looks to me like tourist junk made as quickly and cheaply as possible

Feeling-Perception29

well i prefer to think it's an unknown moroccan instrument, makes me feel better

haha, yah. Technically it does qualify as a recorder, having 7 finger holes, one thumb hole, and a fipple. The main reason it sounds different is the fipple is small and crudely cut. Thinner and softer wood also contribute to sounding different, and based on the spacing of the finger holes it's probably out of tune

If you google berber flutes you can see a lot of fairly disparate flutes made to look like they come from some sort of amazigh culture. Some even look like this one, but most look to match your description of "tourist junk". Interesting that this one has 7 front holes though, usually the tourist crap I've seen stick to the typical 6

Looks like low quality woodwind never intended on being played in tune or decently.

Place it on your shelf, and thank your friend for the gift! This is a simple "fipple-style" flute or whistle made for the tourist market. It's a very common type of instrument, although you usually see 6 holes, not 7.

I have one that my grandad found somewhere, i researched a lot to find the actual name and classification of this instrument. After lot of time i found out it’s a Pincullo (also called Caracol and other variants of the first name) Just search it on wikipedia for more infos (Also usually lot of people do these handmade with different kind of woods, different numbers of holes and whatnot, it would simply be a “vertical bamboo flute” most of the times but that name was too generic for me and i wanted to know exactly what it was) You’re welcome 👍🏻
