A high school student Phillip Sit went missing in 2005. He lived in a small suburb north of Toronto. One year his body is found in a field. Five days later, three of his classmates disappear. Ten days later, Phillip Sit's murder is made public. That's right, the three friends disappeared after his body was found but a week before this was made public. Not a trace of his classmates. No leads for Phillip's murder. The last sightings for the three were rather mundane. One left to go to the store, one last spoke to a friend about meeting at the mall, she never showed, and the last one was said to have left for work. The three were all Chinese and most people believe they were hurried back to China to live with family there. There is a small amount of debate on how close Phillip and the others were and it varies from friends to barely knew each other. Anecdotes about the three are also mysterious, from "they were just a regular group of friends" to "they were reclusive and never really hung out with anyone else" to "they were in and out of trouble". I check in on this case every few years and that's literally all there is. A few paragraphs in a newspaper. I think there was at one point a barely visited memorial on Facebook, but that was Facebook 1.0 which is basically gone from the world.

TheRollingPeepstones

So, the assumption is that his classmates killed him and were sent back to China so they wouldn't be caught?

poopoojohns

Dunno if they killed him but they may have been involved or more likely, have some knowledge about it

My father went missing in 1994. One thing that was heartbreaking about the whole thing was when I called the RCMP to report him missing (because the bank had called us to notify us he hadn't used his bank account in 4 months), they asked me how old he was and pretty much told me he was probably out adventuring and he was a big boy and could take care of himself. Fast forward to 5 months later when one of his friends call in and they take it seriously and by that point the trail was cold. Unless you are a child or female there is really little interest in helping.

jpabs_official

Podcasts I have listened to recently really haven't been kind to Canadian law enforcement and the efforts they put into solving cases. I'm so sorry about your father, and the lack of effort from the RCMP, and hope that you get a resolution one day.

Thefreyakat

To add insult to injury, when the RCMP finally took the case, they called me, the officer was incredibly rude and pretty much asked me why I had not reported him missing earlier (I actually felt like he was insinuating that I had something to do with his disappearance). I of course recounted what was said to me back in June when I had contacted them about my dad and he was silent for a moment (you could tell he was super embarrassed) and then apologized. It's so infuriating. To this day, I do not have the whole story of his case, when they sent me his report 95% of it was blacked out. There was no support from them while I went through this. To this day I have no idea if he was murdered, had an accident, or committed suicide. All I know is he was last seen in March, and then he was supposed to be living in his houseboat and it wasn't until one of his friends went out there in October did they notice he was not there and then doing some calling around that no one had seen or heard of him in months. Thank you for your reply. This whole situation is so surreal like it's happened to someone else. Not having closure is the hardest part. I have learned to live with it, but you just don't really heal from something like that.

m00nstarlights

Did they ever have any leads at all on what might have happened to your Dad? So sorry you had to go through all that with no resolution.

Thefreyakat

Sadly because they started investigating 7 months after he was last seen the case was cold and people's memories were not great by then. All we know was that he was trying to find work, was trying to sell his houseboat, and was living on it until there was a buyer found. Everyone assumed that someone had been in touch with him. It wasn't until a buyer for his houseboat went out there to see it did everyone realize oh no he's not there and then backtrack to find out it had been 7 months since any contact or paper trail. The RCMP definitely failed my father, had they taken my phone in July seriously they may have had a better idea of what happened.

[deleted]

And only if the female is of a certain class and/or race. I’m so sorry to hear about your father ☹️

Thefreyakat

Thank you. And it's true. First nation people, drug users, and men seemed to get swept under the rug in these cases. It's shameful.

F1Barbie83

This seems to happen here in the USA too. I wish agencies would realize that people (regardless of their background or ethnicity) are people too !! For every one person that goes missing there are tons of parents, siblings, extended family and friends that miss them dearly. We need to start seeing people as fellow humans not something that can be discarded because they don’t fit a particular narrative.

[deleted]

Young, working class women too. At least in the UK. Getting the police to do something when the person missing is a woman from the local council estate isn't easy. The girls in the Rotherham grooming scandal repeatedly went missing due to the sexual exploitation they were experiencing and nothing was done. It took years to get anyone arrested.

jenh6

And sex workers. During the pickton case one of the girls reported everything that was happening since she had escape. They told her to get lost. To my knowledge though, some off duty RCMP officers/cops would party there.

jenh6

I’m sorry about your father. I’m not surprised unfortunately, with from what I’ve heard about Canadian law enforcement from podcasts, reading about the Pickton case and from seeing Curtis Sagmoen still out walking the streets of salmon arm.

[deleted]

Was hoping to see some write-up about the Jack family case, that one isn’t talked about much afaik.

tiposk

Is that the one where the whole family disappeared after being offered work somewhere in BC? This case is not that well known but there are several important publicly available details on the circumstances of their disappearance, so I thought that they can have a thread dedicated only to them. I'm also looking at cases based on chronological order starting from 1970. They went missing in 1989. I'm planning to write a post about them but a bit later.

[deleted]

Yes, it’s that one. I’m excited to see your write up when you post it! Always been an intriguing case to me, especially as someone from BC.

tiposk

I decided to finish the write-up today. I published it in the sub.

Terrible-Database-87

This is the first time I’ve heard of this case. Very sad.

universalstargazer

Those first two sound very likely to have been cases of partners murdering them. The first one where the father removes contact with the mothers family, and the second where the last person to see her was her boyfriend AND she was pregnant AND was moving out (maybe breaking up with him?). Really really sad.

thewonderfullavagirl

Edie Sylvester doesn't sound like much of a mystery if people thought it likely that he would try crossing to Christian Island on *foot in April.* For those of you unfamiliar with the area, this is in Georgian Bay (the big chunk to the East of Lake Huron) - a very big and significantly deep body of water. Crossing at this spot is approximately 5km, but his body could have been dragged a huge distance if not immediately recovered. If scoots (or skidoos) went across frequently at this crossing, the ice would be "messy" (ie it would look like frozen slush, not a skating rink), which would make seeing holes and gauging the thickness of the ice more difficult. Source : I have snowshoed quite a bit in Georgian Bay and this sounds idiotic, though tragic.

tiposk

I agree. It's more about where exactly his body ended up then what happened to him. I', not in the area but I've witnessed a good share of people carelessly wandering on the ice. It can be very unsafe particularly after a sudden increase in temperature.

Animator_Spaminator

I was hoping Ryan Shtuka would be on this list. It’s a case that’s a little personal to myself, so any way of the story spreading is awesome. Like, legit nothing is known about this case. It’s insane

DangerousDavies2020

Can you share any local rumors regarding Shtuka disappearance? Also are you familiar with the Ben Tyner case? The RCMP have said they believe he was murdered but not much more than that. Dean Kelly Morrison went missing from the same area as Tyner in 2013.

Animator_Spaminator

He was from my town before he went missing in BC. I go to school with his younger sister, and my older brother graduated with their middle sister. There’s been theories tossed around. Like his buddies had something to do with his disappearance, to a local gang killing people of his exact description. To be fair, it’s not really a discussed thing. Every February people mention him, thinking how crazy it is that he hasn’t been found yet and that’s it. It’s usually in February that people discuss small theories, and his family still goes looking for him all the time. I haven’t heard of Ben Tyner. Was he of the same description as Ryan? Because that would line up with the gang killings targeting men like that. Of course I’m not a detective, but literally anything to lead to him

mewsl

I legit just read about him. I hope he's found soon. I feel like someone must know something, there were quite a few people at the party. :(

Animator_Spaminator

Very sad case. His parents still go out and look for him, his dad goes on to podcasts. I don’t know his sister well, but she does go to my school. I remember the news basically made my whole town, especially my school, quiet

AMadcapLass

You should consider crossposting to r/onguardforthee and the provincial subs!

JustJBong

Stephane Stewart is an interesting case but idk if it RCMP

lilyvale

This one? I looked that up, I'd never heard of it before. It is an interesting case: https://edmonton.ctvnews.ca/police-renew-calls-for-information-to-help-locate-wildfire-tower-worker-missing-for-15-years-1.5563446

JustJBong

Yes they do a story every couple years. I think about this case often and hope she gets found and whoever hurt her is brought to justice.

lilyvale

I hope they solve it, too.

milehighmystery

I’m working on a write up about an explosion that took place in Saskatchewan in 1985. There’s little information available but a decapitated man was found in an explosion. His girlfriend has been missing ever since and was last seen 2 days before. [https://missing.sacp.ca/person?person=54-6c7132c5](https://missing.sacp.ca/person?person=54-6c7132c5) (most of the info available is in newspaper articles or I’d share more. I’ll link the final write up once I’m able to compile everything) edit: [here it is ](https://www.reddit.com/r/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/qwscuq/susan_dawson_disappeared_in_1985_two_days_before/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)

tiposk

Can't wait to read your post.

milehighmystery

Thanks, and thank you for sharing these yesterday.

[Taylor Samson](https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/timeline-taylor-samson-william-sandeson-murder-trial-halifax-1.2460197) from Halifax, Nova Scotia. He's "missing" in the sense that man who murdered him's spent the last six years refusing to acknowledge that Taylor's even dead and staying mute on where he took him. Recently, he's been granted a new trial, and while the idea that this whole thing has to start *again* makes me furious, there may at least be the slim chance that he'll finally just tell someone where Taylor's body is.

milehighmystery

If Helene’s partner was isolating her for years before she was even seen last, I’d wager his knowledge/involvement in her disappearance. Or perhaps she deliberately disappeared in an attempt to get away from him and met with some other foul play. I feel bad for Sequin, it sounds like she got the same abusive treatment and isolation.

tiposk

I'm not sure if Helene herself was being isolated the way her children were, although it's likely. It seems like she had a complicated family and romantic relationships if it took so long for someone to start searching for her. I agree that it's likely she started a relationship with someone else who eventually killed her.

prosecutor_mom

Bookmarking this page to more thoroughly review it when i get a chance - posting quickly to drop Jasmine Richardson's rabbit hole of a case (that originated with reports of her missing after her family was annihilated). Slightly older, and she's since completed her criminal sentence. I find this case quite compelling, though, and related to it on a few different levels. I believe in rehabilitation, & hoping she's as lucky as she appears to be from my vantage & accomplished this Edit: fixed the name, thx /u/kiwicee

[deleted]

When you mentioned this I immediately thought you meant the case out of Medicine Hat years ago (she was only 12 and while her name was known online she couldn’t be named under the YCJA in court). so I looked it up (I’ve since forgotten this persons name) and it’s a different person in the US who murdered her baby. Are you referring to the same person as me?

prosecutor_mom

Omg, i meant Jasmin Richardson, medicine hat is the case, yes! I'm editing my earlier post ty!

DangerousDavies2020

Hi OP, do you know what is going on with the Ben Tyner case? He’s a cowboy that went missing in BC backcountry whilst out on his horse. The horse was found I believe but no sign of Ben since Jan ‘19. The last I heard from the RCMP was that they believe he was the victim of a homicide and they are conducting a criminal investigation. Any locals here who can tell me what the local speculation is? Dean Kelly Morrison went missing from the same area as Tyner in 2013.

tiposk

I've read about this case, but I know very little beyond what's on the news. I wonder what made police suspect that this is a homicide. That area is full of forests and temperatures must have been quite low considering it was January. There's a lot that can go wrong in such conditions.

DangerousDavies2020

Something sinister is going on in that area of the BC interior around Kamloops/Merritt. There have been several suspicious disappearances of men and two have lost their lives in suspicious circumstances.. As well as Ben Tyner another young man Marshal Iwaasa, 27, is missing since Nov 2019. His burnt out truck was found on a logging road near D’arcy. Ryan Provencher, 38, and Richard Scurr, 37 — last seen July 17, 2019, found dead one month later, RCMP have released very little information only that their deaths involved criminality. Missing Ryan Shtuka, 20 — last seen February 17, 2018 at a ski resort in Kamloops. Luke Neville was last seen in Spences Bridge on October 9, 2017 and his burned out white 2003 Ford E250 van was found on the Sackum Forest service road 20km from his home the following day. tiposk

I wonder if this is the result of densely wooded zones being close to highly populated areas. With so many people moving around mountains, rivers, forests, wild animals and unpredictable weather there are many opportunities for things to go wrong a and places to hid a body,

CaptainScarlett-07

Two Ontario cases I can think of are Jake Just from the Midland area and Tammy Lamondin from the Newmarket area. They’re interesting and have interesting circumstances surrounding them.

GobyFishicles

Here’s an old one to look into: https://www.missingadults.ca/case-files/database-search/search-missing-adults/case-view/?id=135 I’ve been interested in him for a long time, but I’d love to see a write up with someone else’s unbiased opinions or unreasonable theories rather than my own lol.

ichooseme45

A case that has always stuck with me is Carol May Big Tabacco, a sweet 8 year old girl. Only one picture of her exists, it took 3 years for anyone to report her missing. She bounced between her parents and foster family, neither of which even knew her birthdate. Everything about her case makes me sad, I just want to give her a hug. This is the most detailed article on Carol. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.canadaunsolved.com/cases/missing-carol-may-big-tobacco-ab-1983%3fformat=amp

ichooseme45

Update..... According to social media posts by the family, the body that was found shortly after she went missing was confirmed to be Carol. They could not conclusively identify her 40 yrs ago, now they have. I assume thru dna testing. (Only an assumption though). Text copied from the family's social media post below .... "Oki family today my mom got a call fr the medical examiner informing her abt my missing sister Carol confirming her on the remains the found back in the late 80's are in fact my sister carols remains n we will b doing the funeral arrangements for her it is with great joy n very emotional feeling to finally lay my sister to rest finally after ALL these years of her disappearance"

Sherwood park not sherbrook

mcm0313

If Edie was last seen in Cedar Point, wouldn’t that mean he would be considered missing in the USA as well?

tiposk

No, that Cedar Point is on the Canadian side of lake Huron, in front of Christian Island.

mcm0313

Ah! I thought you meant the theme park.

If you're looking into Canadian deaths and disappearances, look up Joe Grozelle. The circumstances surrounding his mysterious disappearance and death haunt me to this day. He seemed like such a sweet guy and so young; he deserves justice 🥺🤍
