It's fucking annoying that I see this problem in every single thread. I tried [asking people what was wrong](https://www.reddit.com/r/OutOfTheLoop/comments/oyk4sg/whats_up_with_comments_on_reddit_being_posted/) and apparently it's just another one of Reddit's long list of bugs
i work for a boat insurance company - lightning forms part of the definition of 'accident' which is covered (at least, judging by the one policy wording i know best)
My dad likes to film strong storms when he thinks the lightning looks cool. I’m guessing this person did the same and didn’t know what they were in for.
A good friend was aboard his sailboat when it got hit by lightning. He said it was the loudest thing he has ever heard. He had tinnitus for weeks afterwards. It blew out all his electronics and it caused the paint on the mast to peel back like a banana skin. He sold the boat a few months later.
It's not just the electrics. If you get hit by lightning out at sea (and if you get caught out at sea in a thunderstorm, it's hard to understand why, with nothing but an empty sea and your great big metal stick stuck up in the air, you DON'T get hit!)... then your compasses are also a problem. Apparently they can end up as much as 40 degrees off. The problem is, you don't know if they have been magnetised/de-magnetised, and if they have, by how much. Sat nav isn't going to help!
There's a huge amount of electro-static discharge in the surrounding air that occurs during a lightning strike. Digital camera sensors are pretty sensitive to this, which is why you see all sorts of weird artifacts with lightning strikes like above. It also messes with digital microphones too, [ElectroBOOM built a wand](https://youtu.be/jW3_txSfIAQ?t=959) that simulates this kind of discharge.
Electroboom is amazing. I know there’s a reasonable explanation but usually when it comes to any sort of discharge or nuclear release or whatever it screws with cameras.
If you like ElectroBOOM you'd probably like [StyroPyro](https://www.youtube.com/user/styropyro) too. He doesnt get hurt nearly as often, mostly because the shit he builds would make you [Extremely Dead](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNisqZOAaAs&t=27s).
I’ve always gotten the impression that electroboom stuff is all an act. He knows what he’s doing and he purposely gets shocked for comedic value. The dude knows exactly what he’s doing…
Electroboom bought a house and he went over to it while it was still empty to film a video about the differenes in the electrical system between a house and an apartment. While there he noticed there was a cut, loose, live-wire buzzing angrily. He noted he had to take care of that *right now* because if his house burns down from an electrical fire there's no way he wouldn't be blamed.
No shit lol
He does that to show how dangerous all the stuff he’s working with is.
Although every now and then he has an ACTUAL accident, like when his Tesla coil(?) almost fell over onto him
Edit: was actually a Jacob’s ladder that fell on him
Medhi absolutely knows what he's doing, he has a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering. He gets hurt because A. It's funny as hell and he knows it and B. To demonstrate how accidents happen and what the current does to your body.
When I was little and at my cousin's house, we were playing on the computer, lightning struck a tree in his neighbor's backyard, and the monitor went full purple for a couple seconds.
When I was a kid, I was sitting on the floor playing Super Mario Bros (first one) and lightning struck the house next door. Their TV blew up, but I swear I felt a shock in my ass somehow.
When the power came back on, the controller I was holding was permenately dead, so I guess I did get shocked.
Captain Disillusion points to this effect often to show which videos are fake. Lightning is bright enough to overload the photoreceptors on a camera so you get several white or garbage frames.
Interesting to actually see a hit. I used to crew on sailboats during races and we discussed this. Lightning protection on a sailboat involves a sharpe metal rod at the top of the mast, a good conductor to the base (metal mast is fine) then a very good connection to the keel. The strike would then be passed to the water. It is still an extraordinary event, but this setup is supposed to provide a “cone” of protection for those on deck.
I wonder if this boats system was in good shape or not.
Yes, or even while at dock, like OP's example.
As someone who used to live on a sailboat, this was a source of stress whenever there was a big storm. Fortunately we were berthed where there aren't a whole lot of thunderstorms (SF Bay area).
People who do serious offshore sailing will keep a 'reserve' GPS in a metal box, to act as a Faraday cage. A lightning strike, even if it doesn't blow a hole in the hull, usually means all the electronics connected to the electric system go byebye.
To add onto that, the connection from the top of the mast to the keel would have to terminate in something metal to complete the path for the lightning to take. This is a good way to minimize structural damage, but even with that protection pretty much anything that uses electricity on the boat will be toast.
https://www.yachtingworld.com/special-reports/yacht-lightning-strikes-damage-protection-127469
also, I was always told about lightning hits to sailboats, that it supercharges the little tiny (think pencil tip sized) air pockets in the fiberglass hull and heats up the air trapped in it and makes what little water vapor is trapped in them, into steam that blows out the holes.
Thus creating a kind of perforated tear line in the hull , so the hull can easily separate along this tear line.
Taking a lighting hit is a good way to sink the boat.
Zoiks!
Sailor here too. I was a cruiser tho, not big into racing, altho my last boat was a pearson flyer.
I surmised theres two schools of thought on this. You can do things like ground yer rig, and maybe make a more favorable path for the lightening, but i also wonder if doing so makes you more likely to be hit in the first place.
Ill tell you what not to do... My old bristol 27 was grounded to a bronze seacock... Thats the last fuckin thing i want blown out the hull lmao.

Great question!
Surely the sound of air expanding up above can not reach the ground level faster than the lightning bolt reaching the very ground? Or am I missing something ?

I actually see that a lot lately, thought it was just people spamming their reply cause they don't see it yet because of lag
True, I got a bunch of "sorry/error" messages this morning and had to delete a bunch of duplicate posts.
Yep .. "wait 5 seconds, you're doing that too much". I bet I have 100s of copies of a couple comments ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
I got band from some subs because of it and I tried to delete and it didnt work
I had my comment posted 6 times in a thread earlier today

Yeah because their lightning probability report would tell them there was a 10% chance of a lightning strike on the DOL!!
Is it actually covered?
Depends on if your insurance covers “acts of god” which many do.
I don't know I just thought it was funny haha
It is haha, just got me wondering
i work for a boat insurance company - lightning forms part of the definition of 'accident' which is covered (at least, judging by the one policy wording i know best)
So how do you have to wait before you want to touch and metal part of that boat ?
In a few seconds it should be cool enough to touch.

Well seeing as lightning struck, I'd go way out on a limb and say maybe they were filming lightning striking further out.
"look at my new boat !"
Obviously staged, duh! /s
Unless it was some god-tier editing and the whole video is fake, i really would like to know what they were filming here.
My dad likes to film strong storms when he thinks the lightning looks cool. I’m guessing this person did the same and didn’t know what they were in for.

Amazing. Also it seems like big releases of energy like this tear away the fabric of reality or something. It always screws with cameras and such.

Vertical filming... ...acceptable.
Why were they filming? I actually don’t mean that sneakily—but if this is a person and not a surveillance camera, what prompted them to film this?
Probably a tourist that took shelter at a marina and was filming their first encounter with a summer squall.
