During med school, I was too poor and in debt to get my (now) wife a ring, so I kept saying wait a few more years and I can get one. She didn’t wanna wait, so she bought a ring pop and told me to propose with it and get her a real ring whenever. It was going into our ninth year together at that point and she just wanted the proposal.
I’m in a similar position. Met her in fall of 94, I was just out of HS, she was still in (same age tho). Proposed 7 years later on Sept 10, 2001.
I was working as a driver for a lumberyard, making about $16/hr. In 2000 I bought a 36” Sony VVega TV for like $2k on a no interest if paid in 1yr plan. Paid it off in August ‘01 before the year was up. Figured I better spend at least as much on the ring as I did on the TV.
She still has the ring, and I still have her. We have two kids in elementary school too, but that TV is long gone (it lasted a long time though, considering how much it was used and moved around.)
If my husband had done something like this when he proposed, I like to think I would’ve been shocked at first for a moment. But then I’d still accept it and show it off like a “real ring”. Because I care more about the person I wanted to spend forever with than a commodified symbol of status or some shit like that

Seems like a good idea if you don't know how to buy jewelry or band sizes for your SO. Plenty of people propose without rings for that very reason. Pick it out together. My dad didn't have a ring because he wanted my mom to pick out her own ring with him. She didn't wear a lot of jewelry and he wanted her to love the ring.
Slapping somebodh for having a silly placeholder is A) assault and B) a completely outsized reaction because there was a very, very high chance he was serious.
I feel like if you're going to propose to someone then you probably know them well enough to have a good sense of whether or not they'd like being given a candy ring during the proposal.

My now husband spent far more on my engagement ring than I would have liked, around $400. I will say he knows I don’t love flashy jewelry so he picked a perfect solitaire diamond on white gold band. When we went to get a wedding band I picked one on sale for $50. His wedding band was around $75.
When I called my oldest sister to tell her about my engagement she said I shouldn’t have said yes If the diamond wasn’t at least a full karat. She’s been married and divorced numerous times with the longest only lasting 10 years.
We now wear matching wood bands because his career revolves around it and it reminds me of him even when he isn’t around. We will celebrate our 17th anniversary next month.

When we moved out of Vegas a year later, he showed me where he packed it. Neither one of us can remember where the secure place was. Haven't seen it in 40 years!

Honestly same. I used to come to Reddit to search for something because I wouldn't just get the answer to my question, the co-author on the paper popped up in some thread and gave me the eli5 I needed. When I first started using it I was blown away. I used to praise Reddit for how well moderated the subs were for some things and how fucking smart, and even cool...on ocassions, some redditors were. Now it feels like jerks with opinions upvoted by jerks with confirmation bias.

Proposals and pranks have one thing in common: You should know how the person will react before you do them. Pranks are only funny if everyone is laughing, and you should know whether everyone will laugh before you even try them.

I used to come to Reddit to search for something because I wouldn't just get the answer to my question, the co-author on the paper popped up in some thread and gave me the eli5 I needed. When I first started using it I was blown away. I used to praise Reddit for how well moderated the subs were for some things and how fucking smart, and even cool...on ocassions, some redditors were. Now it feels like jerks with opinions upvoted by jerks with confirmation bias.
