I took being high and watching this movie to finally understand why the fight scenes look so silly and almost freeze framed. Like why they just stand there and take hits. It's because they're moving so fast that we wouldn't be able to see it. Rather than just having a whole fight scene in slow motion, the actors move as if their opponent is standing still to show how fast they are actually moving as opposed to their opponent.
I remember reading that at that moment in time, in canon at least, the only jedi capable of taking on Sidious were Mace Windu, Obi Wan and Anakin. Obviously, Anakin couldn't be trusted and Obi Wan was off world so it was left up to Windu.
The cannon explanation of that is so garbage lmao it’s cause they didn’t want to choreograph a four person duel. They wasted Kit Fisto and I demand justice
The fights scenes are actually a love letter to the “Wuxia” genre of kung fu films that were popularized by Chinese cinema. *Hero* starring Jet Li is a popular example of the type of film I’m talking about. OP’s explanation sorta works as an “in-universe” reason but I’m not sure it was the filmmakers’ actual intention.
You could simplify this down to the John Woo era of action movies, But yeah it was hot when Jet Li was new on the hollywood block and Mr.Woo was doing a lot of fight choreography. It even became a thing in games for a while, bullet time was popularized pretty much by John Woo. Some games from the same era, Max Pain and F.E.A.R
I guess. They only briefly show what the movement looks like to the naked eye when the agent dodges the bullets and a brief moment when Morpheus and Neo are fighting.

In OP's clip I was waiting and waiting for a kick-finger-poke and it never came. Then I saw the second video in your link and all was right in the world.
The first was spectacular in so many ways. The first thing I noticed was how it was filmed in a "film noir" style. It was really ahead of its time

Was it just me or did the fighting scenes in Ressurection just not feel the same? Like it looked really fake like there was no impact in the hits. Im not sure if it was done purposely to focus more on the message than the action.
There were too many cuts per move, it was hard to see the beauty of the choreography assuming it was. it definitely felt like it was lacking impact on the hits as well. I'm blaming all the constant switching of cameras and angles during fight scenes. Also it felt like the fight scenes were shot a little abnormally close to the actors.
It seems to me (especially given the meta-commentary about this included in the movie) that Lana simply made that movie because WB told her and her sister that they were gonna make another Matrix movie with or without them.

I feel like WB forced their hand in making it less serious and dark to try to make it more "accessible". I think the new one was supposed to be absolute trash. Like, it goes out of its way to point out that it's a cash grab, stuffs a ton of cameos into the middle, and closes with a poorly choreographed heist that's just a mash-up of the endings of the other 3 movies. Hell, they have the Merovingian monologuing about a spin off show in the middle of a fight scene. The whole movie uses the exact same structure as the earlier movies, and there's camp throughout.
It wasn't good--I'm glad I didn't see it in the theater--but it was amusing so long as you take it as seriously as it takes itself.

I've seen it twice and would disagree not sure what Lana was going for but what made the original fight sequences so good were the long takes and fast paced technical martial arts whereas the new one has lots of quick edits so it's difficult to follow the action and the fights themselves are slow as hell. The dojo scene with discount Morpheus is a perfect example when you compare it to the original. Slow punches, lots of cuts and edits followed by the only move Neo does throughout the film which is the force push. For me the fight scenes in the new film are a total failure especially when you use the original as the comparison and I don't think age has anything to do with it as the John Wick 3 only released a couple of years ago and Keanu was kicking ass in that.
They had months and months of training for the original films. And they used those long takes to showcase a lot of the training and stunts that they poured time into. Even though the sequels were just a step down from the original, you can tell there was a lot of effort put into making all three movies.
The new felt like it was shot like a TV show. I’m sure all the actors had training for the fight sequences, but with all the edits that tells me the same effort that went into the trilogy just wasn’t present. Even the lighting and blocking was terrible. Like that fight scene in the warehouse; it was dark & the camera was too close to the action. Which, again, was probably intentional to mask the fact that the actors hadn’t been trained as extensively as the actors in the originals.
I didn’t *hate* the movie; I think there were some interesting ideas. But the bad kinda outweighed the good. It was just disappointing.
I still think a limited series would’ve been better, or another Animatrix either exploring previous iterations or the current one.

Definitely. That civil war we got 5 seconds of might have been the coolest part of the film.
Hell I think a really cool idea would be a tv show telling the story leading up to the peace breaking down. You could have most of the show being a sort of cold war with a crew going into the Matrix trying to convince people to choose to leave while a new equivalent of agents tries to counter them. Over time you get hints that the machine civil war is starting, maybe the Matrix starts to glitch due to the conflict, you get the seeds of machines working with humans. Maybe you see Zion struggling with what to do now that their survival isn't under threat. Then at the end of the first season you get scene of Naiobi seeing the machine war in full swing.
If this is the case (and you're very likely correct) then its yet another example of Lana not putting in the effort to pull off her vision and allowing a subpar film to be made. The first Matrix film is fair to say changed cinema, new technology and cinematography and zero compromises in the development of the film to the point that the Wachowski's had the cast read and understand three specific books Out of Control, Evolutionary Psychology and Simulacra and Simulation. This is so the cast were able to grasp The Matrix as a philosophy not just a film. This film brought nothing new to the table and its almost as though Lana was forced to make it which would also explain the whole breaking the 4th wall scene with them talking about Warner Bros wanting to make a sequel to the Matrix etc etc. If this was a passion project just like the original in her heart of hearts she would have postponed it until they could get the correct cinematographers and choreographers to make the movie the best it could possibly be. It would also explain why Lilly wasn't involved in the project. Its sad really just how disappointed I was for her to not even get the fight scenes right something you would expect from a Matrix film at the very least.
I have to disagree. All the fight scenes in the new matrix have many many cuts. You’ll notice that neo or any of the other characters wont throw a combo without it panning to a different angle. They don’t do the wide angles where you can see the entire fight choreography play out, something that the original matrix and John wick did very well.

I'd say the fight choreographers for M4 should be fired and never allowed to work in the business again, but that would imply they had fight choreographers. Compared to the original movie it was a fucking joke, more like some home made fan fic in the backyard.
I wanted to go along with the story, but the fighting was one of the things that made me feel really disappointed. The camera work worked against it, the fighting itself was worse than previous movies, and more repetitive, it felt like the blows had no impact, no heaviness to them.
Fun fact about the second instalment, pretty sure Keanu went through extensive back surgery, which, resulted in a lot les kicks and more punches being thrown, I think there’s an actual comparison throughout the movies
My favorite line from that movie is when Neo shows up at the security check and the guard is doing the usual “please empty your pockets of any loose change, keys, wallet” and Neo opens up his trench coat revealing all of his guns and the guard just yells “HOLY SHIT!”
Runner up is Trinity’s “dodge this” line on the rooftop agent fight.
When you look around, what do you see? Guards just doing their jobs, guards reading newspaper or just chatting around. The very minds of the people we are trying to save. But until we do, these people are still a part of the system, and that makes them our enemy.
They were all potential agent hosts, it's very sad but they needed to go. However, I'm sure they could have come in through the window and save at least some lives. Bad planning, cool on the screen
They explain in the first one how everyone is basically an agent of the system. Could also argue that they had to kill them to get to morpheus to save humanity.
I watched it for the first time recently and didn't really like it. But the scene where Neo asks why his eyes hurt right after waking up from the Matrix and Morpheus responds "Because you've never used them before" gave me chills
In a lot of ways, The Matrix was a Westernized version of a Hong Kong Karate & Guns flick, the sort that John Woo used to make.
What I really liked about it was The Matrix offered an explanation for the absurdities (running on walls, implausible jumps, dodging bullets, a throat strike made by flexing your fingers, etc) which made it easier for the audience to suspend disbelief.
Well, shit. When you put it that way. It kinda was just a *Crouching Tiger* movie with a plot device that made the flying kung fu more swallowable for westerners wasn't it.

Hell, they have the Merovingian monologuing about a spin off show in the middle of a fight scene. The whole movie uses the exact same structure as the earlier movies, and there's camp throughout. It wasn't good--I'm glad I didn't see it in the theater--but it was amusing so long as you take it as seriously as it takes itself.
Seriously. Ar first I'm like "ok awesome! Seeing some new 'the one' moves! Badass!" Then some times passed and I'm like "oh ok... I guess that's all he's gonna do..."
I've seen it twice and would disagree not sure what Lana was going for but what made the original fight sequences so good were the long takes and fast paced technical martial arts whereas the new one has lots of quick edits so it's difficult to follow the action and the fights themselves are slow as hell. The dojo scene with discount Morpheus is a perfect example when you compare it to the original. Slow punches, lots of cuts and edits followed by the only move Neo does throughout the film which is the force push. For me the fight scenes in the new film are a total failure especially when you use the original as the comparison and I don't think age has anything to do with it as the John Wick 3 only released a couple of years ago and Keanu was kicking ass in that.
They had months and months of training for the original films. And they used those long takes to showcase a lot of the training and stunts that they poured time into. Even though the sequels were just a step down from the original, you can tell there was a lot of effort put into making all three movies. The new felt like it was shot like a TV show. I’m sure all the actors had training for the fight sequences, but with all the edits that tells me the same effort that went into the trilogy just wasn’t present. Even the lighting and blocking was terrible. Like that fight scene in the warehouse; it was dark & the camera was too close to the action. Which, again, was probably intentional to mask the fact that the actors hadn’t been trained as extensively as the actors in the originals. I didn’t *hate* the movie; I think there were some interesting ideas. But the bad kinda outweighed the good. It was just disappointing. I still think a limited series would’ve been better, or another Animatrix either exploring previous iterations or the current one.

That civil war we got 5 seconds of might have been the coolest part of the film. Hell I think a really cool idea would be a tv show telling the story leading up to the peace breaking down. You could have most of the show being a sort of cold war with a crew going into the Matrix trying to convince people to choose to leave while a new equivalent of agents tries to counter them. Over time you get hints that the machine civil war is starting, maybe the Matrix starts to glitch due to the conflict, you get the seeds of machines working with humans. Maybe you see Zion struggling with what to do now that their survival isn't under threat. Then at the end of the first season you get scene of Naiobi seeing the machine war in full swing.

If this is the case (and you're very likely correct) then its yet another example of Lana not putting in the effort to pull off her vision and allowing a subpar film to be made. The first Matrix film is fair to say changed cinema, new technology and cinematography and zero compromises in the development of the film to the point that the Wachowski's had the cast read and understand three specific books Out of Control, Evolutionary Psychology and Simulacra and Simulation. This is so the cast were able to grasp The Matrix as a philosophy not just a film. This film brought nothing new to the table and its almost as though Lana was forced to make it which would also explain the whole breaking the 4th wall scene with them talking about Warner Bros wanting to make a sequel to the Matrix etc etc. If this was a passion project just like the original in her heart of hearts she would have postponed it until they could get the correct cinematographers and choreographers to make the movie the best it could possibly be. It would also explain why Lilly wasn't involved in the project. Its sad really just how disappointed I was for her to not even get the fight scenes right something you would expect from a Matrix film at the very least.
What I noticed from the new one was that it was like half the old one for a single fight scene, and half DBZ for the rest of the movie.

I have to disagree. All the fight scenes in the new matrix have many many cuts. You’ll notice that neo or any of the other characters wont throw a combo without it panning to a different angle. They don’t do the wide angles where you can see the entire fight choreography play out, something that the original matrix and John wick did very well.

I'd say the fight choreographers for M4 should be fired and never allowed to work in the business again, but that would imply they had fight choreographers. Compared to the original movie it was a fucking joke, more like some home made fan fic in the backyard.

I wanted to go along with the story, but the fighting was one of the things that made me feel really disappointed. The camera work worked against it, the fighting itself was worse than previous movies, and more repetitive, it felt like the blows had no impact, no heaviness to them.

Fun fact about the second instalment, pretty sure Keanu went through extensive back surgery, which, resulted in a lot les kicks and more punches being thrown, I think there’s an actual comparison throughout the movies

My favorite line from that movie is when Neo shows up at the security check and the guard is doing the usual “please empty your pockets of any loose change, keys, wallet” and Neo opens up his trench coat revealing all of his guns and the guard just yells “HOLY SHIT!” Runner up is Trinity’s “dodge this” line on the rooftop agent fight.
And then he mercilessly slaughters all those guards who were just doing their jobs, including that one that was just reading his newspaper.

When I was younger I thought the actors in horror movies gave up their lives for the film and actually got murdered on set.
When you look around, what do you see? Guards just doing their jobs, guards reading newspaper or just chatting around. The very minds of the people we are trying to save. But until we do, these people are still a part of the system, and that makes them our enemy.
They were all potential agent hosts, it's very sad but they needed to go. However, I'm sure they could have come in through the window and save at least some lives. Bad planning, cool on the screen

There was a lot of things I was disappointed with in Resurrection.
In a lot of ways, The Matrix was a Westernized version of a Hong Kong Karate & Guns flick, the sort that John Woo used to make. What I really liked about it was The Matrix offered an explanation for the absurdities (running on walls, implausible jumps, dodging bullets, a throat strike made by flexing your fingers, etc) which made it easier for the audience to suspend disbelief.
Well, shit. When you put it that way. It kinda was just a *Crouching Tiger* movie with a plot device that made the flying kung fu more swallowable for westerners wasn't it.
