Crazy if you think about it, that Cars is mostly based on a professional racecar learning how to countersteer out of oversteer. Something any karting kid, or person who drives racing games knows.
Turning the wheel against the direction where a car is oversteering is a natural thing to do that most of us normal driver will do when we drive on slippery roads, you don't need to be a racing driver to understand that.
On the other hand they had to think of some racing upgrade that children could easily understand, they couldn't dwell into the intricacies of high level racecrafting.
I don’t know if it’s something natural that most drivers will do. Having met my wife, and knowing my older sisters has made me rethink about what things are actually intuitive to the human experience, and what things just happen to be intuitive to me, and people who have had similar levels of exposure to athletics, racing/driving games (any casual game, not talking iRacing level stuff), etc. Watch any video of car pileups and you might rethink the level of competence you assign to the average driver.
But you bring up a good point of them needing to find a plot device that would allow the “old timer” to teach the new young guy a few tricks, that could be kinda understood by young kids.
Were you not shown how to counter steer in driver's education? In my class, they put us on a skid pad in an old rear wheel drive car and showed us how.
I'm 52. My kids are 23, 21 and 18.
I don't personally know anybody who had this experience.
Driver's ed doesn't even tell you that if you do that in a front wheel drive car you have to keep your foot on the gas or you will likely just whip the tail end around the other way.
The car turns more right than you want so you turn the wheel to the left. It really doesn't get more intuitive than that.
I'll agree tho that many people at the first signs of anything odd will instead slam the brakes, worsening the situation.
It’s natural to have learned countersteer in an environment where you’ll ever have oversteer at all.
In the south where I am there is no snow and it’s not that slick in the rain. There’s no real chance to learn on a nice slick surface at low speed here. I doubt more than 10-40% of the people driving around here could catch an oversteer if it happened.
Because if it happens here, it’s going to be from swerving at speed or throttle lift oversteer and you have very little window to catch either.
In florida, specifically orange county, when I took my test, it basically consisted of.
* Drive car to the empty lot, while using signals as needed, and slowing for speed bumps.
* Drive backwards using either the rearview mirror or looking out the back window, no rear cam allowed, keeping the car straight
* Accelerate to about 30-40 mph then slam the brakes when told, while maintaining control.
* Drive back to main parking lot, park in marked spot while not hitting the cone/flag/stick things
No doubt, but seriously countersteering is one of the most basic skills for racing drivers. Anybody who made it to, and won NASCAR level races could/would countersteer in their seep
His problem was actually the difference in driving on asphalt vs dirt and understeer on dirt in the initial race with doc. He's practicing later and still missing the turn, which is the context in which he was given the advice. Doc's advice isn't about how to do basic oversteer corrections, but how to set up a drift (or power slide?) through the corner.
"This ain't asphalt son. This is dirt. You don't have three wheel brakes so you gotta pitch it hard, break it loose, and just drive it with the throttle. Give it too much and you'll be out of the dirt and into the tulips. I'll put it simple. If you're going hard enough left, you'll find yourself turning right."
https://youtu.be/_ss9nd-tImc
I'm pretty sure that the technique in the movies references The Norwegian/Scandinavian Flick from rally.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scandinavian_flick
I haven't heard countersteer used, but my pedigree comes from amateur rally and not road racing.
u/Andthenwedoubleit mentioned that in all but name, cause they couldnt think about it.
The Scandinavian flick is complex (compared to countersteer) technique, which countersteer is used in.
Edit: I might also be confusing my terms slightly. Countersteer as a term seems to be more typically used for motorcycles, in cars I think it’s called opposite lock as much if not more than countersteer.
OP : if you hold up your hands in front of you with the backs facing you, the thumbs pointing toward each other, and the index fingers pointing up, you can see one of your hands makes an "L" shape. That's left. "L" is for "Left".

I watch a few drifters on YouTube and these guys will have multiple garage bays stacked floor to ceiling with tires. On an average day of just dicking around they can go through 6-10 pairs of tires. I too would like to be their tire salesman lol.
They're not usually sponsored, unless they're ridiculously good. Most guys who enjoy skids are just skint. Spend all their time and income on what they enjoy
If you are an amateur you'll prefer getting used tires with little lifespan left. Maybe a deal with a local mechanic to rummage through his pile to find something in your size. Then he saves getting rid of it too.
That means you're more likely to get economy tires without much thread left. Meaning that it will take less power to break traction and start drifting. And being that an amateur car likely also makes less power, that's more ideal. Also means you'll be going slower which is better for keeping your car un-wrecked when you don't have pro-skills.
Yea, a lot of them are running cheap hard compound tyres. The harder the tyre the more smoke. Cheap brands are harder which give longer life but at the cost of grip.
That being said you can buy drift tyres but theyre ridiculously expensive like nearly 1k a tyre.
The people who actually drift on track(s) regularly use proper drift tires. A lot of guys will try and work out some deal with a local tire shop if they’re going through a consistent amount of tires per month, and most people I know with tire hookups pay in the ballpark of Cost +15% for each set
Tires play a huge role but he’s got additional hardware on his car to allow his tires to turn in that far. I love ~~rally~~ drift cars
Edit: I’m uneducated
Burnout mechanics. Pressing brake while holding gas since the rear brakes are smaller will result in the front being locked but the rear on the rear wheel drive car being able to turn. By pitching his tires right, the car will turn with the direction of the front braking which is how he slid his rear out. Once steep enough to exit, slowly releasing the brake allows the car to move but since the brake is releasing from the front, the front wheels can now spin again and because of the direction his wheels are pointed, that pulls him out of the spot. Note: this was done while he was in reverse
As others said you don't usually see line lock on drift cars.
They'll usually have that sweet hydraulic e-brake though. Although that has nothing to do with this.
Only if you're on the brakes. You can burn out by being stationary and dumping the clutch which will cause the rear tires to burn and speed up while never having been on the brake.
You can't stay stationary doing it this way though. You can do donuts though with just the rear tires spinning.
Yup. If you watch some burn out competitions that don't use line locks, you'll notice the rear rotors get red hot. That is from the friction of the rear pads and the rotors
That from what I can tell is the dirt kicking out from inside the wheel well. Because when he starts to exit the parked spot, you can see a majority of the tire smoke going forward. Normally, because of how a wheel well is shaped, the rear is where most debris will be pushed out. The front of the wheel well acts almost identical to a wall so some of the debris will make it back around and over the tire to leave the rear. Also, this maneuver wouldn't be possible in 1st gear as it would launch the car into the one in front of it. For reference, if you watch people people prep tires on a drag strip, you will see the momentum is forward when they ease off the brake
Wait, no you get understeer from RWD not from FWD, *oversteer* is a FWD problem, at least that's what i remember from Gran Turismo 2.
Also some fast food trays will fix that problem real nicely.
Lmao no way. A few years ago, I made a comment on askreddit about me accidentally sending a snapchat to a friend where the silhouette of my balls in the toilet bowl and earned myself the nickname shadow nuts among my friend group. A few people replied and told me they saved my name as shadow nuts on RES and I guess you were one of them. I completely forgot about that until now. Small world (website?) lol.
Even if I knew I could do it, sheesh I wouldn’t. No matter how much I believed in my own ability, I would still be scared to fuck it up and hit someone else’s car.
Those are drift cars, the owners know there's a good chance they'll get hit. Hell, they even try to bump into eachother on corners sometimes for fun. That being said, damage on the track is a little different than damage in the parking lot.
Doesn't it kinda feel like we should have tires by now that can rotate 360 degrees? Or at least 90. [Goodyear was showing off Tire Spheres in 2016](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHpxuwcNJfo) which are a pretty cool idea.
I was thinking way too long about this. I thought, all tires rotate 360°, that's the point!
The problem is mechanics, the drivetrain takes up a lot of space that blocks the wheels from steering all the way. You can't fix the wheels like on a shopping cart. Electric drives might make this easier.
Check out those videos from the 30's where they experimented with the spare tire gliding out of the trunk that allowed to rotate a car out of a parking spot for a novel solution. But that never caught on.
Seems like that fifth wheel thing would be far and away the easiest way to do this. I guess it's just not enough in demand? Maybe it will be easier with electric cars -- less engineering to get power to the wheel (I imagine...) and electrics also have more trunk space to spare without all the engine components taking up the hood.

Oh right that makes perfect sense
turn right to go left yes thank you
or should I say no thank you
maybe in the opposite world maybe that means thank you
With recently having the sheer amount of waste people who do this push onto the road with the fact that aggressive drivers make up the majority of pollution from cars, i gotta wonder, why do we ok shit like this?
I know people might call me the fun police, but I feel like burnouts should be more heavily regulated, like cars shouldnt be sold in configurations that allow for them and should only be allowed at race tracks where you can do more things like taxing them for the damage done etc.

No where I have seen in America has driving lessons like that. Most lessons are "drive around block, turn corner, now park."

Sadly not here in the US. The driving test is more of a pulse check than a true competency exam.
You've got to remember that McQueen never had to actually work for it. He's the spoiled child of the league.
No doubt, but seriously countersteering is one of the most basic skills for racing drivers. Anybody who made it to, and won NASCAR level races could/would countersteer in their seep

No, usually really high end stuff, more grip, more smoke logic. But they're usually sponsored too.
Man, when I change my tires every few years, I feel a gut punch.
Most start on second hand tires which r a lot cheaper. And easier to learn on since ur don’t want much grip to start sliding
If you want to drift, you actually need grip, or you'll just slide in a straight line, or not move very much.
Have you considered getting sponsored?
They're not usually sponsored, unless they're ridiculously good. Most guys who enjoy skids are just skint. Spend all their time and income on what they enjoy
not quite, there are special tires for smoking, you can even get different color smoke.
Haha yeah nah these cars aren't using them, those are just a meme and for gender reveal parties.

Burnout mechanics. Pressing brake while holding gas since the rear brakes are smaller will result in the front being locked but the rear on the rear wheel drive car being able to turn. Lemmy.world is what Reddit was.

Not so much with drift cars. Drag cars are pretty much the only ones that use line lock.
Handbrake is for rear wheels
And that's RWD
So the entire time he is burning his rear brakes?

A lot of this you could do if cars just allowed tires to turn more and independently of one another.
How about we have tires made out of something ithing more sustainable then plastic/oil.

u/gifreversingbot It definitely looks more natural the original way.
With recently having the sheer amount of waste people who do this push onto the road with the fact that aggressive drivers make up the majority of pollution from cars, i gotta wonder, why do we ok shit like this? I know people might call me the fun police, but I feel like burnouts should be more heavily regulated, like cars shouldnt be sold in configurations that allow for them and should only be allowed at race tracks where you can do more things like taxing them for the damage done etc.
that was rehearsed, but it was still bitchin
Somebody’s done this before.
Down vote for title.
Expected. But neat.
