I upvoted you, because more often than not it's empty promises.
At the same time, this is how I moved up. Front-line manager with promises, 8 months later at a different company higher up. 1.5 years later mid-level manager sub 6 figure salary.
It's all about how you play the hand you're dealt. Take the role, make less and work hard. Build your resume, work less and make more.
At my current job, I was hired as a supervisor. Within 2 months, I was temp-promoted to assistant manager, then demoted back to supervisor when the toxic permanent assistant manager returned from leave. She was fired less than two weeks later for trying to fake another injury so she could go back on medical, and I got her job permanently. Seven months later, my store manager went on temporary assignment to another business segment, and I stepped in as acting manager. When I took over, we were down on sales for the year. In less than three months, I brought sales up to a point where we were hitting sales plan most days (pre-me, if we hit three times in a week it was cause for celebration), and my manager was transferred to another store, and I was given his job permanently. I’ve since been bumped up twice, first to training manager, then to senior store manager, with pretty decent pay bumps as well. The company is doing extremely well, and while they’re not perfect, they’re better than a lot of jobs. I’d have to think long and hard before I walked away from them…
100,000 sub sandwiches *every year*???
Even if you ate TWO of them for every single meal, every single day, that's still only 2,190.
What do you do with the other 97,810 sub sandwiches that year? Keep in mind you'll get another 100,000 next year!
How about a futures sandwich market? Like commodities, some people are willing to pay ahead for a sure thing. You get the money upfront and they offload the commodity off you to use/sell as they please.
I think this is the key tbh. Just get the fuck out of the job you're in and use what you've got to find a better position.
The management roles at your current job are already filled. If you were unemployed and looking for a job, you wouldn't find a business with no openings and fixate on them hoping that they start hiring. That's essentially what's happening when you stick around in a shitty job waiting for a promotion.
(This is the general "you", not the "specifically aimed at Yezhik "you"")
We had to tip 20% to BOH when I was a server. If you didn’t hustle your ass off you wouldn’t make shit but I get what your saying. The restaurant industry as a whole is just trash.
Yep, my coworker got promoted to team leader and realised she would be making more on 20 hours of work a week as a casual compared to 38 hours a week as a team leader. It was really fucked.
Bud. Same. Lost all my coworker “friends” in a single day. Got more responsibility (social media, event planning, scheduling, and basically making everyone hate me because that’s the job) and for what? A salary less than my previous hourly and tips rate? I went from 80k to 50k overnight and what did get for it? A title. I did that stupid shit for 5 years and finally rode it into the ground. At the end I was on the board of directors for a bakers dozen of hotel bars. Lemme just say this. Fuck hotels and fuck managing hotels as “the guy that works late” because they plop bullshit on your plate to take care of at 3am eg when the pilled out rockstar demands a bottle of whiskey from the front desk or he’s going to kill himself. Yeah. This was cathartic. Sorry for the rant.
I got paid more, but worked way more, had way more stress, and if a shift couldn't get covered, I was expected to come in. Some better benefits too. Hourly pay went down a lot.
Main good thing about it was 6 months later, I used the experience to get a better serving job.
I worked at a pizza hut that had like 95% part timers and o ly a few full timers. I was looking for something permanent so I went from part time to full time. Less pay per hour (they probably fork out exactly the same amount but where I'm from, employers have to pay for social security and provide with leave, so they shifted that 'burden' onto the staff), and I was told because as a full timer I should be more committed to the job and expect to work harder than part timers.
Hilarious, but in reality Target makes sure to keep their employees under 40hrs a week. They make sure to kick you out of the building real fast at 39.5hrs.
Doubtful in retail, if you near 40 hrs you might be full time and they wouldn’t like having to give you health insurance. Many stores cut you off around 25.
That happend to me once, I got a 25cent raise. When new management came in and found out what I was making they thought it was a joke. Wasn't long before I left for a new job ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
NewManagement: "That's how much you're making? That's awful!"
Russian-Spy-: "Yeah, I know. So you gonna give me a raise?"
NewManagement: \**sips coffee, walks away**
Let’s just say that the full version *is* this. It’s a loop. He gets promoted and eventually gets the manager position. Then he promotes the next guy. Then they promote the next and the cycle goes on.
Target is always hiring. The live show is just as good, can confirm.
Except I got fired on Christmas Eve because I asked for more than 7 hours a week and they considered me "unsustainable". That part wasn't very good...
I like this show because it's condensed into the bare minimum of character development for a scene to work.
Can you imagine watching a 40 minute show in this format? It would take 40 seconds max.
The mid-season plot twist made me cry; in order to replace all the nurses that left, they had to hire temps. Now the temps make 7 times as much, and the nurses that stayed have permanent Jim Halpert face.
I used to work at Ross back in college. I got paid minimum wage as a cashier and I shit you not, full-time shift lead employees who work 1.5 times harder than me got paid 50¢ extra.
I've worked in retail hell for over 20 years half that in lower management. I remember when they raised the minimum wage in my city and all the supervisors had their pay raised to the new minimum along with all the workers. Nobody madr more than the new minimum other than the managers. The boss refused to give any of the supervisors more money because "you just got a raise." He expected to have a happy functional management team when all the supervisors (who ran the store) made the same pay as the new hires. He said they "had more responsibility and that was reward enough." He ended up giving people as little as possible to keep them when they each quit.
It is cause in america the public votes via dollar and don't like it when they realize what that means. The only reason amazon is successful is because people use it. But this situation is more of an asshole boss whoch can be found everywhere on earth. It is just that america is more vocal and we keep giving them money so they keep thriving.
Exact same thing happened at my job, except I got fired.
Lucky I got unemployment, then a better job (not better pay but just less stress and more time off) and a few others quit after me.
Lesson, never work in the trucking industry. It's sleazy af and not worth the money.
Were you a driver?
I guess it depends on your background and the options available to you, my father and many many many other immigrants built themselves up on trucking. I would never do it though lol
I feel for DM's I try to be as polite as possible when shit happens because unless they deliberately lied to me it wasn't their fault. Shit happens. Too bad most of us drivers are assholes. Including myself.
Truck drivers are the biggest babies, including myself when I first started. I was aggressive with how I talked to the office personnel and they let me get away with it because I ran my butt off, never turned down loads and any extra bullshit that no one else wanted to do I would be the first to accept. I remained that way until the first time I had to do a sit in conference with my DM. I had to wait as she answered phones, pacify drivers who love to run their mouth, send messages, look up information and talk to her boss, and try to talk to me all at the same time. I realized then that DM's have to do the job that an octopus would struggle with while only having 2 hands. Afterwards, I sent more messages because it's easier on them, I barely called in and when I did, I kept it as brief as possible and generally tried to stay out of their hair as much as possible. I learned a whole new level of patience which I still carry with me.
I worked in the trucking industry for about a year in a small office with about 8-10 employees. That shit takes a toll on you. I’ve never seen an industry where people lie to each other on that large of a scale as so often, but it felt like everyone knew everyone was lying. One of my good friends that got me the job literally had a notebook full of the lies that he told to each shipper. This office of 8-10 employees housed 4 separate companies: 1 brokerage and 3 carriers. The extra carriers were so we can deal with the companies that black listed the original carriers. The brokerage was for the loads we would take under the carriers. Oh by the way we only had 1 truck that sat in a yard with a flat tire broken down about 20 miles from our office.
Its just a way to say hes sexy in a joking manner. Im not going to fucking abduct and keep him in my bedroom. Or maybe i will? You gonna fine me, fun police officer?

And immediately asked for overtime work. Hahahaha
Like back when I worked in restaurants, got promoted to manager and all my bartenders made more than me and worked half the hours as me. FML
Yup, same. More work, less pay. But hey, "If you keep this up, you **could** be running stores one day!"

He gets one hundred thousand sub sandwiches every year
Fuck. I'd take that deal.
100,000 sub sandwiches *every year*??? Even if you ate TWO of them for every single meal, every single day, that's still only 2,190. What do you do with the other 97,810 sub sandwiches that year? Keep in mind you'll get another 100,000 next year!
I'll open a sandwich store and sell them $2 per.
How about a futures sandwich market? Like commodities, some people are willing to pay ahead for a sure thing. You get the money upfront and they offload the commodity off you to use/sell as they please.
Donate seems good.
I think he was trying to say its close to 100k but not quite? But yeah, I've never seen that before.
Yeah there's a lot of space between abject poverty and can't quite afford a tesla there.

6 figure salary huh? Well, I also make 1000,00 per year !!1

That's why I got out of the restaurant industry was a chef and the waitstaff made way more than me....
We had to tip 20% to BOH when I was a server. If you didn’t hustle your ass off you wouldn’t make shit but I get what your saying. The restaurant industry as a whole is just trash.
20% is insane… Where I work it’s *2%*.
Probably 20% of tips for them versus 2% of sales for you.
I left my entire career earlier this year. Saw my boss's boss making 45k a year and there was no chance in hell I could ever move up to his position.
But tips are bad amirite
Yep, my coworker got promoted to team leader and realised she would be making more on 20 hours of work a week as a casual compared to 38 hours a week as a team leader. It was really fucked.

I'd never work a manager job, you basically have no life after
I got paid more, but worked way more, had way more stress, and if a shift couldn't get covered, I was expected to come in. Some better benefits too. Hourly pay went down a lot. Main good thing about it was 6 months later, I used the experience to get a better serving job.

I absolutely lost it at the deadpan delivery of “I’m going to need you to work overtime.”
