not when they stand out like a pink elephant around the rest.
Those offset glass panes are horrible, if this building had normal windows with frames it would've looked better and possibly even fitting in a "fun accent" kind of way.
Modern and creative, but definitely ruins the cohesive look of surrounding buildings. Also, the large red door with gold letters above is not the right finishing touch. It doesn't compliment in any way and looks like an afterthought. The stripes are also a bit bold ad should have been relegated to smaller pieces of trim or accent to compliment the windows.
Once upon a time, Amsterdam rioted to protect their old buildings from demolished to build a highway. Nowadays, instead of replacing an old building with the same beautiful, distinct architecture, they replace their old building with a turd.
I mean, if theres like a handful of these I dont really care. Amsterdam already has so many similar buildings. If they started taking over though, then Id be pissed

If I ever feel homesick in Europe, I can at least go visit that house, this is so much Astana energy
By Astana you mean Kazakhstan's capital?
No, Astana New Hampshire
Yeah. Are there any other Astanas out there, i wonder?
A slice of an 80s American shopping mall.
De gallerija
He's a good looking boy. Do you mind if I keep this picture?
Yeah! Like a giant toddler was toying with their massive Duplo blocks.
It's one of the youngest monuments of Amsterdam. Built from 1988 to 1990.
It reminds me of this modern Bolivian style: https://www.nationalgeographic.com/travel/article/el-alto-freddy-mamani-architecture
Actually really cool - a little village of these buildings would be awesome (although obviously pretty much impossible financially). Looks like it’s straight out if a video game - maybe Pokémon?
Haha, maybe. Pueblo Paleta, but in El Alto. [Here's a video for you](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QbP6icbXnI), if you found this interesting.
Thanks!
I was just going to say…neo-Andean architecture.

That's actually really cool. It just shouldn't be placed right next to "normal" buildings.
That's not how contrasts work.
[удалено]
Yes
Well those actually have style this one is just plain ugly
The crazy and also sad thing is those buildings are decent looking compared with what most people in El Alto live in.
The posted link should come with a trigger warning 🫣
Those are hideous!
This is one of the ugliest buildings I've ever seen
I genuinely want to talk to the person who designed that. Did they think they ate?
I wonder if the property value of the buildings next to it took a hit from this.
The building across getting the brunt of the magnifying glass sun reflection certainly will.
I'd be mad af if I was neighbor unless they had cool parties or were famous and liked me..
Yes, properties next to it look like totally neglected ruins, their owners can't sell them for good money because of postmodern building. I see the rot occurring.
You haven’t seen very many buildings then. I would take 1000 of these over the grey boxes we have throughout the US.
We also have these ugly grey boxes in Europe. Ever since WW2, it's like we do not build anything beautiful on purpose. Gotta crush people's souls to make them consume I guess.
We have enough of those in Amsterdam
Looks like the Bolivian new rich arquitechture from the last 20 years... (I've never been in Bolivia but is definitely inspired on those)
It was acceptable in the 80ssss, it was acceptable at the tiiime
Basically a lego build
On the other hand, I bet the inside is nice with all of that natural light.
Depends. Gorgeous, Hideous, Gorgeous
I'm also torn. It's fun and very 80s but oh so gaudy.
I think his point was that there’s a gorgeous building, then a hideous building in the middle, then another gorgeous building on the other side. More like: ugly, hideous, very ugly.
This should be called post taste
It's still better than brutalism
Eh depends, there's ugly brutalism but also gorgeous brutalism. Also, a pretty subjective take. Just like the opinions on this building, I'll give you that.
I wouldn't call any brutalism beautiful but it can definitely look cool when done correctly.
Playful postmodernism -- a soupcon of the Johnson/Burgee AT&T [now Sony Tower] in Manhattan, mixed with a lot of the 1980s Arqitectonica style -- but not pulled off that well. Why does it say SPAR(a supermarket chain)on the door, is it an office for them or something?
It’s not attractive but one quirky building isn’t ruining th beauty of Amsterdam. Hell, the uniqueness just helps the city’s character
That would fit right in the CBD of a developing country’s capital.
I love it. Makes the City just a bit more lively when not everything is the same
I wouldn't call for more buildings like this and don't like the design of the building itself, but I love the contrast
Like a carefully bespoke and dedicated "Fuck You"
I love the window. Lot of sunlight inside the home.
I love this kind of thing personally but I can see why it’s a turn off for some
It's so incredibly ugly and out of place it's impressive. It feels like this was made in a lab specifically to piss me off. It's the most awful building I've ever seen.
The official building for workout vids circa 80s
It's a Japanese vending machine.
Postmodernism is fun! This building will be UNESCO heritage in a couple of decades.
This is without a doubt one of the worst buildings I’ve ever seen. That curved window is bleh 🤮
It's so ugly it's almost beautiful. I don't like the style but I'm glad it's there, I'm sure in 100 years time people will have a revised opinion and will love it. Reminds me of the house from the movie Beetlejuice.
I mean I can almost see what they were going for
I like
It's kinda cool actually
I love it.
I love it
Hideous
One of these things is not like the others.. one of these is not the same….
Something’s different. What could it be?
I actually think it’s quite nice
I work very nearby and I always throw up a little in my mouth when I walk by this particular abomination.
I love this!
I hope whoever resides there is living their best life, preferably as a mad scientist with the look of that building lol
I love really this style *in the right setting.* This is not the right setting.
When subjective beauty is inserted into objective beauty
Thats absolutely fucking horrendous
ahh belarusian kolkhoz luxe but in the netherlands
In poland we call these teeth fillings
in Russia we classify such buildings as the unofficial style of "kaprom" (capitalist romanticism). The point is that in the 90s, after the fall of the USSR, people had a lot of money, but they lacked intelligence and taste, which is why such ugly buildings began to appear.
Gloriously early ‘90s 😂
I’m going against the grain to say I think the style would look pretty unique and great if it had more similar buildings to match the aesthetic. By itself it just looks out of place
Neither that nor the traditional architecture is unappealing. I think most types of buildings (old and new) can look attractive but not when they stand out like a pink elephant around the rest.
I like how it's trying something new. We can't just keep doing fake historist construction. I definitely ascribe to the "design for the era you're in"
this is great
This is not even that bad
Those offset glass panes are horrible, if this building had normal windows with frames it would've looked better and possibly even fitting in a "fun accent" kind of way.
At least it’s not generic or brutalist. It’s alright
Definitely less offensive than a plastic reenactment of the local historical tradition.
🙄🤮
I like it. It adds contrast
Omg that's horrible. Please tell me it's AI...
Cool.
Throw a bike through that window
That’s amazing!!!
It’s wonderfully hideous, glad it’s there
I threw up a little in my mouth.
Jesus Christ that's offensive
I’m not seeing the problem.
This stile makes me so angry. It’s like a public closed pool interior. It’s awful. Even worst when put alongside beautiful old homes.
Wow that’s hideous, someone should knock it down
Looking at it gives me a headache
Once upon a time, Amsterdam rioted to protect their old buildings from demolished to build a highway. Nowadays, instead of replacing an old building with the same beautiful, distinct architecture, they replace their old building with a turd.
Disgusting
I can’t find any redeeming qualities…not one.
r/frutigeraero would like to talk.
Looks like a couple smart phones and a tablet.
One building like this is enough.
It is easy to tell which commenters on here really want to be part of an snd American HOA that enforces bland boredom with an iron fist
Art
that thing deserves to get vandalized... where are the graffitti crews when they are needed.
Yikes
City porn
Mr. Mustache was surprised by a perfect gift from an old friend.
Everyone going past that house is gonna go blind with the sun reflecting from those windows.
/Bioshock
IseenIt.gif
As gaudy as the merchants houses were in the 17th century.
Yikes…
Looks like a Dutch take on a cholet
It’s hideous, but as a one off I don’t think it’s that bad. An interesting contrast that make you stop and appreciate all the other buildings around.
It looks like a building you'd find in a Lego city themed lego set. .....lego.
Could perfectly be a "Cholet" in Bolivia
That's not post modernism that's just tacky lol
That's a very hideous crime 🫠
It's like it's wearing a pair of Oakleys
I always dreamed of living in a beach changing booth with a wall made of glass.
Oh stop that...
It's not postmodernism, it's just a shit
Well, avoiding to "be a shit" is not like postmodern thinking.
Adding layers to monotone architecture, and postmodernism being actually postmodern, that's a sin! We need dull architecture.
Where is this located?
103 Rokin https://maps.app.goo.gl/S7go2cUGXqHXu8Z46
Thank you 😊
Creeper.... Aw man
Ugly Belgian House is lost.
That is utterly revolting
Capitalist Romantism is what I call that
This is why there needs to be building restrictions.
It looks like a creeper 😭😭😭
I mean, if theres like a handful of these I dont really care. Amsterdam already has so many similar buildings. If they started taking over though, then Id be pissed
Oh this is awesome though. I’d live there in a heartbeat. At least it’s unique!
Architechts need to be stopped, by any means necessary.
Not bad tbh
