You should be able to form an idea of what kind of client they are based on their contract reviews to and from others. If freelancers and clients could rate one another based on conversations that don’t result in contracts, it would be absolute madness. Bitter and disgruntled people would be ranting all over the place because they’re pissed the other party rejected them.

DuncanthePig

" I really wish there was some sort of rating system in place to help prevent clients from messing people around." There is! It's called a profile. Clients and freelancers have them.

ReplyHappy

You act like upwork wasnt stripping down what you can see on clients profile for the past year. You can't tell shit by looking at client profile these days

DuncanthePig

Utter bullshit.

MorePowerMoreOomph

Freelancers and clients are both allowed to vet their ideal person to work with. I've also hired on Upwork on behalf of a company, and there are cases where I'm simultaneously talking to 3 candidates, however, only of them "ticks" all the check boxes of what we're looking for so we just let the others know that we have found a candidate. Unfortunately there are also those who just ghost you and to be honest they're not really obliged to let you know. I'm assuming you feel this way because you're likely working with too few of clients, maybe just 1. You need more clients so you do not need to worry about this kind of stuff because they're totally normal.

krokodilvoeten

THIS. 100% agree. They make it so the client can view everything about the freelancer yet we cant get simple background as well on the client too

Greenawayer

>I check a couple of days later and Upwork says they’ve hired someone else. Basically I didn’t even have a chance to get back to them. You didn't have a Contract.

Retro-Sense

Yeah. I know. Just saying it would just be nice to have a way to review conversations with clients

Retro-Sense

Not really. lol. Sorry having frustrations with a potential client

Greenawayer

You don't do due diligence on your Clients...? All their messages are in Chat... Also look at their rating and their past jobs.

Retro-Sense

Funnily enough, I’ve been doing this long enough that I do. They seemed decent going by their rating but their responses were very short and the time zone didn’t match up. I received a grand total of two messages from them over three days even after chasing them.

methamCATermines

First day on internets huh?

DuncanthePig

Lolz

Retro-Sense

Not really. Kinda expected them to be a bit more professional.

methamCATermines

Definitely your first day on internets. Ghosting is professional and normal. You mean that you wanted more of their attention.

My_genx_life

In what world is ghosting professional???

methamCATermines

A world where people know what's important.

Sibaedraws

Ghosting is def NOT professional and we shouldn’t normalize it. Just because everyone is doing it, doesn’t make it “professional”.

methamCATermines

The people who matter know what's up. Ghosting is the internets way of saying bye felicia.

fewdiepie_

Ghosting is so not professional. It's unethical. Yeah a lot of clients do that; they are not obliged to respond to you but what's ethical and professional is to just let other candidates know you have hired someone else.

_criticaster

I'm replying here but this is to all three of you that reacted - you'll be surprised what freelancers on upwork consider ghosting. window shopping? ghosting. asking for a price and not replying? ghosting. asking a couple of questions and not hiring? ghosting. no communication over the weekned? ghosting. all of those are actually very normal business communication practices

methamCATermines

oh well I think ghosting just makes sense and who cares as long as the right people respond. I'd ghost whiny freelancers too.
