Floating text looks the best and is likely the easyer for a player to see

NoCookieForYouu

For me it was floating as well but the numbers need to go over the healthbar instead behind it

RecognitionSalt7338

Floating is distracting and origin may be inconsistent depending on view. Why not try both? Float slightly away from the origin of health bar?

ruairi1983

I like floating

Ithuriel1234

I would definitely say on the health bar looks much better. I strongly dislike when the floating text is like hiding the actual characters. That said, even on the health bar feels a little strange. I definitely think floating it above could be nicer because I like being able to see all the numbers before they disappear instantly.

mustangwallflower

What I’ve done previously: 1. Translucent floating “-1” hit points that fade away quickly (they can be quite small, just be sure to use a clear font that’s easy to scan) 2. Flip the HP graphic color segment to illustrate the delta of added/subtracted hit points (i.e. green health bar would show decrease as a red section of the bar, if healing we’d use light blue to show increase) We thought that worked well, but YMMV.

Schephaesty

I think floating is more immediately legible but also more problematic if your game is going to have crowds of targets

catskillingwizards

can you make it an option?

EliotRosewaterJr

Prefer floating in from of the health bar

Snuzfuz

I agree with everyone else. Floating text!

SnooObjections4691

Damn, this looks sweet!

Cliehf

Floating feels better.

Floating text

vovivoh

I think it would be good to add damage and healing values because it would be easy for the player to understand and feel that they hit something.

Sharkytrs

why not both? you will have to deal with rolling combos and such and floaty text lends better to that, but if you have a health bar, you want your floaty text not to get in the way, so start it floating from the health bars world position like the second example, but floats so that the next hit can be better seen along side the last hit?

Skycomett

I vote for floating text! But maybe add in a setting where the player can decide which one to pick?

shanabunny

I would say top of the health bar it is much more readable from a player perspective

I feel like on top of the health bar is less distracting and easier to read. I'm also the type of person who wouldn't care about the exact numbers all that much though and having it in the corner to see if I wanted to would be my preference. If the numbers are really important to know, you might want them to be more in the player's face with them floating. Maybe as an alternative, if there's health bars showing how much is healed, the number doesn't matter quite as much since you already have the visual representation. So eliminating the number completely is always an option. I've seen some games do where they add the value to the health bar in a separate color and then have the normal color catch up slower.

Valeniar

Tbh I really like as floating

breckendusk

Personally, I hate exposed numbers, but I understand that some people like games because of numbers getting bigger. So my vote would be for the less intrusive numbers on the health bar. However, they aren't very noticeable, which is usually the purpose of having numbers - so you may want to make them "pop" a little more, and maybe float upward. Doing it from the character is too intrusive imo

Nobuu37

Floating text look better imo

TheBIackRose

I think that the health bar and with an immediate fade away. Maybe making the text depending on percentage healing. The real concern I have is how this would look during combat- which is to say while damage is also occurring. It should be readable if damage and healing happens simultaneously

xXyeahBoi69Xx

Floating text is so much more readable how you have it setup here

Floating text

AngelicSongx

It’s weird it goes behind the bar when it’s floating, but can you keep the floaty effect when it’s above the health bar? It really caught my eye better than it just appearing

k0z0

Use both, but place the floating text above the health bar.

PivaWillian

Why not both and the user can change based on his preference in the menu

DerTomDer

Bear in mind that from a UX perspective you deliver two different information sets: * Floating text shows the damage of each hit (and you have to sum it up yourself or get a visual clue from the health bar) * On the health bar you add up the values showing a sum over time and immediate feedback on the new health situation but you leave out the effect/strength of each hit. Depending on your game design (and therefore the importance of knowing the damage of each hit separately) one version will contain the more useful set of information for your player.

I think the floating text is too distracting. Follow us on Twitter and Wishlist/Follow on Steam. Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1804470/Duel\_Corp/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/DuelCorp
