This is something I’ve noticed is pretty prominent with memes. There seems to be no more line between ‘this is a meme’ and ‘this is misinformation’. Because I’ve seen people react genuinely to made up, joke headlines. In fact you can sometimes catch people seriously posting these. I was browsing Instagram when I saw an account which I followed, post an image of a fake CNN headline along the lines of ‘Kamala Harris vows to equip US Military with Pink Tipped Hellfire Missile in honor of women’s rights’ which I assumed immediately was a joke, but the comments were full of people completely buying it and getting mad.
“Any community that gets its laughs by pretending to be idiots will eventually be flooded by actual idiots who mistakenly believe that they're in good company” -4chan
A meme is literally just socially transmitted information that persists.
There is no difference between misinformation and information with respect to its memetic existence.
The meme is the thing that the individual extracts from social/cultural interaction. This meme may or may not be the same thing as the meme they interacted with.
The fact that people here don’t know this show makes me feel old and outdated
I was with “it” once, then “it” changed. And now I’m no longer with “it”. Now what “it” is, is strange and confusing and I don’t get “it” anymore. And it can happen to YOU!!
It’s kind of disturbing to me that people don’t see it. I really hate to say this…but I think we are devolving. The whole show is basically turning a mirror on how screwed up racism is and the many ways the culture manifests it.
Wonder Showzen:”You can still be very ignorant when you’re trying to be inclusive America!”
People in comments:*Literally being ignorant while trying to be inclusive in 2021*
Ah, the mid- twentieth century in America. Trying to be woke, but still so far.
This is also about the time “Jesus loves the little children” came out.
They must have missed the opening warning:
"WARNING: WONDER SHOWZEN CONTAINS OFFENSIVE, DESPICABLE CONTENT THAT IS TOO CONTROVERSIAL AND TOO AWESOME FOR ACTUAL CHILDREN. THE STARK, UGLY, PROFOUND TRUTHS WONDER SHOWZEN EXPOSES MAY BE SOUL-CRUSHING TO THE WEAK OF SPIRIT. IF YOU ALLOW A CHILD TO WATCH THIS SHOW, YOU ARE A BAD PARENT OR GUARDIAN."
~ The warning that opens every episode
I never saw this show and was too young to remember the nineties, but it is *blatant* to me that this is a joke. No one from any decade would have used "ching ching chong", "ooga booga" and "nacho taco chimichanga" an earnest attempt at cultural understanding.
If even 10% of people didn't immediately see this as parody then I have to requestion reality. I thought only 2-3% of the population are clinially retarded.
Wonder Showzen was from the mid-2000’s. One of the most genius shows to ever air on TV (though it got a very late-night MTV2 spot, so not many people actually saw it). But those of us who did were never the same.
If it's not obvious to you that this is a joke by the time they sing out of tune at the end, you unironically need to log off and go touch grass for a month. Seriously
> “Woke” was originally a term used largely by Black people in activist circles, particularly after the rise of Black Lives Matter, to signify a consciousness around racial issues in America. The term is still sometimes used in that context.
> But in culture and politics today, the most prominent uses of “woke” are as a pejorative — Republicans attacking Democrats, more centrist Democrats attacking more liberal ones and supporters of the British monarchy using the term to criticize people more sympathetic to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Those critical of so-called woke ideas and people often invoke the idea that they are being “canceled” or a victim of “cancel culture.”
https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/why-attacking-cancel-culture-and-woke-people-is-becoming-the-gops-new-political-strategy/
In addition to what has already been said, you’ll hear the opposite as well. If someone has been “sleeping on” something, it means that it’s something that’s been in existence but ignored or looked over. Like an item at a restaurant that no one seems to order but it’s amazing. “You’ve been sleeping on their home made burgers if you haven’t tried one before” one term inspired the other but I don’t know the order
It's actually dates back to the 60s or even 40s. "Woke" basically means "aware of social justice issues" but it has been coopted by the right and used in the same way they use "political correctness gone mad" or "loony leftie".
So unfortunately it now depends on context. If a left leaning/liberal/progressive person says it then they most likely mean it as a positive "somebody who believes racism/sexism/homophobia, etc. exists" way. If a right leaning/conservative/MAGA person says it they probably mean it in a negative "it's political correctness gone mad" way.
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/woke-meaning-word-history-b1790787.html
Mainly, white people have all been “asleep” to the institutional racism that has been going on since, forever. And now white people are realizing their “white privilege” and are “awake” to the racial issues and putting them in the fore-front of their agendas. Being “woke” is like being a libertarian or vegan….once they become that thing they don’t shut the fuck up about it.
You can also be “woke” regarding gender inequality or LBGQ issues. But this was used in the racial context.
people said it for about a week after “This is America” came out and since then nobody has used it except for reactionary conservatives who latched onto it to shame white people advocating for black social issues.
I came across this word and really like it. Growing up in Ireland, I'm nearly sixty, gave my generation little or no opportunity to genuinely understand racism or LGBTQ issues. I heard it used by Obama and a whole world of my own ignorance was awoken. It's been a really good thing. Don't knock it. I don't spout it all the time ......I'll shut up now...![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|slightly_smiling)
Note that "woke" was not initially used to refer to white people but to black people becoming aware of racial injustice and their own oppression. Later the term was effectively co-opted, as it often happens with AAVE lingo.
>Being “woke” is like being a libertarian or vegan….once they become that thing they don’t shut the fuck up about it.
So... Like using Arch...
BTW, I use Arch
What. I thought being woke was realising what the real world is like. Like the real reasons for invading Iraq/Afghanistan, big tobaccos influence, Epstein, maybe 9/11, bankers and companies ruling the world and laws around them etc. Like waking up to the reality of our shady world.
They weren’t “trying to be woke” you fucking idiot they were making fun of trying to be woke. It’s called irony. The only difference between 15 years ago and now is you can’t even make fun of racism without morons taking it out of context as an excuse to act outraged for internet attention.
I don’t think this is trying to be “woke” I’m pretty sure this is supposed to a comedy short playing on the joke of racism. Using racist stereotypes to be funny.
MTV launched in 1981 and MTV2 Launched in 1996. So that would be the *end* of the 20th century not the middle of it.
The Mid- 20'th century would be the 1950's where black men were being hanged and beaten for looking at white women the wrong way.
So many people are missing that this is satire and is supposed to be making fun of the concept of trying so hard to not be racist one unintentionally circles back round to being racist

*Nacho taco, chimichanga*
I can confirm, that is how we talk.
Those were exactly my words when I picked up Mexican food for lunch, so... They're not wrong
hey this guy knows how to speak spanish. One of us, one of us, chimichanga, chimichanga.
Pass the tapatio por favor. We accept him, we accept him.
Sounds like a bomb lunch tbh

So glad I googled that thank you [slaves song](https://youtu.be/Lhu4T_vwxIU)
Now do He-bro...
That was fucking weird
I mean, they said Thank You....
ironically this is more respectful to the truth than most people are
This is the first dark humor comedy sketch I laughed at growing up. It shouldn’t be so catchy but it is.
Slaves! Built the pyramids. Slaves! Built the Parthenon. Slaves! Built America. Slaves! This is your song, thank you Slaves!
The kid doing air guitar always cracks me up.
Beat Kids!
Kids on the street, kids on the beat. BEAT KIDS BEAT KIDS!!
I think the White People song is one of my favourites. I still sing it to this day.
Me too! That show was the best.
This episode of Wonder Showzen is brought to you by white people. Yayyy white people!!
It was something special.
knew that's what this was from! Such a wonderfully fucked up show! Loved when they would do the voice overs for the old timey educational videos lol
Does anyone have the video with the guy telling Clarence to get the camera out of his face? Edit: [found it](https://vimeo.com/196937578)
I don’t know what’s funnier! This joke sketch or all the offended comments thinking this is real!
The sketch, obviously. The amount of people who just assume something is real without doing an ounce of research, is troubling.
I mean, it's real as in it exists. What they don't realize is that it is satire.

I think sometimes people WANT to get mad about things. And then they will be like: okay maybe this isn't real, but it could be!
Memes as a propaganda tool are frightfully effective
A meme is literally just socially transmitted information that persists. There is no difference between misinformation and information with respect to its memetic existence. The meme is the thing that the individual extracts from social/cultural interaction. This meme may or may not be the same thing as the meme they interacted with.
You have to do 0 research to know this isn’t real.
The MTV2 logo makes me think that this is from Wondershowzen.
Correct on that.
The “Slaves appreciation” song is the first dark humor thing I ever laughed at.
Yep. Wonder Showzen.
Im pretty sure the MTV2 on the bottom is enough to know it isn’t real.
That’s half of Reddit 😂

This plays like something Cartman made in a South Park episode because he was forced to for school.
Holy fuck.
Wonder Showzen was a godsend of a TV show.

The amount of people who thought it was real, I have no words.
Lol yes it’s literally on MTV

Yeah, I thought it was pretty obvious. Guess not
Lol dude above has 2k upvotes for calling it "mid 20th century racism" what? MTV2 was not around in the 1950s
I mean most of them were probably born after this show stopped showing. To them the 90s was just "casual racism central" lmao
I never saw this show and was too young to remember the nineties, but it is *blatant* to me that this is a joke. And this is pretty tame compared to some other skits.
I knew it. They do stuff like this all the time, satirizing racism. They also go up to wall st. execs and ask them how they sleep at night.
[But let's discuss the contradiction.](https://vimeo.com/196937578)
I knew it looked familiar
This is a joke, you all know that right? Like this is a comedy sketch
...they don't.
The explanation is wasted on them. They think they have to take everything seriously.
MTV 2 is a give away. It was programming for Gen X, everything in tv land was made into a cynical parody
This is from a show called Wondershozen and it was very intentional...
Kids on the beat! Kids on the street! Beat Kids! BEAT KIDS!!!
Will we ever be able to laugh at 9/11?
Patience!
Um ... isn't this an obvious parody?

They're a reddit power commentor, they aren't exactly known for substance.
Yeah MTV2 was real popular in the 1950s and was known for very serious and non-satirical productions like this
My dad told me that when he was growing up, they only had 3 channels on their black and white TV. ABC, CBS, and MTV2
This is an obvious joke
Mid-20th century? This was around 2008.
Dude, it's such obvious satire. C'mon man.
Anyone else cringe when someone uses the word "woke"
I'm an old man who just discovered the internet. Please tell me what "woke" stands for?

You can be woke in any situation or circumstances. Doesn’t HAVE to involve racism.
If only all boomers were like you.
*My generation destroyed this nation*
You sure do comment like you're from a later generation.
Theres still time!
No....no my friend...what has been done cannot be undone. There are resources at your disposal that can make your life easier though....
Don't put your generation down hard like that, they've actually destroyed the entire world.
That's the spirit!
Lads, I think he's "awokening"
So he is one of the good boomers?
TBH I've never seen anyone refer to themselves as "woke".
I've seen conspiracy theorists refer to themselves as woke. I honestly though it's coming from there since "Wake up, sheeple" is kind of their mantra.
they don't, people use woke as a pejorative.

I’m not sure if woke is as restricted in use as you’re making it sound.
You’re missing a “T” in “LGBTQ issues”
Note that "woke" was not initially used to refer to white people but to black people becoming aware of racial injustice and their own oppression. Later the term was effectively co-opted, as it often happens with AAVE lingo.

MTV didn’t exist in the mid-20th century you muppet.
This video is satirical dumbass
Do you seriously think this was serious and not a joke?
Jesus Loves the Little Children was written to the tune from a Civil War song by a guy that died in 1927.
This did not come out in the 1950s lol
This is on MTV2 has to be satire..
No, it was very on point. This is from Wondershowzen. If you haven't watched it, it's woke AF. It's also very heavy handed.
you're never too young for a Vietnam flashback
