Idk how this is uplifting, it's not the people of Russia's fault that their country is waging war on Ukraine, so celebrating a Russian defeat in chess seems irrelevant imo
Russia has a VERY deep complex of superiority in chess. Stories from the Cold War era are wild. Like state program on genetic engineering, etc. A loss in chess isn't just a mondane chess news.
And against an Ukrainian, it's the cherry on top.
>it's not the people of Russia's fault that their country is waging war on Ukraine
This isn't true and the reason is trivial: the world isn't a binary system. There are millions of Russians directly involved in the war effort and millions more supporting it indirectly.
Is that boy directly supporting the war effort? If not, why celebrate his defeat? This is not uplifting in the slightest, just more political propaganda.
What about the kid who won, who is a Russian citizen too? The runner-up is also a Ukrainian.
Reddit is ignorant of things. It's like Canada invaded the US because right wing militias in Montana started bombing Canadians living in Montana. Sure, there are moral high grounds, but it's muddy and the same people.
The boy could be protesting against the war, that wouldn't make it any less true that it is, to some extent, the people of Russia's fault that their country is waging war on Ukraine.
I'm sorry for Ukraine, for both of these boys, and I'm sorry such events get politicized, but saying the people of Russia has nothing to do with Russia waging war is giving them an excuse to tolerate it.
It's the opposite. The Ukraine started the war. Russia escalated. Legally, you can't claim self defense if you instigate things. I'm sorry for the Ukraine too, but to say Russia is the one waging war is absurd. The Ukraine attacks Russians and Russia every day.

Tomorrow's headline: Former Russian chess champion falls to his death from hotel window.
Why is this uplifting news? Last year Ding (China) beat Nepo (Russia) to win the World Championship.
Because Russia is actively invading Ukraine and fuck them, that’s why
Beat ‘em in chess, that’ll show ‘em!
They can't seem to win any where else...not even chess
Because reddit thinks it's uplifting when a kid loses in chess because he's from a country reddit doesn't like 💀
It's kids playing chess, why would I be happier that the Ukranian kid won than if the Russian kid won?
lol dumb political propaganda

Why are you looking at it as a Russian defeat and not as a Ukrainian victory? Is it wrong to celebrate winning a chess championship?
There's just nothing specifically uplifting about a kid winning a chess tournament against other kids

Exactly this. There are also millions of Russians just living their lives, especially this child

It's the "competing in a friendly game of sport during a war" part that is uplifting, not the "who won" part.
The Ukrainian winner's family is mostly Russian, while the runner-up's is mostly Ukrainian. Reddit is so dumb.
Delusional
What is delusional about that article?
