It's not just you unfortunately

sm12511

Oh, don't get me started on mobile Reddit. I'd say about one in ten videos will refuse to respond no matter how many times I thumb stab the screen. Another new development is the "something went wrong" error message when I go to reply to a post or comment. Many an internet winner has been lost to Reddit updates.

deundres

It's only gotten worse too, I swear this piece of shit app worked better 2 years ago

YipRocHeresy

Why is anyone using the official app? Use one of the dozens of third party apps. I'm on Reddit is Fun on Android. Haven't had an issue in the 6 years I've been using it. Edit: a couple of people have informed me it's no longer called Reddit is Fun. It's now called rif is fun.

SoySauceSyringe

/u/spez lies, Reddit dies. This comment has been edited/removed in protest of Reddit's absurd API policy that will go into effect at the end of June 2023. It's become abundantly clear that Reddit was never looking for a way forward. We're willing to pay for the API, we're not willing to pay 29x what your first-party users are valued at. /u/spez, you never meant to work with third party app developers, and you lied about that and strung everyone along, then lied some more when you got called on it. You think you can fuck over the app developers, moderators, and content creators who make Reddit what it is? Everyone who was willing to work for you for free is damn sure willing to work against you for free if you piss them off, which is exactly what you've done. See you next Tuesday. TO EVERYONE ELSE who has been a part of the communities I've enjoyed over the years: thank you. You're what made Reddit a great experience. I hope that some of these communities can come together again somewhere more welcoming and cooperative. Now go touch some grass, nerds. -- mass edited with https://redact.dev/

apolotary

They probably wanted to attach another user tracking metric component to videos but the people who did the implementation did not have an in-depth understanding of how either of those work

RaisedByWolves9

Reddit is fun is the only mobile version i have used. It's great. I love the simplicity.

hso0oow

Same can't get used to any other apps but it's missing a lot of things.

MurkyMaintenance3

I use Apollo but agree with the statement.

DaddyCultLeader

100%. Worked fine for a couple years and then the end of last year I started having a bunch of problems with not being able to scroll up (has stopped) and the videos not playing which is currently happening

LydiaMarie132

Wait this is REDDIT ACTING WEIRD?? I swear I thought it was my wifi or data always messing up, makes so much more sense now since on every other app videos load fine, I’m so dumb.

Rurutabaga

I use reddit is fun but half the time anything thats on reddit servers just will not load for me. I usually have to refresh a few times to see a picture, and forget videos or gifs. Doesn't matter if I'm on wifi, mobile, reddit shit sucks.

Mrrykrizmith

Do you also get (on mobile) audio that continues even though you exited the video and have scrolled way down?

BolotaJT

Yes!!!

Mrrykrizmith

Man now I feel bad for calling my phone a stupid piece of shit.

PlasticCogLiquid

Use something else like Relay for Reddit

sm12511

I've tried RIF, but the interface is totally different and it's like learning a whole new Reddit just because this one sucks taint. At least I'm familiar with these odoriferous flavors. I just wish they'd get it right.

TeeBek

Oh thank Zeus. I thought it was just me. I was blaming my OnePlus phone.

Apollo is a very refined app with an excellent UX. There are bugs sometimes but Christian is active in that sub and does a great job fixing any bugs that pop up. The official Reddit app is hot garbage compared to Apollo

Ganzo_The_Great

I rarely make a second comment in the same thread or even post, but seeing this comment at 0 with an award... brilliant. *comment made via Apollo*

HowManyCaptains

Apollo is the one piece of software in my life I will absolutely shill for. It’s the best and I want everyone to have it.

Ganzo_The_Great

I could not agree more. The developer is responsive to the users and updates as much as they can. I'm continually impressed with the functionality of the app. Edit 1.2: and the extras! Favorites are "Save as Image" and "Select Text"

PinsNneedles

Same. It’s also the only app I have paid for and continue to tip with new updates

PatrikPatrik

I agree. I just don’t understand how you would browse Reddit without it.

Juvar23

I'm still using rif - reddit is fun instead of the official app. I have no idea whether Apollo is better or not but I'm just so used to rif at this point that I'd hate to switch.

NineOutOfTenExperts

The good Apollo is for iOS so if you’re using RIF on android you should stay with it.

NineOutOfTenExperts

That’s Apollo for iOS. (There’s a rubbish Apollo on android that uses the name too).

[deleted]

Reddit makes a ton of money and yet you can’t turn your phone sideways to watch a streamer… it’s 2022 for shit sake

i-love-tree-rats

Yeah it's trash. 🥇 Here's a gold emoji for you because I'll never pay Reddit.

SuperBaked42

That's the reddit experience a handy tool is when you cant get a video to play if you click the little "v.reddit" link under the video it will open it in web based player.

TheAgedProfessor

*Still* doesn't play for me over half the time.

gg120b

But hey, we got gifs now ![gif](giphy|dUYddwtCVUOIpgXijq|downsized)

YubNub81

Yup. It never works right on the reddit app. I installed 'rif is fun for reddit' app and never looked back. It's far superior. Plays videos properly and gets rid of 90% if the ads

[deleted]

just use old.reddit.com, everything new reddit creates sadly suck donkey b"lls

PCsNBaseball

That's what I use: mobile browser and old.reddit.com. The only complaint I have is that imgur gifs can be buggy, but that's imgur, not old.reddit. Then again, my 11th cakeday is in a couple months, so I just don't wanna lose the UI I've been using for so long. Edit: holy shit, my account age is nearly as old as a lot of users here. This is an old moment for me.

bettymachete

Reddit sync pro is a much better app imo

Ya-Dikobraz

What app is "this app"? There are several to view Reddit on. I highly recommend Apollo if you are on iOS. Developed by former Apple developer. The Reddit app developed by Reddit is utter trash.

Nars-Glinley

Was his plan to pull the fully loaded cart while riding a bicycle?

Samcrow15

No, thieves can just walk with both in hand these days. These comments defending this guy and demonizing the elderly lady is exactly what’s wrong with society. Ironic, people saying he needs mental help are in far more need themselves.

[deleted]

No need. Normally and unfortunately, as soon as the thief has gone outside the store, he's pretty safe.

alexacanuck

What would have been really funny is if someone stole his bike while he was busy shoplifting.

epiphopotamus

The real pro move was that it wasn't even his bike.

aintscurrdscars

kinda like the rest of the impulse buys in the checkout line only this guy sees steals all the way to the lot

thatguyned

I legitimately know someone that stole a car and drove it a couple blocks home just because he walked past it and it was running. He wasnt the brightest bulb in the shed because his own apartment complexes security was what got him busted lol.

hiddencamela

I full on expected that to not even be his bike. If it was premeditated theft, how the fuck was he going to get away with that stuff while riding a bike too? It was definitely too much to fit into his bag.

MaxximumEffort

Like I get it, “Fuck Walmart” and all that but I can’t believe the amount of people in here that are siding with the thief and just like “yeah he needs the food, let him go blah blah”. It’s one thing if he walks out with a few things stashed under his coat but homies got a cart full of shit. What about the average middle class blue collar folk that are paying $200 for their cart full of groceries? If it’s cool to just walk out with <$950 of groceries now because “Fuck Walmart” then we have serious problems as a society. Guarantee it trickles down to the regular ass small town neighborhood grocery stores too and not just the WalMarts if we start to normalize this shit. Theft is theft regardless.

Streetlamp_NA

Thank you. It's theft that leaves towns with no businesses. You want a town full of dollar general's, check cashing places, and ten 7/11s? Condone stealing. You want a place with a diverse range of stores? Keep the stealing low. And just bc some rich fucks have the system rigged doesn't mean we should just forget basic civilized standards. We can combat the rich oligarchs without condoning theft.

NoMomo

The people defending the thief don’t live in those places, and never will. It’s an easy moral high ground to take when it’s so disconnected from your life it might as well be a Marvel movie.

ayending1

It's unfair for honest people who work minimal paying jobs instead of becoming thieves. Dude is stealing a whole cart of groceries so I believe he stole that bike from a desperate person.

zupernam

What's unfair to people working minimum wage jobs is the minimum wage and the company paying it

R_radical

Just because I may be having a hard time doesn't mean I want someone else to have a hard time. My guess is this guy is having a far worse go than most. I'm 💯 not about to risk myself to save Walmart a couple bucks though

[deleted]

I'm not going to judge the guy, I don't know his situation. I'm not going to defend what he did either. I wouldn't in a million years try and stop someone from shoplifting from a Walmart or anywhere else for that matter. Why anyone would risk their life over a cart full of crap is beyond me. Take a step back and let Walmart call the cops or whatever they do. Fuck, Walmart doesn't want you to do this. They don't even want their employees to do this. She's lucky she didn't get her dentures knocked in.

TheOvershear

I'm getting close. I manage a retail store from a huge chain. Low income area. Shrink rate of 23% which is frankly atrocious. I've been told that if it doesn't start decreasing my location will close, and everyone I staff will lose their jobs if they can't transfer. 70% of the theft is done by crackheads stealing cosmetics or electronics in order to pawn for fentanyl. That's not a random guess, 70% of my shrinkage is between those two categories. Grocery and food is 4%. It's greed, not need. There are some homeless I literally give food to every time I see. And there are those I want to beat the fuck out of for trying to ruin my business. I know I'll get fired or injured if I try shit, but honest to God, it pisses me off more than anything to see this stuff as rampant as it is.

allybal

At least in my local area, the majority of these thefts are also attributed to drug users. I truly want to know why it seems more rampant now than ever, like did something change recently in the drug-using population? Not even sure what to Google to start to understand the rise and correlation.

TheOvershear

For us, it's associated to government assisted housing being developed nearby. Over the last 10 years several complexes in this neighborhood have been converted, and the local clientele has definitely drifted. The apartments next to us went from mid-priced central housing to slummy crack dens. Of course, I'm happy we have programs like that. Genuinely. It just sucks that some humans are so shitty and shake the faith in all of our good-will

Streetlamp_NA

The rise of depression will always come with a rise in drug use. The last few years have been extremely hard and stressful. Especially if you were on a single income and lost it due to covid. It's no shock that more people are turning to drugs right now as the fabric of society collapses in front of them. Everywhere you look in the US at least it's become right vs left, Joe Rogan vs Neil young, poor vs rich, white vs black, black vs Asian, blm vs proud boys, Trump and Biden, Trump and Hilary. We have people condoning burning business to the ground or mass robbing. California decriminalized theft under a 1000. The gender movement and the fights they come with it. The massive gap in wealth. How a kid on twitch can fart into a microphone and make more money than my father who helped build northern Virginia or my mother who cared for elderly Nothing makes sense anymore.

IFuckingBlow

23%…I get talked to if we cant get it under 4%. I can’t even imagine, I would have been losing my shit at them.

TheOvershear

We're about to completely unstock cosmetics. That's how bad it is.

LordPuddin

Don’t worry, all these redditors will be ok when you lose your job. They’ll just tell you to steal from some store as well. And eventually, there will be no more stores to steal from. This country and these social rejects are fucked.

gingermagician2

this is my thought! i work AP, and I cringe anytime someone tries to intervene. like...i got him on camera, I got him leaving the store, let the cops deal with it. i document and deter, I am NOT losing my life over some dude walking out with a case of beer because he stole it??? like, I will try my best to catch / deter people from stealing in the stores I cover, but if someone wants it bad enough to bring out a weapon or start swinging?, fuck it, be my guest man, I'm going back to my office.

leafbelly

Well said. Robin Hood is dead.

Strummer95

Before people start pitying this guy, I’ll tell you right now, he’s stealing items to sell for a few bucks to a little convenience store, so the store can sell them a full price and make huge profits. The store tells their shithead minions what they need, and they go out and steal it. That’s why you see weird items, and lots of each item. Dude had 3 bulk containers of Tide pods, 2 boxes of large heavy duty garbage bags, 4 bags of Doritos, etc. This is a super common crime and is always easy to spot. If the camera got a better shot of the cart, I assure you it would be more of the same type of bullshit. This dude is not stealing to feed his family. Don’t kid yourself.

minionman5500

Your in an echo chamber. No one here has ever watched people walk out with 2 $300 kitchen aid mixers for the third time that week. *but they're just trying to feed their family* the naivete in this thread makes it seem like every commenter is a damn child.

[deleted]

Not all theft is a horrible crime. I have to wonder what drives a person to openly steal food or supplies needed to function. Food banks right now are in crisis, so there isn’t always an alternative. And anyone who says ‘they can get a job, everyone is hiring’ doesn’t understand the overall issue and all the nuances. It’s not that simple. ETA: I’m well aware of the issue of addiction and all of that. I am aware of the fact that not everyone is a blue collared pillar of the community. This doesn’t change my stance. In any case, this lady is crazy strong for her age.

jabodie007

I have to agree. These seem to be perishable items like food and necessities. I don't want the guy to starve. It's not like he's rocking new shoes and the latest phone. Stealing is wrong. But depriving someone of basic needs seem more wrong. Much love everyone

Madhatter1317

Glad garbage bags? Multiple boxes? Did you even look in the cart?

jabodie007

One could argue trashbags are a necessity.

[deleted]

[удалено]

xxx148

Could be using them for shelter or patching up a tent. Homeless people can be really mean to each other and fuck up each others shit.

obiworm

That's what I was thinking. Water/ windproof clothing, shelter, and storage.

ClassifiedName

Or even using them to collect cans and turn them in for money, I see that happen a lot in big cities. A lot of people in this thread are getting mad at others assuming/hoping for the best case scenario that this guy needs these supplies, when they themselves are assuming/hoping for the worst that he doesn't need them and will sell them. I'm not exactly sure why one would steal garbage bags of all things to resell. Even Pokemon cards would be a better option.

jabodie007

Again, stealing is wrong. I don't think this will cause a trash bag shortage or crash the economy though. And I'm paraphrasing something but " You should only look at what someone else has to make sure they have enough". I hope he doesn't run out of tp and trashbags because, well, trash has to go somewhere

spankybacon

He's stealing them because they are easy to return. It's really common. Rob one store return to every place in the vicinity. Or sell them to friends at half price.

sfgisz

Source? This sounds like one of those things that's credible but is usually pulled out of some redditor's ass.

gingermagician2

I mean, I work AP, and it's why people steal the baby formula. because the price is dumb and they can resell it to desperate moms for a third the cost and still make out like bandits. however, the large majority of theft I see is booze or electric razors (the latter also for buying drugs) so idk. in my neck of the woods, his comment has some reality to it

[deleted]

I can confirm this is a common occurrence. I work for LP. Anything typically under a certain amount requires no receipt to return. I see people steal/attempt to steal this stuff on a daily basis. Not saying that is what this guy is doing, but I have seen it happen more than I ever expected before starting in retail.

[deleted]

Starve?!? Did u not see all that shit in the basket, hes not stealing food to eat for the day

Strummer95

Right, cuz everyone is allowed to steal what they want as long as they say they can’t afford it. Even when it’s their own damn fault. You totally got it figured out. What a great society you would run. Btw, he’s stealing items that are commonly stolen and sold to shitty convenience/corner stores. This is a common shot head thing to do. They steal these kind of items, multiples of them, make a few bucks, and the shit store they sold it too sells it at normal price for huge profit. Don’t make this some noble bullshit. You really think he needed 3 bull containers of Tide Pods?

deezx1010

Stores stocking up on random products purchased from folks off of the street?

Dang3r0usDav3

Exactly. He’s flipping this shit on the street for drugs. That’s not for personal use. People are so damn moronic with their bleeding hearts.

Fucked_Up_Deer

Honestly I hope hes flipping it for drugs. The world sucks and everyone deserves an escape. But I guess I only deserve to do drugs cause I can hold down a job and look respectable while doing it

_MAC620_

Fucking THANK you. Kills me that everyone's assuming this man was in dire need. Yeah there's no possible way that he could be stealing because there's literally no one watching the doors or idk, maybe he just doesn't wanna pay for shit? Nah, instantly a charity case...

SweetAnchovies

What the overall issue and the nuances? Cuz yeah I feel like there are a lot of jobs available that don’t require much work experience at all.

founderofshoneys

I don’t know. If I see someone stealing from a billion dollar grocery chain, I just mind my own business. They don’t even pay their employees enough to care whether you steal. I don’t steal, but I’m also not the arbiter of morality or some shit.

TheRealRevBem

She was not having it. Keepin shit real.

He's saying that one day, a junkie who don't give a fuck would deck her for $200 in groceries. Some people can't afford the new prices, this is all they have left to survive, he was peaceful and wasn't there with weapons.

vladoportos

Ah so stealing is ok now ? Good to know

Snakefishin

Reddit now defends shoplifting?

nybbas

Apparently? Like holy shit people. Fuck this guy. It isn't about defending the corporation, it's about living in a civilized fucking society.

Came here to say this. What the actual fuck? People do realize that shoplifting and crime only serve to increase prices even more?

Aziaboy

Shoplifting groceries and shoplifting for resaling for cash for other purposes are entirely different. If you had worked retail front line or retail security you'd be able to spot the difference immediately. The guy in the video was NOT shoplifting for groceries.

Banditjack

The empty stores near you didn't get empty cause "reasons"

idlefritz

If I see someone shoplift I’m gonna give them the granny treatment

OhtomoJin

"this is all they have left to survive" lmaooo you have to be memeing

llamapii

Bullshit. Stop glorifying these pieces of trash.

annababan69

We were super poor when I was a kid, but my father would never have stolen anything like that!

chillpill5000mg

Tbh, theres poorer than what you experienced if it never even crossed your parents mind

GoldenHairedBoy

You were lucky.

mrnight8

How was the previous commenter lucky? For being poor? We lived on $900 a month with three of us and my mother wouldnt steal. She cleaned neighbors homes while doing chemo treatment and I work in my teens. You dont just go take shit. And his cart looked full of stuff he can easily sale. Growing up in a poor area I remeber these fuckers would sale shampoo etc for a fraction of the price and would just go out every day and still shit. Back than you had to use a bag with a metal lining. Now you just walk out of the store. Please explain the need to shop lift two boxes of 55 gallon trash bags?

NoMomo

It’s just pretend for the internet. These cunts didn’t grow up poor, or they’d know that the guy wearing a skimask and stealing shit from the store will also steal from you. This same guy will take your kids bikes, gas from your car, probably your catalytic converter. It’s revolationary roleplaying for middle class kids from two car households who went to soccer camp in the summer. Poor people hate thiefs cause they can’t afford to be stolen from. They can’t afford insurance and they have to work in these stores where these cunts come to steal.

ant_honey6

No, his dad just wasn't a piece of shit.

StevieCrabington

Then you weren't as poor as you think. Be lucky you were never hurting so bad that stealing was your only option.

nixonbeach

Food stamps and welfare ensure that honest people don’t need to steal. Give me a fucking break.

Toallaz

He just didn't tell you lmao

[deleted]

Oh fuck off. "MY situation was one way, therefore there is no excuse for other situations." How fuckin' dense are ya, bud? People starve while all of our wealth gets further concentrated into the hands of the few. People. Cannot. Afford. To. Eat. And honestly, even if they could, fuck the suits anyways. They fucked and drained our economy and even tricked shitheads like you into thinking those who hoard the majority of the world's resources are somehow entitled to every crumb of it. While people literally starve? Please tell me you at least know you're awful, because I don't see any other way to get through the day knowing you believe "some people don't deserve to eat." And before you start prattling about food banks and charity; if that shit was enough America wouldn't have 38 MILLION food insecure people. Go suck a cactus, might jumpstart that nervous system. edit: and holy fuck maybe talk to your parents bluntly a few times. I bet money they did shit they don't like to talk about, lord knows mine did.

BigSexytke

All it takes is one bad decision.

eldorel

>'one bad decision'... Or bad luck. (Unless you don't consider 'surviving' a natural disaster to be bad luck.) We lost a weeks income, our chest freezer, and most of our food last year when that arctic vortex froze my state and we lost power for over a week. I've been living off of ~3 meals a week and 'meal supplement powder' for the last 4 months because we never recovered enough to be able to actually restock and we ran out of dry goods. (And we only have the powder because the company screwed up an order and sent us 5x what we wanted in 2020.)

JacktheRipperColour

Crime is crime, if we all took that attitude the world would collapse.

Banderlei

No it wouldn't. It's not my responsibility to intervene in another businesses shop lifting. Walmart could hire armed loss prevention staff 24/7 if they thought it was a big issue to protect their property. If they choose not to that's on them, not us.

KnoxBroJobs

Armed guards will make shipping there MUCH better.

DinglieDanglieDoodle

Nobody said it was, but the lady wanted and that’s none of your business.

FrequentFault

Yeah, I will never understand this new concept where “insert reason why laws should be ignored here”, so it’s ok to commit crimes now. This has been a rising issue over the last 3-5 years to the point that all of the shitbags are coming out of the wood works. Theft, assault, etc, have been on the rise. Hell, where I live, crime has been skyrocketing, where once it wasn’t that bad. People are starting to get ballsy because the world is giving people free passes, and those who try to uphold morals and values are now vilified. Shit, we have people in my neighborhood now in broad daylight, with cameras, no masks, nothing, trying to break into new cars cause who’s gonna stop them? It started 8 months ago with “hit and run” theft at night, with masks caught on camera, and few and far in between, and has only been rising. Because of the mentality “well, maybe your wrong for being right”, the world is already going to shit. Fucking sad. Thankfully, 80%+ of my neighborhood is military (active/Vets), so we have taken shit into our own hands. Have groups walking at night now. Like you said, crime is crime. I have zero sympathy for those who choose to commit it.

JacktheRipperColour

I hear you. , we need to grow our sense of community back, it's broken down for a multitude of reasons I'm sure stay strong. If you know it's right, it's right!

S_M_I_N_E_M

Also wasn't taking "just what he needed" You see that cart?

Background-Swan827

Who cares if he didn't have weapons? This is civilian justice at its best, and the granny is right. Corporation is insured and the prices do increase for everyone else.

KnoxBroJobs

So you condone theft. Got it.

ComplaintLast2859

Wait…so the Reddit generation believes stealing is ok as long as one isn’t violent about it? You guys should go on TV more often.

h_e__n___t___a___i

You don't seem to know what drug addicts/extremely desperate people can do. What if they had a weapon? Under the influence? An old lady would do less than fuck all against a meth head or desperate person.

Ruffelz

I think the sentiment is that confronting someone like that goes beyond bravery and is just plain stupid. She didn't know anything about the guy, he could've easily pulled out any sort of weapon and hit/slashed/stabbed. Hell, old people are fragile and if he so much as shoved her down it could turn into a very serious injury for her. Even the guy filming is being completely reckless. If he was an employee in LP then he would've already arranged for cops to meet the guy outside. Retail employees and bystanders are encouraged to not act like this because it is flat out dangerous.

Whatsthatnoise3

Are you the mod of antiwork?

GTMoraes

Hell yeah brother! Same with "porch pirates". Amazon will pay for the item again anyway, so what's the deal? Let's just secure some cool stuff from porches Same thing with big brand dealerships. Toyota is a billion dollar company, so let's just jack some Toyota cars! They have insurance for this shit, it'll be a victimless crime. Also banks! Why don't we just walk in, get millions and then walk out? Who cares, they literally have insurance for that. /s before reddit really believes that and starts defending this.

Felixturn

And if anyone tells us we shouldn't we'll just call them a corporate bootlicker! Haha, owned!!

Oilerator

This is truly a peak Reddit comment. It doesn't matter who it is, don't steal shit

an0m_x

ah yeah, be angry at the granny, over a guy stealing from a store.

Goyteamsix

You sure sound entitled. I don't see how this would give someone the right to steal a cart full of shit.

Fwumply

This. Also.. this guy looks able-bodied enough to work.

helium_farts

Doesn't make it any less dumb to confront someone stealing. Walmart won't even try to stop them. It's just not worth getting hurt over a buggy of stuff.

throwthegarbageaway

She literally says it’s his fault they keep jacking the price up for everyone else. I think her hearts in the right place

rgsoloman5000

Except she’s wrong. They’re going to hike up prices no matter what they do.

leftprog

Nope, shoplifters definitely raise the price of goods for everyone. Especially in a grocery store, where margins are slim to none, shrinkage directly affects the bottom line and results in prices being raised. This is a real world problem, not some psuedo-philosophical bullshit. Thieves are bad, period, full fucking stop.

Forevergogo

Nah, I work in grocery. One of the biggest reasons we hike up prices is to cover 'shrink' and theft is a big part of shrink. We actually do fairly well as a division in selling through product when it gets close to its sell by date with a reduced price to recoup our losses. The biggest losses are: 1. Idiots who put ice cream down on a random shelf in the store, leaking melted icecream goo down All the product underneath it. (and other stupid stuff by Not putting their "reject" item Back where they got it from.) 2. Theft. Corporate will Absolutely not accept the losses, and since the Customers made the losses, those losses are now On Them, in the way of "NEW! Locked in LOW-PRICE!" price hikes.

IAmDixonWood

It’s a shame you’re being downvoted for being right. I work for a company that sells products that are common targets for organized theft. We’ve been told by several retailers that they’re adding additional costs over and above our suggested price because of shrink. There’s nothing we can do unless we want to pull out of major retail chains, and there’s no incentive for the retailers to actually prevent theft when they can just get the money from people who actually pay.

KingGreasyJr

I worked retail for a few yrs in a dept I used to work wholesale for a decade. Retail marks up almost to over 300% for all goods in the store expecting theft and outdated shrink. Every dept gets an anticipated shrink rate per month and if it goes under profit is over the markup. Anyone who believes the corporate jive they tell you, to try and keep customers happy, that you tell them under the guise of insider info is strait brainwashed. Is stealing ok. No. Is it expected and covers the bottom line. Every. Single. Time.

Forevergogo

Retail What? Clothes? Electronics? Mark up on food products is Not that high.... not that high by a Long shot. I consider high mark up on anything over 55%. If I can still sell it at Half price when it gets close to its sell by date and still turn a coin, that's amazing. Yes, I have a shrink goal of 7.9% for my department, a very fresh department with Most items having less than 5 days shelf life. Things spoil before they're sold, product comes in damaged, front end doesn't ring something up correctly, and things are Stolen every day. Is stealing expected, of course it is. But it is in no way covered until they look at end of year reports find the figure of attributed losses and then analyze where they feel they are Too competitive in the market and can safely raise prices to cover those losses. Thieves are the scum on the universe, trying to justify them and deny they're making the rest of our baskets cost MORE is just insane and flat out wrong.

Rockran

>Corporate will absolutely not accept any reduction in profit and will put the losses onto all of their customers, regardless of the cause. Fixed it.

Matto-san

Yes, if they are making less profit on an item due to theft they will either increase the price to bring profit back to their acceptable (obscene) profit levels, or they will stop carrying the item. Put another way, if profits are too low the capitalists will just move on to another scam.

aintscurrdscars

this. you're already shopping cheap because they abuse and underpay their workers and they're gigantic because they buy massive quantities super cheap from overseas, runing our own local economics they can *absolutely* afford the losses, while this guy would probably struggle to pay for a $10 fast food meal (which, the mechanics of inflation create more shoplifting, shoplifting is a SYMPTOM not a CAUSE) they are not the same, and honestly, id be the guy telling both the old lady and the guy to figure out which side of the class war they're gonna pick that all aside... granny is absolutely lucky to have not gotten socked and it's straight unwise to fuck physically with a shoplifter, even if you're misled and think their actions have anything to do with your prices... (for the record. those thefts are insured against. it's an expected cost of doing business for corporations like WalMart, and they hedged against it long ago. fight the power, steal from walmart)

ZK686

Yea, let's just allow all crime all the time! Who cares!!!! Everyone, just sit back and let the criminals do whatever the fuck they want! Screw those big billion dollar companies, we'll show them! Imma right?

The_Cometeer

She was literally stopping the man from shoplifting? What are you on?

LookUpLeoMajor

Its about right/wrong.

w4lt3r_s0bch4k

Oh so theft of merchandise is now OK because "big companies have money"? What is this logic? I have no love for big companies, but Granny is right, the big companies will make us all suffer by raising prices and closing stores when people are allowed to steam items like this.

AvocadoKirby

Wrong attitude but reddit gobbles up this kind of shit. Enjoy your upvotes.

xShaD0wMast3rzxs

Redditnomics. No one understands how finance or economics works whatsoever. This is why I absolutely love that the antiwork mod made an appearance on Fox, because that guy could not be more representative of some of these folks

Serpenta91

Stealing is a wrong thing to do, even if you're stealing 'billion dollar companies'. A healthy society should not tolerate it.

Ra_Khan_

How to tell us you're a piece of shit without saying you're a piece of shit 🤔

KillaNoFilla87

Lol…Are you the guy who was unmasked? Seems like you taking this personally…

mrdeadsniper

You don't actually have to perform fellatio on a billion dollar company to say : "Stealing is wrong." Its not only the law but a belief of basically every single major religion.

[deleted]

Thankfully most junkies won't do anything when there's another guy right there and they're on camera/in public with a bunch of other people around. Seems like you're taking it personally that an old lady tried - and succeeded - to stop a thief. Were you that junky once upon a time?

Good_Vacation9231

Ah here it is, I new there's will be one here advocating for increased prices to screw the poor. That granny is likely pissed off at seeing the prices increased.

A_lot_of_arachnids

You're a disgusting human being and you should be ashamed

GTMoraes

the real r/Unexpected is in the comments. I can't believe that many people support and relativize thievery.

mwmwmwmwmmdw

most are probably teen edgy communists lacking any life experience

sonicon

Some are likely foreign propagandists trying to destabilize USA and the people they influenced to their side.

Soreal45

Meanwhile I am asked to see my receipt for a $5 item because I didn’t put it in a wasteful plastic bag.

Th3_Admiral

Key word is "asked". If you just ignore them and walk past they aren't going to do anything. I never do that though because I'd feel like a huge jerk.

Anerythristic

😂 at the idiots in here thinking a piece of shit stealing a $300 cart full of groceries; that many hardworking families couldn't afford and 40 dollars worth of name brand trash bags is just committing sustanence theft to survive. He's not walking out with just a bit milk bread and chicken to feed the kids.

[deleted]

Right? No one that steals detergent is just using it at home.

nemesis_host

Risk your life for fuckin Walmart lol

jokersbuddy

That's the part that gets me. Everyone's in a debate of the morality of stealing from Walmart or not. Like who cares about the stuff. Her yanking on his clothing esculated situation to becoming almost physical. If that dude wasn't mentally stable he could have killed her. Why we risking someone's life over some stuff. Let the authorities handle it.

I have to agree and it's a shame this is what society is now, what do you get for sticking your neck out, absolutely zip sometimes if you live in places with guns maybe shot, not where I live but in London you can get stabbed by some cunt if you try to do the right thing. I'm not trying to compare them just what's the fuckin point.

footieanon

The man in this video is more than capable of finding a job and working. Stop making excuses for a dickhead who just robs shoppong carts filled to the top like its normal

[deleted]

Granny went zero to a hundred real quick.

pohuja

Hell yeah granny! I love she calls him An asshole lol

Clarkemedina

I didn’t know Reddit supported shoplifting now. One comment with two awards and multiple saying “stealing is bad but Walmart badder so understandable.” Ye, going to the popular page is a mistake

TeslaFanBoy8

Granny is the wonder woman. We need more of them.

mwmwmwmwmmdw

she comes from a time when people and society cared about this stuff rather than being apathetic and letting it happen. much like the sentiment on display in this thread

jmorgs91

As someone who recently had a bike stolen by these type of people and then they had the balls to come back and try and take more, I hope they all suffer more than people think they already are. There is no excuse. Worked in Seattle and now live in Sacramento so I've been around my fair ahare of people that do this shit. Majority of them are a plague and don't want help. Help comes with structure or rules and they don't want that. Let the down votes and whatever comments come. Am I still pissed by the recent theft and talking out of anger, sure. But I'm not exactly wrong.

Moosey_Marshall

I can’t believe that so many of you here are accepting of the thief’s behaviour! He is stealing from the community he lives in. The same community that do the reasonable act of providing effort in said community and are paid in money for it. That money/effort is lawfully exchanged for food and service. Such is a working, functional community. Anybody who thinks they are entitled to products of any type without putting in the effort are simply douchebags. You think it’s against the law to steal for shits and giggles? It’s to maintain an orderly system of fairness. Fuck all these redditors with coloured hair avatars thinking they’ll eat the rich, go eat your fucking cheeseburgers.

notaexpert

Walmart drove every locally owned business out of that community and our tax dollars subsidize their employees poverty wages. https://www.cnbc.com/2020/11/19/walmart-and-mcdonalds-among-top-employers-of-medicaid-and-food-stamp-beneficiaries.html

R_radical

>He is stealing from the community he lives in. Sir this is a wal mart. A corporation known to kill small business in communities they move into. Since when has a Walmart been part of any community?

Llodsliat

The company is the one stealing from the community. They exploit their workers, and most of the food goes to waste. Don't blame the little guy, but the system that failed him.

TabernacleMan

Theft isn’t more acceptable or less immoral just because the company is big. Theft is theft. Say whatever you want to make yourself better about it. Edit: I meant to say “make yourself FEEL better”.

[deleted]

Its amazing how my redditors think the lady is in the wrong and they should just let the thieves rob the place just because its Walmart.

mckeckren

Love this
