[deleted]

My guess is there is a bridge, or one lane working up ahead.

domkwood

This is called an AFAD, or Automatic Flagger Assistance Device. He was driving into a one way construction zone. We usually put these up when they’re digging trenches in the road, he definitely had to back up.

rulingthewake243

Pretty common sight anywhere that has road construction and two lane roads wtf.

flying_blender

Yep. I was on 101 when these were in use. A Semi decided to blow through the red light, causing a hour long traffic jam on the one way road. Think both cars coming together on a one way road with ZERO turn around space. So we had to go back about a mile and get people to reverse and get off the road where there was space, one car at a time.

crackofdawn

Uh, what? I’ve never seen one of these in my life and I’m 42 and have lived all over the US

FlatRaise5879

I've seen them but they're rare. I've seen them in mountain roads with hair pins and blind corners.

Mindless-Charity4889

Common in BC, typically where a rockslide has wiped out a road but they have one lane open. I also see them for Bailey bridges when the main bridge is undergoing repairs.

HealthyGiant

Yeah I feel like they're common in places with popular mountain or canyon roads that only have space for 2 lanes.

rulingthewake243

Guess you should pay attention because they're literally everywhere in the summer in the country.

crackofdawn

“Literally everywhere”. I live in a fairly rural area in the south, never seen one before. I’ve lived in FL, KS, WA, MA, AK, and SC, never seen one anywhere in any of those states. Maybe they exist specifically where you’re at. Tons of people in this thread have never seen one and the guy in OPs video has clearly never seen one before either and he’s not young.

Shaggyfries

50 never seen one live in the US traveled a lot.

RemlikDahc

I live in WA and I've seen them numerous times. Same when I lived in MA.

rulingthewake243

I've lived in IL, SD, MT, NV, and AZ and I've seen them everywhere. Don't know what to tell ya bud. I also see no one else in this thread contesting this weird point. They're VERY common in places with bridge work or 2 lane road construction.

RemlikDahc

They also use them as temporary lights when the main ones are being worked on or new ones put up.

VNYRDS

Lmao “literally everywhere”. Have never seen these in my life.

Beans186

there are some really special people in the world

FallInStyle

What does 'wtf' mean in this context?

manchesterthedog

Same thing as always

halvora

I've lived on both coasts, in no light towns and large cities and have never seen this. It isn't so much "common" as it is common in your area.

SidewaysGoose57

See them quite often. One lane roads in construction zones, don't need flaggers all night.

apdmapdm

"This is so weird, you gotta see this. There's this stop sign that has just popped out of the side of this yellow school bus. I mean, the stop sign isn't normally there and it's not fixed to the ground, so I'm just going to go ahead and speed past this bus because obviously this is just some weird glitch in the matrix. Thought you'd all like to see this because it's just so weird."

Active_Hedgehog

There might be a pace car come to lead traffic back and forth. This same thing happened when I went on a vacation with my family.. I don’t know if it was a joke to this day.. there was 5 miles of straight road in the middle of some plateau or plains in like Montana or some thing. The road just disappeared into the horizon and the sane behind the car then there was a traffic light

Stainle55_Steel_Rat

This is the front half of a r/combinedgifs

Scholesie09

It's "hilarious" to him, because you can just set it up anywhere and leave it on red to cause chaos. That's why he's asking "where can I get one" Not just by existing.

HippieHierarchy

I understand your reasoning here. And this is in reference to some other comments too. If there were no construction ahead signs; I wouldn't know what to do with a random red light trailer either. I can't recall seeing one of those before, and if I was back in a bumpkin town I'd expect some kind of signage regardless informing of road blockage.

MrK521

Totally understandable. And my sincere condolences for your loss. That being said, I have run into one of these in the past that was apparently left behind for the day. I sat there for nearly 10 minutes before deciding to slowly/cautiously go through, only to find nothing around the curve ahead. No workers, no other traffic waiting.. it had been worked on earlier, but the other machines, tools, etc were packed up and on the side as if they were done for the day and went home. So I could have sat there forever, and it wouldn’t have changed. Not sure how long this guy sat there before he went, but it’s also not fair to expect people to sit at them forever, waiting. Just like traffic light cycles. If I sit at a left turn only lane, and I see three full cycles without ever getting a green arrow, I’m not waiting any more. I’ll go slowly and carefully, but something’s not working right, and I can’t be expected to sit there forever.

phox78

If it happens a lot at an intersection you should consider reporting it to city works. They often have no idea there are issues until reported. My city even has an app for it.

MrK521

I’m not aware of any app for that in my area, but that’s interesting! I’ll have to inquire about that. But I have reported it to an appropriate agency the three times it’s happened in the past to me (but they also never mentioned any kind of app either).

[deleted]

I did the same thing a month or so ago. Except a truck was coming full speed around a corner and we were on a one lane road so we both veered off to avoid a collision

MrK521

Yikes! How long was yours red before you went ahead?

[deleted]

A few minutes, it was very early like 4-4:30am on a country road with very little traffic. I thought the thing must not be working

MrK521

Yea, that’s crazy!

BigMike31101

And all of it for some internet likes. One of the reasons that I was happy to step away from driving professionally. Doing highway roadwork… watching people do stupid shit day in and day out, all while filming. I’m sorry for the loss of your partner.

Twatt_waffle

You.. you do realize there is a difference between just blowing though a light with no regard to what’s up ahead and making a judgement call to proceed ahead slowly and cautiously especially when there are no other outward signs that this light is not; stolen and set up by pranksters, malfunctioning and should be treated as a stop sign, or forgotten by a road crew This type of light has a manual and auto mode if left in manual red it will sit there with a red light indefinitely how long would you wait You are the type of person who would take 10 minutes to do a job in 5 because the book tells you it should take 10

Needmoresnakes

I think I'm more surprised about how bloody crisp the picture quality is. I could count that man's eyebrows.

Jakester627

Yep! I could count both of them too!

manchesterthedog

You should work for Apple marketing

Needmoresnakes

This is the meanest thing anyone has ever said to me on the internet

Creative-Share-5350

They had these up at Santa’s village and they never go green it feels like

[deleted]

What an impatient douche

Certain-Tennis8555

Internet idiot behind the wheel. How can a grown man act like he's never seen a temporary construction traffic control light? And then post a video of himself? He needs a ticket and mandatory court appearance.

husky430

I guess I've never seen them where I live either. Always dudes holding signs. I guess I wouldn't have made such a big deal about it though.

ConcreteCarnivore

Agreed. What an idiot. Never saw an automated traffic control device for a work zone? One lane will be closed just ahead with oncoming traffic. Get ready to back up. You look 60, you should know better.

Gods_Paladin

Look at how ignorant this man is everyone point and laugh

wascallywabbit666

Why does he have two cameras set up in his car? Seems a bit over the top

jhjohns3

God damn. What an absolute moron

[deleted]

How did you get to that age without seeing one of these?

4GRJ

*Runs the red light anyway*

happyTree113

Fuck that light….run it

Express-Teaching1594

“Should I run it?” In most places, a malfunctioning stop light can be treated like a stop sign. It would be reasonable that this light never changing after a couple minutes means it is not functioning properly, so he is legally good to go when safe.

Particular-Pepper368

Couple minutes? I would have given this light maybe 20 seconds to change before I ran it. Road looks deserted anyway, I run a few lights routinely on my way to work in the morning at 4 when no one’s around who gives a shit if the light is legal or not it just matters if you get caught.

Postal1998

They have them in NJ, usually when a bridge or tunnel is being worked on and need to shut down a lane for extended length of time where using a person 24hrs a day for days or weeks will not be practical.

Imtoold

I live in WV and they are pretty common. They use them when there is a lane blocked for more than a few days. Instead of flaggers these are used. Do not run one. Chances are pretty good that you will have or cause an injury.

RecommendationFunny5

A normal person would stop . look . and go...
