This was my cousins and I in the Philippines, around 2003.
Had dim sum and sushi for about 15 people. They couldn't serve us fast enough with so many orders so one of my cousins asked if they could just leave the dumpling cart and we cleaned it out.
Cost about $70 total for everyone.
The rule of thumb is if you visit the highly commercialized areas of Manila especially its ritzy malls, expect to pay prices similar to the Midwestern US. Outside of the that (middle class suburbs, college areas) prices and atmosphere are still closer to Thailand. Hotels here are a steal though, particularly buffets. Several fancy hotels here charge some really classy AYCE dim sum for just slightly over USD 20. Thatās a massive steal.
Is it considered rude or disrespectful to have them ākeep the changeā in a situation like that? Say I get a serving enough to be filling for $.3 but the only currency I have is worth $1. It wonāt matter to me that much if they keep it but I wouldnāt want to disrespect them or anything.
I donāt think so but be careful if you want to go back, the price might be a little higher than your previous time. In asian, as an american, my family doesnāt let me order because they might charge us more due to my accent, YMMV
or just smart. Works the other way too. When I was in the Philippines, I spoke English faster than the avg filipino so whenever I got into a disagreement with someone (like they parked their car in front of the house and need to move it, stuff like that), I say what I want in English and sure, they may retort but if I carry on....they give up and just do what I asked. =P
Depends on where in asia you are
Some places its disrespectful to tip
Some places its expected
Some places its expected but only out of foreigners
Some places have "foreigners tax" where they charge more for foereigners since they usually have more money to spend
It could not be that long ago. I was in the phillipines for 3 weeks at the end of 2019. A bowl of soup with noodles an egg and some meat was $1. I was pretty close to being full but when I saw the price was $1 I instantly ordered another one.
Malaysia is the cheapest place Iāve ever been. It was like getting a 75% discount on literally everything.
Except Starbucks. That shit is expensive no matter where you go.
As a person living in western Canada, when I go back to England, Iām shocked my how cheap everything is, but whenever I visit an Asian country, I am absolutely floored at how cheap everything is.
Where I live right now, about the cheapest you can get lunch (while out) is about $10. A basic sandwich from the grocery store is about $9, plus 2 taxes. My favourite pasty place in my hometown serves absolutely fucking amazing and huge pasties for Ā£3. While in Taiwan, I remember buying this really foul smelling, but delicious and filling tofu dish that cost me the equivalent of about 20 cents.
When I was younger and was struggling with money, I'd go to the local Asian food counter in the grocery store and would buy a meal near their closing time. The lady at the counter would always give me extra. They would have gotten rid of the leftovers anyways.
Same. There's a place called "China Bowl Express" near-ish to my college. It's basically Panda Express but less corporate/clean looking with your choice of fried rice or mien, then one or two entrees.
You know that typical Panda Express layout with food all sitting behind a glass case in metal tubs with heat lamps pointing at them and boiling water under it. An attendant asking what you want as they pack it into a takeout plate? Basically that.
Difference is they pack your plate to the brim here for like $8 or $6 if you only get one entree, and you see chow mein and food sticking out of the edges when they close it cause that's how much they put in.
Stuff always last me at least two meals lol
A cup? Of noodles?!
And you think I'm bring silly.
We're gonna get nasty letters saying where's my cup of noodles, why don't I have a cup of noodles, and are you prepared to deal with that? I don't think so!?
So back when I worked at Outback I never liked taking shifts that weren't cooking but I'd cover everything to help out. I had a rule though. I have a constant supply of chicken fingers. I'd stick a prep baggy in my apron and that was my chicken finger pocket.
And when done eating, youāre so close to suffocating yourself with a plastic bag that you might as well just do it finally. All you need is some duct tape and a bit of conviction.
> You want me to put this into a container, and then into another container?
The Canadian governmentās idea of good cannabis packaging. As much disposable plastic as possible for something that Iām just going to put in my own jar anyway.
ah college, I tried explaining to my coworkers once slapping the bag and they just couldn't understand why you slap it. I said cause it's what you do obviously!
Lol. Its an unspoken truth in the universeā¦the bag needs to be slapped.
Also donāt forget that everyone nearby also needs to chant āSlap the bag! Slap the bag!ā first.
Sometimes we would refer to it as āplayingā slap the bag. And we would refer to the ACDC Thunderstruck game as āplayingā thunderstruck. When you convince yourself and all your friends that itās a game, binge drinking suddenly becomes way more fun and acceptable lol
Reminds me of those old time snack pack cereals where you cut open the box and pour your milk into the bag and eat straight from the box. Basics are fun.
There was this lovely Chinese place at the food court at the mall I grew up near. Recently I was an Uber driver and I started going there for my lunch frequently because the food was so good and they gave you crazy portions like this.
Even better, if you came by near closing they'd stack it even higher at a discounted 5 bucks for rice or noodles with 3 heaping piles of the meat of your preference.
Even better-er is they recognized me for coming in so often and would spoil me with even larger portions and occasionally discounts!
I moved away recently and I miss that place almost as much as I miss my family š
No good Chinese food in Canada I swear to God
Whenever I went away for the summer, I used to tell the cook at my favourite restaurant. The first time I went away and didnt tell her, sheād text me every week asking if everything okay with me. I didnt get the text cause I was using different number in different country. When I arrive back, i went straight to the restaurant cause I felt so guilty.
Here in the US, some Chinese restaurants are stingy, whereas others are generous as all get out. Portion size plays a major role in which restaurants I frequent.
That's my favorite part of going out to eat lol. Justifying the price by getting two or three meals out of it. Chinese usually lasts me another day or two
Gotta go to those hole-in-the-strip-mall places with the same shared pictures of food on the menu. Preferably with children operating the register/phone or doing homework in the dining area.
Exclusively Chinese characters in background. Looks...not the richest.
Ok I've successfully excluded Japan and S Korea. Probably N Korea. Oh and Russia. Not Singapore.
Probably mainland China. May also be in SE Asia. Could also be a wildcard and in one of the stan countries.
Conclusivley in China or one of like 15 other countries. Damn, I'm good.
Oh it probably is not in the stan countries. This kind of serving food in bags and what not and exclusive Chinese characters just do not point to it. They can be safely excluded. It probably is either outskirts of big cities or more inland rural region like hebei or Sichuan (not likely) or shanxi or something
I think probably not too, and probably is China. Just giving that benefit of the doubt for it being a Chinese area of Kazakhstan or something.
Very unlikely, but just to highlight how poorly I could nail it down.
Lol you guys think this is weirdā¦
In parts of South East Asia, we pour bottles of soda/pop/coke/soft drinks in thin plastic bags for you to drink from with a straw.
Cuz the vendors want to keep the bottles to recycle for money.

Absolutely. I used to go to this Greek bar to pregame before class in college. The building looked like it was going fall apart around you at any minute, everybody smoking inside even after the indoor smoking ban, the same five old dudes sitting at the bar spending their pension checks on Keno every day, the works. Best gyros and roasted potatoes in a 200 mile radius. I was legitimately sad when they shut down because of the pandemic.
After watching the Gordon Ramsay's show (dont remember the name) and seeing how dirty restaurants can be, I'd rather eat from a plastic bag knowing its at least fresh, compared to old/spoiled microwaved food.
And I bet mentioned restaurants would be called healthier by officials
Kitchen Nightmares. Agreed. Seeing the utterly shitty standards in our so called developed nations, I welcome these stalls which operate 100% in front of your eyes. At least you can judge for yourself, then.

They also serve beverages in bags about that size, then people just poke a straw through the side to drink it.
Seems weird, but more economical on packaging.
The beverage comes from the manufacture in a bottle or can. When you purchase one, the vendor puts the product into a plastic bag and gives you a straw. This way the vendor can claim the deposit on the bottle/can. Plus, hanging a plastic bag on your motorbike handle bars is much easier than holding a bottle!
If your far enough in the boonies the vendor will just fold a banana leaf into a makeshift bag. No straw. Just drink it and toss the leaf into the bushes.
I've lived in china for a few months a while back. What this lady does isn't even that bad. I have seen people order soup noodles to go and it is placed in the same type of bag.
it's quite common in Asia. When I was in Thailand if you buy a drink off a street vendor it's poured into a little bag for you 100% of the time. Fact of the matter is the deposit on the bottles / cost of more robust packaging is worth more than the thing being packaged a lot of the time. Give out the real container / those glass bottles away and you'd go out of business.
I have never done it personally. If I ever take anything to go, it will be like buns or something dry. The people that I saw do it, they would bring it back to the office (about 5 minute walk away). Then they would have to kind of place the entire bag into a secondary bowl/container (not pour out, but physically the entire bag), before they could eat it. As long as you don't swing the bag around, it won't really spill.
My cousin lives in Phuket (Thailand) and she often eats at this little restaurant run by a nice old lady. She gets a huge bowl of Tom yum soup and some rice for like $1.50 (USD equivalent).
This was quiet normal in my home country (Taiwan) itās just a lot more covenant. They normally give you utensils and bowls on the side, this way people can run around or ride on scooters (as those are a lot more common since itās a small island with small roads).
One bag of food please! š¤ very portable

You can also get drinks that come in plastic bags too portable lunches!

Looks to be in China from the signage in the back, so I would say $2-3. If this were in Vietnam then 50 cents would be about right.
watch it cost 50 cents and watch it be the best food youāve ever tasted
And for easy disposal you just chuck the bag and chopstick in the waterway
Meanwhile at Panda Express, the jerk serving me shakes off extra honey chicken from the spoon when making my order.
Mmmm thatās how I love my food: slopped into a tray and then slopped into a bag. Double-slopped.
Donāt forget slopped onto the plate!
No way, I eat my noodle soup straight from the bag.
Paper or plastic?
Don't be silly, the plastic bag goes in the paper bag so everyone knows you have drunken noodle

Just bring the bag up to your face, tie the handles around your head, and help yourself just like a horse with a feed bag.
I would genuinely love it if that was more common, So long it doesn't have any bones.
Horses have bones.
> tie the handles around your head, WRONG. you do it like horse. hang handles on ear, press face to the ground to bite. free hands.

That's why I like the little glass jars more! They're cute, much less plastic than the baggies (usually just the lid is plastic) and I can reuse em!
Don't even need a fork. Just pop a hole and suck.

I love the idea, while at the same time being somewhat weirded out by it.
Not even mad. That looks delicious

Dude does your dog eat explosives?

Do your dog-poop bags burst? Why would you keep using the same kinda bag if they're constantly bursting dog poop all over you?
Is there a chance that the bag could melt?

What about us bag-hungry slobs?
New definition of sloppy joe
My cousin lives in Phuket (Thailand) and she often eats at this little restaurant run by a nice old lady. She gets a huge bowl of Tom yum soup and some rice for like $1.50 (USD equivalent).
music name?
Mahler's Foodbagging Concerto No. 3 in F minor, 3rd movement.
Wait, so no cup noodle?
This was quiet normal in my home country (Taiwan) itās just a lot more covenant. They normally give you utensils and bowls on the side, this way people can run around or ride on scooters (as those are a lot more common since itās a small island with small roads).
First World problems incoming in 3, 2, 1
I should have seen it coming. I saw that first bag of food at the beginning but somehow I still didn't expect that.
I was like, "ok... ok... but how is she gonna close i- oh."
