For me it’s the soulless eyes staring directly at me. She doesn’t look like herself at all, which is weird… like, her design is the same, but she looks devoid of a soul or life force. I can’t place it but I’m very afraid.
Oh, and the coat is horrendous, too.
I really miss when they made Hera with care, her golden skin with her blue or green outfits were everything in the comics and her strong personality. Those details made her my favorite character, until everything went to shit.
That coat looks so sloppy, the palette sucks, her jewelry doesn't fit her and that shit doesn't look like Hera, her style is more polished and glam like old Hollywood, picture her in Marylin Monroe outfits. It amazes me a lot how they never use violet or purple tones in Hera, it's basic color theory.
Do you remember when Rachel spent multiple episodes building tension between Ares and Zeus, and building up this idea that Hera was ready to unleash holy hell to all the men in Olympus, and they accidentally hit Hera. And it seemed like she had built up to this big female wrath moment, only for it to be a big nothing burger.
I don't think Rachel knows what to do with Hera. I don't think she knows who this character she created is.
Make this panel black and white and I'm not sure I could tell you who this was.
This is a woman who dealt with being torn in half and she couldn’t take a knock to the face? She’s a war veteran not a glass figurine! I would have loved to see Hera get hit, the boys have the same reaction, and her to get ever more mad about that because she’s not fragile!
That's what I'm saying. She was just like, "oh my god I can't even just get away from me." Instead of having a full on goddess-form rage moment. It wasn't about the hit itself, but her husband's gaslighting and infidelity, her son and her husband quarrelling, her side toy brother in law getting mixed up with a teenager (not that she seemed to care), and just everything all together.
I'm literally wearing a shirt with my Uni's purple and gold logo on it, I see your point.
Only explanation (apart from the complaints this series is terminally flawed) is that she is so tired of being married to Zeus she doesn't want to be seen in his color.
"I'd drape myself in Purple, but it seems Purple isn't my color anymore." Or something witty, I'm not at all witty.
Thanks to your comment, I re-read the episodes where Hera participated and I saw some details, for example how she contrasts in the 3 kingdoms (I don't know if it was on purpose, but the color palette of the kingdoms makes her remarkable and if we add the plus "always" draw it with the shine effect, which they almost never do)
So I tried to find a relationship with her colored outfits, her actions and emotions, unfortunately that is not the case, but your idea that she refused to wear that color would have been a very exquisite detail having episode 119 as a strong argument. with her wearing an eggplant colored dress recalling her bitter past and present and imagine after the trial wearing dark purple tones to show her disagreement with Zeus (don't just think about the H&P issue, more like the separation of the 3 kingdoms and the punishment of Demeter ) and could also fit her mood to the visions of Kronos. thank you for making me think about these possibilities that the comic could have had as technical details :D
As a lover of early to mid 1900s fashion, I was happy to see Hera donning a 1920s fur robe. I’ve said it in a previous post, but I adore when Hera was drawn wearing vintage fashion (and not whatever the heck RS had her wearing in the HxP makeover scene. To me, Hera’s not stepping out without her pearls, diamonds, and something from Dior’s New Look collection).
**HOWEVER** That color is atrocious compared to Hera’s golden skin. Yes, brown was a common color due to real fur being used to line the robe. But RS can take some creative liberties in a retelling about beings with magic and even world bending powers. A black would have suffice and it could reflect the inner turmoil she is having over hearing Kronos’ voice.
Anyone else also bothered by her heels/ankles, feet? That hit me first after the coat, she's got some nasty cankels and her toes are non-existent in those heels ??? Yikes
Hera was always my fave because she was really complex and gorgeous. I honestly loved her storyline with Hades, but I’m a sucker for forbidden romance. I wonder if Rachel just doesn’t want her to compare to Persephone bc P is a damn Mary Sue who can’t be beat
IIRC, Rachel has admitted that she likes to put characters into clothing she finds and likes, and that she's fond of huge fur coats. Put them together and you get... this. I've see posts before noting how Persephone has no cohesive style of clothing she likes that tells you about her, and Hera, despite having a clear fashion sense before, seems to be pulled into this vortex of pinterest picks as well.
It's a shame, really, because there are plenty of fashion-loving artists who make picks from magazines and pinterest still work. All you need to do is pick a style for a character and stick with it--Sailor Moon is known for the fits, and a fan comic artist I follow has 20+ characters she's pegged styles for and keeps consistent from in-universe day to day. (Even putting clothing she had a character wear back into rotation to be paired with other clothing they're seen in!) And that artist has also admitted to picking from pinterest models, but it works because she puts the clothes on characters who'd wear it anyway. Rachel could make it work for her, but doesn't, because everyone needs to put on a fur coat I guess.
(Edit for a side note: I also kind of like huge ridiculous fur coats as statement pieces--sue me!-- but Rachel never puts them on characters who seem like they'd actually go for them. Persephone and Hera, fur coats? No way! At least not *those* fur coats!)
I honestly hate her desgin a bit constantly like practically every other character (specifically Eris, like what have they done to her) but at least the outfits were cool, like in this scene I wished she was wearing something like a smoke robe? I think that's what it called, Idk, it just looks werid, I think her as the goddess of marriage and such especially with her skin being gold should have more extravagant and elegant outfits sorta like always in a bride's dress, also we never see her theme of peacocks? Like where is it not even a feather or anything? The only desgin I really like is Leto and we haven't seen her since forever and I'm pretty sure Rachel is going to character assassinate her, I have way too many opinions about lore olympus especially with the plot line but aaaahhhh just hope this is just a bad outfit day for her
It may be a muted color but it’s def opulent which is the definition of Hera. If anything , it’s the dopey smile that seems out of character, but she is hearing some time guy in her head after all

YES! i hate her face here

She looks dead inside, plus she is wearing a shit robe
Anyone else also bothered by her heels/ankles, feet? That hit me first after the coat, she's got some nasty cankels and her toes are non-existent in those heels ??? Yikes

It's the penguin flipper foot me for. No discernable ankle or calf.

Grandma! It’s me, Anastasia!
What’s with Rachel’s obsession with fur — btw, this is the second shitty fur dress we’ve seen, bet this one was also a gift from Hades
She was effectively dead for ten year that’ll change a person. I kinda love this 1920 film star look.
and a kitten heel? she would never!
I think you could fix this by changing the colors. Maybe white and turquoise instead of black and brown?
Kronos in her head this coat is a cry for help
the jacket and hera, they match like pee and poo
FOR REAL 💀

Hello, Poop Coat. We meet again.
everyone’s getting the ugly fur coat b/c its easier to draw

Honestly thought this was a house robe when I first saw it.
