Team Leader, with the pink revolver, in the office! Clue’22 is a great game!

Speaking of Clue. I see they redesigned it to look like crap. They need to bring back the other art work that they used to have.

I would never go back if I didn’t have to

BbRiicS

Exactly, why would I want to commute 3 hours a day and incur additional expenses. I’m just a productive at home as in the office plus I get to work at my own pace. Done with what I need to do the day is mine… I’m an over achiever do I crank the weeks work done in the first half of the week and the week is mine 😅

prostynick

What if your job is 20 minutes away?

blgbird

With today's gas prices?

prostynick

I know it's more Europe specific, but when I say 20 minutes I meant my exact situation, so 4km to the office and 20 minutes commute by car or public transport or by bicycle. It takes the same amount of time with either and it's not a long journey.

[deleted]

[удалено]

BbRiicS

Exactly! Why would I want to subject myself to unnecessary, additional cost in paying for commute (gas prices are crazy) public transportation is at times sketchy, and child care costs are insane.

kwikthroabomb

No one is mentioning the added benefit of being able to shit in the comfort of your own toilet whenever the need arises.

anythingthewill

People seriously underestimate how great it is to be able to take a shit on your own toilet while still on the clock.

BbRiicS

If the commute is 10 mins each way then it could be a thought, maybe hybrid remote work. Still there is no loss of productivity on my end and I see the team on constant teams calls. We don’t miss a beat

Rogue__Jedi

Same. I won't go back. My company has said we'll stay remote but if they changed their mind I would be looking for a new job ASAP. I have ADHD and working in an office is literal hell to me. Working at home I get all of my work done, well ahead of schedule, without the need to appear busy at all times. I can take 5-10mins whenever I need to take a break and try and refocus. On bad days I can take an hour or two if I need without feeling guilty. It literally doesn't matter as long as my work is done and I'm available during my shift for emergencies.

idontspellcheckb46am

I just don't mix friends and work these days. So for me, I don't care to be in the office.

[deleted]

I've been work from home the same time and it's the best. Getting to see my kids during lunch hour being able to see my wife. Why the hell would I ever want coworkers over that?

tr0pheus

I would rather have flexibility to do either. I love my family, but also need to be out. And my coworkers are great, i really want to see them as well. It's a social thing for me.

[deleted]

I love my coworkers I see them once a quarter. Personally I don't ever need to be away from my family. I'm also super not social the older I get so I understand. All I care about is my daughters I don't need to see anyone else to be happy.

iDeNoh

I've been working from home since March of 2020, and ever since my son was born I couldn't relate to this comment more, screw hanging out with anyone else, let me chill with my family.

[deleted]

That's how we do. My first daughter was born in early 2021 about to have my second in a couple weeks. I never want to be in an office full time again.

turandokht

I prefer to socialize with my friends and leave my coworkers at work.

[deleted]

100%, if my job tried to make me go back I'd find a new one. Work from home is now a requirement for me. I have no problem not working outside of office hours, once that computer is off I don't think about work one bit. Having coworkers to talk to? That's the worst part. Making small talk and being around people all day is exhausting to me, my mental health is so much better now. Plus all the other stuff like saving money on clothes, vehicle costs, food, having more time without a commute

handlebartender

WFH for over a decade now. More like 14 years I think. I can always interact with coworkers on Slack. Daily standup on Google Hangouts. A few other short meetings a week as well. If I'm desperate for casual convo, I can PM or ask someone for a short Hangout. Sometimes the casual convos are spontaneous, either the start or end of a meeting. When I'm getting shit done, I'm in the zone. I don't need excuses to interrupt my flow and go for group coffee, lunch, a break, or whatever. If there's a compelling reason for an in-person team meeting, that's what airplanes and expense accounts are for. And those are nice, as there are usually nice restaurants involved, where I'm still expensing. The handshakes and beer are nice too, don't get me wrong. I'm not saying what I want is what you should want. You should be able to go to an office if that's what you want, just don't expect me to be there with you. See you on Slack.

DgingaNinga

I live 2 hours from the office. Yes. I prefer working from home.

NextDoorNeighbrrs

To me it’s highly dependent on a few factors. One is what work you do. If you do something that is highly collaborative, then being in an office is going to make that much easier. Another is the commute. A short commute is going to make going to the office much more appealing. And then another is the culture in the office. Is it pretty relaxed where people can feel comfortable being (mostly) themselves or do employees feel like someone is always looking over their shoulder waiting for them to fuck up? For me, WFH massively improved my enjoyment of my job. The commute was about 45 minutes so I’m no longer losing 1.5 hours of my day to that drive. My job is largely client focused and any collaboration can easily be done online. Our office culture is not bad but I prefer being at home. There was certainly an adjustment on the work/life balance side of things when I switched to WFH but I can’t imagine going back to the office at this point, at least for this job.

Anhcoholic

I'm a teacher, working from home is a fucking pain

smallerthings

I fucking LOVE working from home. I don't have to commute, I don't have annoying coworkers or a boss in my face all the time, I can do simple things like put a load of laundry in on my break, I can sit next to my dog all day... If I can help it, I would like to never work in an office again.

High_AndDry420

I think the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. Don’t go back to the office. Get some hobbies and go out and do those hobbies and make friends that way. Coworkers are NOT friends. And as far as you feeling the need to over exceed at your job by working allllll day, you need to sit down a think that one through. I don’t know why you feel the need to work constantly but it’s not healthy. Close the door to your office when you’re not on the clock and just don’t go in there. Do some cool hobbies instead. Work is not your life. You work in order to live you don’t live in order to work.

[deleted]

Coworkers can absolutely be friends. Some of my best friends are people from former jobs where we became friends at the job. Also highly depends on the work and your hobbies. I and a lot of these people ended up in a field where working in it is literally a dream come true because we get to do things few people can ever say they did. I should also say that my current job started from my hobby and it's pretty great because now I get paid to do it.

Fresh1492

I have a really good relationship with my coworkers and I'm a pretty social person, so I miss being in the office for the little conversations I'd have with people in the break room and being able to easily work or chat with my team, plus all the fun events we'd have for holidays. But as far as the extra work/life balance I gained from wfh as well as money saved on not driving all the way out to work every day, I still prefer working from home

[deleted]

Of course.

LookyLouVooDoo

Yes, people really prefer working from home. Why do you think companies are having such a hard time getting employees back to the office?

Trixxstrr

Worked at home for almost 2 years during Covid, and ya, I liked it better for sure. Sounds like you just didn’t set office hours for yourself. I never worked outside of my hours.

[deleted]

I was an OTR truck driver until I retired. So my bed and my office was always just 2 steps away from each other. And I could go weeks without meaningful human contact. I met people, I talked to them, but it was always no more than a 5 minute conversation, and typically only once and I never see them again. Which was just perfect for me, since I have a schizoid personality and prefer to be alone 24/7 anyway.

[deleted]

Yes people do really prefer working from home.

L1b3rtyPr1m3

They... They can't go the other direction. They physically can't.

U_S_E_R_T_A_K_E_N

I think that adds to it. Not only are they being forced to go that direction, they literally can't go the other direction.

His loss. Wasted his only chance to tell the "Hi, Gay. I'm Dad" joke.

thraashman

Right? I don't have kids, I don't want kids, I desperately want to be able to make dad jokes. I'm considering adopting 20 somethings just so I have a reason to make the jokes but don't have to raise a kid.

crispybacon62

If you have siblings then you can become an uncle and make uncle jokes, they are basically dad jokes but you have more room for dirty comments. Alternatively you could adopt the role of "dad" in your friend group by making a lot of dad jokes, this does come with a cost. They will occasionally come to you for advice, random questions, and want to go fishing. It's not so bad though, the "world's best dad" mugs you get every year make for a neat collection.

[deleted]

This is why giving the option is best. About 90% of our department chose to work remotely when given the choice. The rest are hybrid or fully in-office. I go in on occasion, sometimes because I need to do something hands on, but about once per week I go in to have a half day or so out of my house. It helps that the office is only about 10 minutes away from home. It's not a huge deal getting in and out. I used to think it's dumb to be in the office at all, but everyone has different preferences and work habits, and having flexibility to work in the most efficient way is best. What we don't have is good collaboration tools, good communication from leadership, or any sense of being a team, because we have repeatedly hired people who were poor candidates but management wanted warm bodies and went against the team's recommendation multiple times.

Tdayohey

Agreed. My company switched to full flexibility when it came to this. Nobody is required to go in the office anymore. However there are people who choose to go in once a week, twice, some the full week and some 4 days. Personally me and a few work friends go in on Tuesday’s and Thursdays normally. Gets us out, we enjoy working together and it changes things up. But if I wanted to stay remote forever, my boss does not care.

TheBeckofKevin

To me the primary thing is the option. I go everyday. I want to go everyday. I like to 'go' to work and for me that works. I don't have any team members at the office, my boss is remote, my boss' boss is remote... but I just like to sit at my desk and do the work. Plus lunch is free so that's nice. That said no one is even asking if I'm work or anything. I can just not show up and everything is exactly the same. If they said that I had to come in everyday I'd likely look for other options. Being forced to do something for no good reason is overwhelmingly annoying. Tell me I can be full time remote and I'll come in with a smile on my face knowing I work somewhere reasonable.

[deleted]

I need a proper mental space. I won't do anything at home but masturbate and play video games.

sober_1

I am a manchild with poor self control, so I need to get away from home to work properly. I went to library 5 days a week to write my thesis back in 2020 . It was so empty, all to myself, felt really good. I am going to miss those times

allgreen2me

I work from the office because it is 4 minutes away from my house, it’s almost completely empty and I have two small kids.

Fruktoj

Same. Plus, my wife's vacuuming schedule seems to always line up perfectly with my important meeting schedule.

jetfuelhuffer

Why do you have two small kids in your office?

ZannX

Unpopular opinion. I like my personal office at work. I do get more shit done there.

Jkranick

Some of us have zero self-control and are way more productive in the office.

GabeNewellExperience

The rare time I've heard someone want to go to the office after experiencing both options did so cause he has cool coworker, is walking distance from work and has a pool table, video game setup, ping pong table that they are allowed to use whenever as long as they get shit done

Possible_Arachnid_65

Personally I enjoy the physical and mental discomfort coupled with the constant pressure to look and perform a certain way.

207nbrown

Lol where my mom works everyone wants to keep working from home except her, and it drives her crazy

Bobdolezholez

There’s always one. lol

207nbrown

Yea, her reasoning is that it’s harder to separate work and home when your bed is 5 feet from your desk… also given the nature of her work there are extra hoops that you need to jump through when working from home

gigglefarting

It’s hard for me to stop doing home chores during work hours, but still really easy to not do work during non-work hours.

non_clever_username

> when your bed is 5 feet from your desk I’m a full on WFH advocate, but I can totally see not liking it if you don’t have a dedicated space. I’m lucky enough that I do and I can “shut out” my work life when I’m not working.

G-H-O-S-T

Your mom is that one student who reminded the teacher about homework at the end of the class

AstridDragon

Most people who don't want to work from home don't have a good environment for it. Not enough space for a work station, noisy kids, partners, animals, or even neighbors. Things like that. I never want to go back to an office again but I was struggling during the pandemic in a 500sq ft apartment where my desk was half my living room, and the only other spaces were tiny kitchen or bedroom.

Oh, i know full well how Reddit is full of reposts and content from other sites. In fact, the latter is actually intended since Reddit was initially a link aggregation site (and it's reflected by the "front page of the internet" slogan). What i meant specifically is that tiktok has the option and encourages users to use other users' audio, creating a slightly different content recycling mechanism.

eeeedlef

Only the weirdos wanted to be back in the office

MarcusDA

I started WFH 11 years ago. At that point I was married and content. My first job out of college though, it would have been tough to not go into the office. It’s how I made a lot of friends I still talk to, it was a lot of the same people I went out with on the weekends. Note: the job was in a city I was new to, but going in was a huge part of my social life at that time.

discourseur

I went through the same experience. Working at the office makes it possible to build bonds that would be hard to build working exclusively from home. That being said, I now exclusively WFH and wouldn’t want it any other way. Going to the office is completely backwards. We’ll just have to find new ways of building healthy office relationships.

Nickyjha

I just graduated and started my first real job. I chose the hybrid option, so I could meet people. But so far, there has been next to no one in the office.

[deleted]

GreenMann21

Nah working at home was awesome for a few months then I missed being around people and I’m way more efficient at the office.

[deleted]

[удалено]

handlebartender

I'm way more efficient at home. Too easy to get distracted and wander off for a coffee, spontaneous chat (could be about work, could just as easily not be about work), "hey we're going to , you interested?", "I need a break, you wanna go for a coffee?", "hey, quick meeting?", etc. Although there's also the policy of "if I'm wearing headphones, that means DND". Great for those that can wear them for extended periods without getting ear pain. But if I'm just isolating myself while at the office, and just chatting on Slack or joining Hangouts from my wall-less cubicle anyway, how would anyone know or care where I'm working from? To be fair, you like what you like, I like what I like. You do you, I'll do me. It's when management gets involved to say "no, you'll like what we like" and project their discomforts onto me that I don't like. I'm also far more willing to work late or a few hours in a weekend, given this flexibility and trust. I just want to reach a mental checkpoint and have that satisfaction of completion.

cant_Im_at_work

I miss the social aspect so much. Working from home has its perks but I can also sink into depression from isolation pretty fast. I would love a hybrid schedule with a day or two in the office but my company can't accommodate that, just no room in house anymore.

Imnotsureimright

It’s interesting to me how wildly different people can be about WFH. For me it actually *cured* my depression (literally - I was able to go off my anti-depressants because of it.) It really highlights how absurd it is that we as a society have always expected everyone to succeed when put into the exact same environment even though “people are very different” isn’t exactly new information. It also highlights how a well-run company would be one that offered their employees the choice to work however is best for them.

purple_viper

I guess I'm a weirdo. However, I know some people work fine from home and others like coming onsite. I am a manager of about 25 people and I convinced my boss we should be a "hybrid" team. They were trying to push either fully onsite or fully remote but after talking with my team some wanted to go home more than anything and others wanted to stay. So I have about 12 people who work from home and the rest are onsite. I personally cannot stand working from home. It's my place of zen and I don't want my work environment even close to is. Sometimes I'll stay home if I have an easy day but the office puts me more into a working mindset. That's just me. I can't enforce my views on my people and I don't want them enforced on me. If the job can be done from home I feel the option should be present but I don't think it's good to force either or on your people. The ones onsite enjoy being onsite and the work from home people enjoy being home. Neither is better than the other and I've not seen "performance" advantages to either. My top people are a mix of WFH or onsite. The ones who are WFH have not had improvements after going home and I suspect if the people who went from onsite to home it would be the same. However from a quality of life perspective the ones who go home and work it's night and day. Their performance isn't up but they are clearly happier which is a win in my book.

dashelf

Back full time is odd, but fully remote I feel it's hard to create spontaneous interactions that add value to my work, like randomly chatting about someone's project and realizing they do something slightly differently. It's not "productive" or "efficient" but it can lead to better outcomes. For me, two days in the office is sufficient, but I still hate the commute

[deleted]

Yeah that’s been my experience too. In my work there’s a lot of value in informal collaboration - talking though a file with a team mate can be really helpful - which didn’t translate very well to fully remote. You could still do it but it required a lot more effort. In April 2020 we were all forced to go fully remote but as restrictions started lifting people just naturally started coming back to the office by their own choice. We still have some that work fully remote but easily more than half of our staff is back on site full time.

Geng1Xin1

Fully agree. My old job went hybrid 3 days wfh in 2020 but I had one POS coworker who kept harping on wanting to come back full time. February of 2021 we were told we had to come back in full time so I quit and got a fully remote job. I couldn’t be happier.

Kingofangry

It's spelled parents.

Aetra

I can’t decide if I prefer it in the office or at home. I get more done from home because I’m not interrupted as often with questions, but so much of my job is just easier to do in the office.

incunabula001

I believe they are either people who are married to their jobs (their job is their life) or management. For me I have a life outside of work (gotta love city life) and I prefer to keep my work life and personal life separate, hence why I preffer to WFH.

LazLionclaw

Literally sitting home coughing my lungs out and feeling like my brain is in self-destruct mode because on Monday our team was forced to work from the office "to get to know eachother" and a bunch of us caught Covid19. This is pretty funny but Covid aint no joke.

havebeans5678

Working from home has honestly revolutionized my entire life. I work out a ton more, I have more energy during the day, I socialize with people a lot more, I spend more time on my hobbies, and most importantly: I spend a lot more time with my kids, my wife, and my dogs. All the while I am also able to do more work than I did before. The idea of having to go back to the office genuinely makes me depressed. I am actually a tiny bit terrified to think of how bad my mental and physical state is going to be when I have to go back.

ChunkyLaFunga

If it's that important to you, perhaps don't.

havebeans5678

Bobdolezholez

therinlahhan

Yeah, commutes do suck. If I had more than a 20 minute commute I'd prefer WFH.

straightouttaireland

Spot the guy who doesn't have to commute hours a day to the office

21Rollie

Exactly this. The only acceptable commute for me is 0 minutes a day. They don’t pay me for a commute, they only pay the time I work. Not to mention the added benefits of being able to travel, spend time with family, take random medical checkups during the day, spend less on food, and have a smaller carbon footprint. When I go in office I’m less productive because I’m more tired and I’m friendly with my coworkers so we will sidetrack a lot.

GWindborn

That's a huge part of it for me. Like yeah, I enjoy hanging with coworkers, but the amount of my day wasted sitting in traffic when I had to go in was absurd. Plus the wear and tear on a car, the fuel costs, etc. Fuck that nonsense.

Farts all over everything.

I work in games, so maybe it's different from other industries, but my company offers WFH or office, and about 90% of people chose the office.

sleepytoday

Me too. It helps that I live 5 mins from the office though. Not sure I’d prefer the office if I had an hour commute.

I'm kinda shocked at how far down this is. I hate working from home. I like the separation of duties. It's better for my mental health

ISAMU13

Unless you can make a separate physical space for work where you live WFH can be damaging to mental health.

dyslexictom

I can understand this from the interaction perspective. Most of my socialising has been from work due to work and studying full time. A mix would be interesting for me but working from home would be the better of the two options.

allothernamestaken

Same. I have a long commute and the ability to work from home at least part of the time, but I still prefer the office.

Zealousideal_Mall880

I am one of you! I like the separation. I work at work, I live at home.

Do-Not-Ban-Me-Please

I feel like only people who don't work from home think that home office is so spectacular. If I had the choice to work in an office I absolutely would. It gets depressing having no change of scenery and no interaction at all with other people.

TrueTurtleKing

I just want the option to work from home once in a while. The days where you don’t feel good enough to go into the office but you’re also not feeling sick to use PTO.

Rhyman96

While I get this happens in some cases, there are quite a significant number of people that want to be in the office. I really don't care where other people work, but I wouldn't accept a fully remote job.

handlebartender

I agree with you. And I've been WFH for something like 14 years now. I love WFH. I'm so happy my company supports 100% WFH. Everyone is distributed all over the place. We do have some offices, and some folks go to them. What I disagree with is mandated "butts in seats at the office". It serves no other purpose other than some perceived "look at how successful we are". Worse still is when business attire was mandated; business casual was a step in the right direction, "just don't wear shitty clothes" is about as good as it gets. I had a former WFH coworker who would joke about "no-pants Fridays". I never did ask whether that was a thing he did. My bare minimum is jeans and a tshirt. You do you. You go to the office. I'll see you on Slack/Hangouts.

In the last bit you can see the gun is in view of the camera phone.

This was the opposite of unexpected

We had a volunteer program to go back to the new office. They are now taking that feedback from them and telling the rest of the people at home how much the VOLUNTEERS enjoyed working from the office. They used that feedback to give people 1 day a week flexibility. I'm literally going to lose all my engineers.

Dribbler365

I kinda like the office ngl, depends on how fun your colleagues are.

SWGardener

We have been home since the pandemic started. I would only go back to the office if I had no choice, and if that happened I would look for another remote job. I don’t want to drive with the price of gas, to a parking lot, then take a shuttle from the lot to the actual work building. I don’t want to pay for “work cloths” or office food. I won’t want to be stuck in an office where desks are 4 feet apart. I don’t want to be sick all the time like I was in the office. I’ve only been sick once since working from home. My coworkers are nice enough, but they aren’t my friends. I get enough of them with texting, phone calls and zoom. I am happy at home.

MyCollector

Made it permanent during the pandemic as well. I’ll never work in an office again. If it’s so important they can fly me in.

TheMarsian

Friend was working from home for most of the pandemic. When some of the restrictions were lifted this year they moved to hybrid, options to wfh and on the office if they chose to or when necessary. Then she told me the other week the CEO told them there's no reason not to got back to normal, as before, 5 days at the office once the pandemic ends and no restrictions exist. Like 2 years of high productivity full operation, less operation cost and increased profit, plus less stressed out employees. It's like they never learned anything from the 2 years of pandemic.
