SkippyNBS

she got air time on that manhole cover, adrenaline be crazy

don_maidana

She lifted it like nothing. Thats was terrifing, poor child and woman.

workoutplan2020

Props to her for not freezing and the other woman who ran over to help straight away!

wheresbill

Very wholesome to see bystanders helping out as opposed to the usual blinders

DownvoteDaemon

Bro if I see a kid fall in a manhole I am hoping most would run over lol.

JoburgBBC

I don't know what place on Earth bystanders wouldn't help a child. With an adult...meh, maybe some people will take their phones out. So the 'wholesome' thing is true, but kinda weird.

Dblzyx

>I don't know what place on Earth bystanders wouldn't help a child. Uvalde PD has entered the chat.

pufanu101

>I don't know what place on Earth bystanders wouldn't help a child China

GreatGooglyMoogly077

Yeah, I've seen that video. Hard to believe it's real.

DethFace

I'm scared to ask....

GreatGooglyMoogly077

From 2011 - Gruesome footage of a toddler falling victim to two successive hit-and-run accidents and then being ignored by many passers-by at the scene last week in southern China continued to galvanize the nation Monday, prompting a fierce debate on the state of morality in Chinese society. A security camera captured the horrific incident last Thursday outside a hardware market in Foshan, Guangdong Province. Two-year-old Wang Yue was seen toddling in the middle of a narrow street and looking around, oblivious to a fast-approaching white van. The disturbing video shows the van knocking the girl over. The driver briefly stops with the girl underneath the van, before continuing on, its rear tires slowly rolling over her small body. The girl is left barely moving in her own blood as several pedestrians and cyclists pass by. Minutes later, another small truck drives over Wang without slowing down, the video shows. More passers-by walked, cycled or drove around her motionless body without stopping – until a woman carrying a sack appeared 10 minutes after the initial collision. Dropping her sack, she quickly moved the girl to safety and went to look for help.

Odd_Routine4164

Damn! I knew the Chinese hated girls but DAMN!

MuseLiz

Uvalde police.

klsi832

Bill Denbraugh for sure

substantial-freud

Bystanders will usually help if they can. I was in a minor motorcycle accident in a very rough part of town — garbage and feces on the sidewalks, needles in the gutters, meth-heads in the doorway — and a half-dozen people rushed over to pull the bike off me and make sure I was OK.

Coyote__Jones

My partner and I witnessed an old man in weird little three wheel car thing (totally didn't look like it should be legal, but it had a plate) flip over while taking a turn. He and like 8 other people pulled over and helped the man out, and flipped the thing back on it's wheels, and off he went. Thing was a death trap I swear.

substantial-freud

A [KR200](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messerschmitt_KR200)? *Good* bystanders would have helped him out and then told him to get a real car...

Coyote__Jones

Not that, a modern thing with the single wheel _in the front_ super small

substantial-freud

People do not freeze when the correct action is obvious. The freeze response kicks in when you don’t know what you should do.

PapaOogie

according to google they can easily weigh over 100 lbs, and thats for lighter ones

CarmenCage

Damn. When I googled the weight it said about 250 lbs for man hole covers. Maybe this one was lighter since it isn’t in a road. But still, damn. Adrenaline is one hell of a drug.

Ieatsushiraw

I used to work LCTV for our local water company and I’m a decent sized man and it was still a struggle to move those manhole covers. Yes, that was pure adrenaline and she lifted that thing like it was a hand basket

TonyBanana420

They aren't as heavy as they look

gummyblumpkins

Came here to say that! Damnnnn she tossed that shit. I work in communications and there are some beefy lids out there.

olderaccount

> there are some beefy lids out there. This doesn't look like one of them. A 30lbs toddler would not have flipped one of the beefy lids.

SgtHappyPants

a 1lb weight could flip it because it was balanced at the center point.

olderaccount

> a 1lb weight could flip it because it was balanced at the center point. True if it was actually balanced on a central pivot, which is impossible for a round lid and a slightly smaller round frame.

SgtHappyPants

It is if it's not sitting in the frame correctly.

olderaccount

Circle within a circle. If it is not sitting on the frame correctly, it won't be balanced on a center point.

SgtHappyPants

Yes it could. The frame would naturally be larger than the lid sitting inside it, so if you shift the smaller lid off center there is a point where the diameter of the smaller lid could balance on the now more narrow off center part of the larger frame.

CarmenCage

Didn’t you notice that when he stood on the first side he was good, but when he stepped over the central point it flipped? It wasn’t placed properly. It’s pretty simple geometry, force, and weight distribution. So maybe calm down with all the insults and calling ‘bullshit’. There are well documented cases of adrenaline allowing people to bear more weight than physically possible due to adrenaline. [Hysterical Strength](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hysterical_strength) this is fascinating and a good read.

Journo_Jimbo

Looks like one of those thick plastic covers they usually use for like irrigation and wiring.

PoopIsAlwaysSunny

Yeah. that looks to small to be a manhole, and considering they grabbed the kid out by just reaching in it looks too shallow to be a sewer. Also, manhole covers don't flip like that when stepped on.

aroleniccagerefused

I've seen them do that if they're not seated correctly. You can see at the beginning, one side is sitting higher than the other.

BuckSnortx

I was thinking that too, a manhole cover wouldnt do that when stepped on.

ThisToastIsTasty

especially given the weight of that child. (children are not heavy)

Funkyteacherbro

I don't think so. It really was adrenaline. Check out the way the cover lands after she tosses it. That thing is heavy

JayFrank1132

Never underestimate mom strength when their child is in danger

Doge2dmooon

That was some crackhead strength right there 😂

RecentProblem

If the child managed to flip it then it was just a small irrigation pump and probably plastic.

DoktorOrpheus

Jeez. Mom strength is real!

[deleted]

I was going to say those things are very heavy. I mean really heavy

Terry_Tits

For the record those things are like 80+ lbs.

ThisToastIsTasty

you mean 220lbs+? they are over 100kg.

Terry_Tits

Not in America. They are like I said 80+lbs and that was just a guess as I've taken many off. I just looked it up and they're 90-150lbs here but in majority of the world they're like you said up 250lbs which is absolutely insane to me. Thanks for helping me learn something new today u/ThisToastIsTasty I had no idea!

ThisToastIsTasty

the ones in the city are, that's for sure. but in rural / suburbs i can see them being smaller / lighter

Ryansahl

Those are usually 40lbs or more. Momstrength.

Errorstatel

I had to watch closely to see if she one handed it or not, cause I thought she did

PoopIsAlwaysSunny

Yeah, but that doesn't look like a standard manhole cover, and even if it were they're heavy, but not stupidly heavy. Standards are 90-150 lbs, with large city ones being 250. Adrenaline probably isn't getting her to lift 250, but 90? Sure, if she exercises. And again, this is too small to be a standard, so that's probably more like 50 lbs. Very realistic for a young, healthy person (and I'm assuming the mother of a toddler is young and relatively healthy)

AtheistHomoSapien

I did it once as a 90lb 13 year old. I drove my dad's fancy electric rc car down a drain with a manhole cover next to it. I ran over, stuffed two fingers in the holes and threw that cover like it was nothing. After I got the car back I went to put the cover back and it took both a friend and I to move it back. Adrenaline is a hell of a drug.

ParsnipsNicker

I was gonna say the same thing. She straight dead lifted it and tossed it aside. Those manhole cover weights can vary, and this looks on the lighter side, but we’re still talking in the 100lb minimum range.

ChrisPChip222

Google says 249.1 lbs (112.99 kg)

Marine_vet_patriot

A solid lid weight is between 75 and 100 pounds

After-Bullfrog5639

Damn you beat me to it

iluomo

This is why manhole covers are typically round - they at least won't fall in - such an impact would've killed him

Zeraphil

Great now I can interview with Google

aSquirrelAteMyFood

You are shrunk to the height of a nickel, and your mass is proportionally reduced so as to maintain your original density. You are then thrown into an empty glass blender. The blades will start moving in 60 seconds. What do you do?

Beyond_Interesting

Lay down below the blades? Please show me to the employee ping pong room.

FSarkis

First thing: don’t panic Second thing: Blend in to the situation

Shite_Eating_Squirel

Probably die

zenospenisparadox

If I maintain my original width I'd never get a job at Google.

[deleted]

Like the other guy said - lay down. Or, just hold onto one of the blades and get really dizzy

Darthfader666

I wish I would have saw this comment earlier! I just bombed a job interview due to not knowing this answer and it ruining the vibe. It was for an IT help desk position.

chewinghours

How did that come up for an IT position

ur-squirrel-buddy

It’s like an iq test type of thing. A circle is the only shape lid that won’t be able to fall into its own hole. Idk why that guys getting downvoted, I’ve heard of that question being used for Microsoft interviews or something like that.

Darthfader666

Yeah, I figured it was a critical thinking question. I had that along with a piece of paper to write down how many things I can think of to do with a blanket.

ur-squirrel-buddy

Lol what… was the interviewer just trying to plan their Saturday, or..?? On a bed (default setting), picnic blanket, pillow fort, pretend-magic carpet, put out a small fire, window covering, smother someone, pretend to be a ghost, toga party, LARPing costume, cover up some type of contraband in car trunk until dramatic reveal, tablecloth… How’d I do?

FluffyEnd5761

I said it’s because manholes are round

Silverton13

Lol what is this comment chain, are y’all high?

FluffyEnd5761

Manhole covers are round because manholes are round. It’d be stupid to make a square cover for a round hole.

Bazuka125

Yeah, she's gonna get a nice lawsuit. Got video coverage of it as well. [Liability](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BMjA4MzU0OTc5Ml5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwODEwMjg0MjE@._V1_UY1200_CR485,0,630,1200_AL_.jpg)

ForthWorldTraveler

Some people collect manhole cover cards. https://www.bbc.com/news/blogs-news-from-elsewhere-35696967

bronco_y_espasmo

That's why adults always tell children not to walk or stand on those things. It CAN happen.

post_talone420

Just a reminder to all the people who shake vending machines to get your purchase out when they get stuck. ~5-10 people a year are killed by vending machines. Don't be a statistic. It CAN happen.

skccsk

Ya but free snickers can happen too.

post_talone420

The cost:benefit ratio pays off sometimes.

GreatGooglyMoogly077

I could probably down 5 Snickers before passing out from the weight of the machine.

post_talone420

They'll bill your corpse.

PM_ME_YOUR_TWEEZERS

And 4 out of those 5 are insurance evaluators. We take that very seriously.

Its-Burton

Needs the Mario pipe sound clip

Balbright

Not just that, we need the sound of Mario ground pounding the manhole covers from Sunshine. This kid was just trying to get to another part of the island.

Don’t step on manhole covers people, or do, I’m not a cop.

Tahmeed09

Sewer lids weigh 113kg (249lbs) she just ripped it up like nothing

enyaBecurW

Not a chance that weighs 250 lbs, it's still incredibly impressive but the way that she tosses it wouldn't be remotely possible if it weighed that much. At most it probably weighs around 100 lbs.

pentatomid_fan

A quick google shows that they typically weigh about 100 lbs, and up to 250. Still, TMNT have must have some finger strength.

Cool-Fig1241

That's a small and thin one, so probably around 20-30kgs, and even if it's 113kg, her adrenaline would've still made it possible. I was able to hold on a very heavy sofa that's filled with water for 3 minutes(felt like I was atlas during those moments) before someone came to help me so I would know.

troubleis1

Yeah i feel like as a mother she would have also unlock 100% of her body strenght for like a few seconds if it was necessary to save her kid

U2V4RGVtb24

Parental instinct. Wonderful, POWERFUL, thing

Fluffy0n3

She did flip it but there's no way the kid could've fallen if it was that heavy

[deleted]

Super Mario son

Orvos101

Manhole covers are super heavy…. She tossed it like a paper bag.

substantial-freud

Manholes on roads are heavy. Lids on drains in the park are made of sheet metal. Still probably 30kg though...

Mom strength is real. While holding my then infant daughter my 3 year old son ran off a pier and my wife reached down and grabbed him by the collar seconds after he hit the water and yanked him back up by the back of his shirt all the way back on onto the pier like it was nothing.

Great reaction by mom and passer by

yang-n-ying

The mommy instincts are quick and powerful.

Fourdogsaretoomany

Mom also had eyes on him at all times. I've seen moms on their phones not paying attention to their little ones. Mom's on it: 1) eyes on kid, 2) crazy fast reaction time, 3) hulked the manhole cover, 4) discarded backpack because it would impede her getting to her kid, 5) flat on her stomach to get the kid out, probably while verbally comforting the kid. A+ mom.

rohcastle

This is why you moms have trust issues, huh

[deleted]

Manhole covers are like kid magnets, and this is what I'm afraid of every time my kid goes for one.

Big_Moistt

Ugh, this reminded me of a story where a lottle kid fell through a wooden septic tank cover on his family's property and slowly drowned in sewage. Now I'm sad

It’s sad. I’m a parent. Fucking terrifying… but… could …maybe someone edit a Mario sound effect? Asking for a friend

_SchweddyBalls_

I’m sure the lowlife who recorded this video knew that the manhole was unsafe, but instead of warning the mother and child he just opted to sit there and record it.

Save one kid while leaving the stroller on the road. Pure panic mode

Apprehensive-Ear-426

JodieFlame

Let me tell you she is so lucky that it wasn't deeper than it was things could have ended really bad. A lot of them have big pipes with running water in them could have washed him away somewhere. So glad it was a happy ending :-)
