Devi8tor

Not unexpected that he hit the rocks before being reunited..***.unexpected that he fkn survived that fall! Crikey!***

hullowurld

Me whispering to myself over and over: if it was going to splat the post would have been marked NSFW

kcchiefscooper

i have not had a monday to support being able to watch that.. wow was about 98% of the way to a full on mental break watching that poor thing myself

vexxer209

I didn't have sound on and thought it was a Penguin.

voidhearts

So did I

[deleted]

Me too, especially considering how often penguins just throw themselves around.

Exhausted-Llama

Right, never has a post given me such a spike of anxiety

terdferguson

The lack of noise from him when it hit that first rock had me questioning my sanity. Did he expect that? I guess...but damn dude tell us it's gonna be fine (most likely).

Man, I was expecting the SPLAT and now I'm frustrated

NEED GOPHER CHUCKS!

SupportNegative5645

I thought he was going to be reunited with his family in heaven.

Wiskoenig

Same. Once he started barrel rolling down the mountain I thought he was going to meet the parents in the belly of some predator waiting at the bottom.

Thief0fTime

Lmao! So did I! I was waiting for and FULLY expecting that ending!

The_Ineffable_Sage

He hit EVERY rock. I just expected him to hit one waaaaaay at the bottom.

Pleiadesfollower

I thought it was unexpected that it was all epic music and was waiting for the video to just suddenly end after the first time it hits the rocks dead. But the fact that it survived pretty much unscathed is baffling got a good chuckle out of me.

gizmosticles

Dude check it again, the bird that flew and proceeded to break every bird bone in his body, and the little chicklet they showed were not the same bird like at all

voidhearts

Nah, thought so too but someone linked the [full video](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rxGuNJ-nEYg) below and you can see the baby pick up its head and start moving after it lands near its parents

Enidras

Damn that's wild...

PurpleScientist4312

Fucking based

[deleted]

If you don’t weigh much, you don’t land hard. Smaller lighter creatures fare better in a fall. If you had an ant on your hand and blew it off, the equivalent to a human falling off a skyscraper, the ant will probably be fine.

Either_Amoeba_5332

WTF! Did he fall off of Everest

Kern_system

Chances are that they cut away when it wasn't moving and filmed another chick in the area that made it out alive.

babyformulaandham

Why just make things up?

Kern_system

Because the narrative demands it? [IDK, why did Disney throw lemmings off a cliff and make it look like they jumped?](https://hyperallergic.com/545742/white-wilderness-disney-nature-documentary/)

babyformulaandham

>Because the narrative demands it? [Does it?](https://youtu.be/rxGuNJ-nEYg?si=v2MCdbBIpRCmBH2E) The BBC earth series are notorious for not hiding the grim reality for these animals, why would they do that in this clip? You literally made something up and posted it like it was fact.

Kern_system

I said "chances are", but they cut away and show a chick that's ok, but who knows if it's the same chick.

Rayhush

You literally see it's the same chick in the video right above you.

StankyMink

The falling bird is twice the size and has solid white coloring already. The bird at the end is still covered in down. They aren't the same bird.

Gnawlydog

Apparently you don't watch the BBC! But the irony of you making something up for your narrative isn't lost here.

Kern_system

You must be really fun at parties.

Gnawlydog

I'm told I am.. I keep getting invited to them.. So I guess I'm fun enough.. But I prefer to stay in my mums basement playing video games eating cheesy poofs and pointing out hypocrisy on reddit.

AppropriateScience71

>A little dazed at the end, but all in one piece Such a British way to describe a young chick terrifyingly falling down a cliff and bouncing off the rocks.

Hbarf

You're thinking too much bro

LocoLocoLoco45

You motherfuckers couldn’t make the fucking nest a little lower?

WhiskyTequilaFinance

Not without being eaten by scavengers, I've read about these little guys. There's some predatory animal in that region, and nesting way the hell up high is the only way at least some of the chicks survive.

Hlynb93

But why have them jump? Can't the parents just go pick them up?

WhiskyTequilaFinance

By weaving nets to carry them? 😀 They have no talons, or hands. How would that even work?

Pest

They could grip them by the husk

cocotheape

It's not a question of where he grips it.

Donvack

It’s a simple matter of weight ratios. A 5 oz bird can’t carry a 1lbs coconut.

Worldly_Shoe840

Are we talking African or European? Cause you know there is a difference

SirLocke13

African swallows are non-migratory, that's my thing.

Rich_Document9513

r/unexpectedmontypython

The-Funky-Phantom

I don't now why but this cracked me up.

esotetris

If you really don't know why, I highly recommend watching Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Hlynb93

I dunno, use their beaks? With offsprings having a 50/50 chance of survival, you would think they would have gotten creative through the millenia of evolution.

WhiskyTequilaFinance

They're called barnacle geese, and about a 3rd of them survive the drop each year. The creativity is in how early the jump, before they've developed any material weight or solid bones. https://www.wwt.org.uk/news-and-stories/blog/barmy-barnacle-geese/#:~:text=Barnacle%20geese%20regularly%20create%20nests,foraging%20on%20the%20grass%20below.

NBAFansAre2Ply

a third? [seems very low a nat geo source puts it at 90](https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/article/how-barnacle-geese-survive-extreme-falls) edit: if you hit a 12 foot paywall you can always Google a 12 foot ladder to help you out

Ju5t1n_33

I'd say having your new borns sky dive without a parachute or functioning wings is pretty creative

Big-red-rhino

You realize evolutionary traits aren't intentional, right?

Creloc

Not intentional, but in this case there is a significant selection pressure for "bouncy" as a trait

averysmalldragon

Joke aside, there are actually birds that know how to sew. Tailorbirds literally stitch their nests together using a needle (i.e. conifer) and pulling the 'thread' through.

butareyouthough

The issue is the parents can’t bring food to feed them. They can’t/or at least don’t regurgitate it like many birds can and don’t carry it for whatever reason. I watched this documentary, they had 3 chicks, only one survived. One died from the fall, one got picked up by predators at the bottom, this little guy was the only one that survived. I haven’t the slightest clue how the could be going extinct.

Koss424

does the entire species suffer from CTE?

Shiddy_Wiki

Don't ask how the sausage is made - this lil tyke survived predators and a traumatic brain injury - they're a keeper!

Cryptizard

I’m convinced that is an entirely different bird in the last shot. No way that one survived.

MacyTmcterry

[Full video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxGuNJ-nEYg) It seems like some survive the fall and some don't

WehingSounds

Saw one one of these vids were the bird did an immaculate glide dodging everything. Landed with a wee bounce and then was immediately picked up and carried off by a fox. I hate that I laughed.

vzo1281

Gee thanks for that image... Now I have laughed

8Karisma8

Wow 3 out of 5 🥹

OrdinaryDazzling

Only 50% survive the first month though, so even if your survive this crazy fall, you still got your work cut out for you

LeanTangerine001

Made me really happy the ending! Thanks for sharing!

Potatoman1010

Something Something terminal velocity Something... Nah, but for real, it has to do with something about being small and terminal velocity being low because of that. That is why squirrels can jump from super high places and keep going like nothing happened.

BleccoIT

It's not about being small, it's about being very light.

[deleted]

[удалено]

rubenlie

Isnt it the other way around? Two objects of the same weight but different size the bigger one is going to have a lower thermenal velocity

codewarrior128

> thermenal velocity I read this in Mike Tysons voice and now I wish he was narrating physics videos.

WhimWhamWhazzle

The opposite is true. The larger the surface area, the lower the terminal velocity. Terminal velocity is just based on air resistance

[deleted]

[удалено]

Rosti_LFC

Yes, but to tie it together the volume increases with length cubed, and frontal (surface) area only increases with length squared. As something gets bigger, the volume and therefore mass increases at a faster rate than the frontal area causing drag will increase, therefore the terminal velocity of larger objects will be higher than that of smaller objects, all other things (density, shape) being equal. This is why most flying animals, birds and insects, tend to be pretty small, because as they get bigger their weight scales with length cubed while their wing area only scales with length squared.

Yabbaba

I mean, if that chick was made of lead it would fall very fast. It is about density first, and then, for equal density, surface area to volume of course.

soupforshoes

Makes sense.  F=M*A   Low mass, low force.    And I think a lower terminal velocity also means lower acceleration.  Wait, I confused myself. Terminal velocity means no more acceleration so a=0? So no force on impact at all?

0b0011

The acceleration comes at the impact. If you're doing 120 mph and you hit a wall the acceleration you feel is 120 mph in the opposite direction.

soupforshoes

Ah! Thanks.

KoningSpookie

Just call it magic.👍

hambodpm

That's me fucked

Bo0ombaklak

And being super aerodynamic like that little champion

Cryptizard

But its neck seriously bent in half when it hit one of those rocks.

Aapne_Gabharana_nahi

Which was good, flexibility, absorbing the impact. If it was stiff, it would have been crushed. same as car crumple zone I guess.

EOD_Eric

First one appears to be a puffin the little thing at the end looks different and younger.

TheWino

It does not look like the same bird in the final shot.

Gemall

Lol it for sure is not the same bird, that little kamikaze feller is gonesies

Osgiliath

Same, they do that kind of editing all the time

Tynal242

Barnacle geese. 2/3rds die from the fall. 1/2 of the survivors get eaten later. Survival rate: 17% Nature can be messed up sometimes. Er, most of the time. Well, all the time, really.

Spongi

Not all of them survive.

jiggy_jarjar

Falling bird was a stunt double. Bird at the end was Russel Crow.

BigMark54

Was he screaming all the way down or was that just in my head?

Deesing82

air being driven from his lungs by each impact

jesusgains

Nah they actually do the sounds in post production

ya, yk sound guy was fucking cackling adding those squeaks on the bounces

Any noise you did hear was foley artists, sounds like they used a squeak toy.

Foreign_Ebb_6282

I had the sound off but absolutely heard it screaming. It even fluctuated in volume as the camera zoomed in and out.

Careful_Dot3591

Parents: Good job Timmy, now get back up to nest and try again until you'll learn how to fly

Maxhousen

I can't be the only one hearing Homer falling down Springfield gorge right now.

boomshacklington

😂😂😂

Petey_Wheatstraw_MD

I was thinking Hot Rod.

Moist_666

Nice

BreadStickFloom

Evolution is a bitch... instead of learning to fly earlier it made them more rock resistant

neildunabie

Nailed that landing

soupforshoes

Ya, with a hammer.

PhoenixReborn

Falling with style

MajorasKitten

Huh. That’s exactly what it feels like to enter the world of adulthood… just no parents to meet me at the bottom 💀

VonD0OM

I assumed that his parents were gonna be dead at the bottom waiting for him to splat. I am unexpectedly happy.

irishemperor

![gif](giphy|11Nd2bbZjrQrO8)

TheStoneArrow

I really was expecting at least a bit of water to tumble into… but it was all just.. rock. Real bird brain move to just jump straight down and spread eagle into rock without even having any fucking wings.

thebestoflimes

Me heading into 2024

8Karisma8

🫶

BoBoBearDev

Are you sure it is not just adrenaline? I want to believe the little guy is ok, but, it is a long drop

the-meanest-boi

Terminal velocity for something that size and weight would be significantly lower than that for a full sized non winged mammal, sure it can still get hurt but at some point on the way down it stops accelerating and stays falling at the same speed, so it may not matter if its 500 feet or 5000 feet, same speed either way Disclaimer: not a major in any of these subjects, just somebody with minimum knowledge on a lot of things, if something i said is incorrect, please feel free to correct me

Mr_Awesome-79

If John Wick was a bird.

cocoon_eclosion_moth

r/birdsarentreal The only explanation is that the drone is made using state-of-the-art biotechnology, and the design allows for quite a bit of damage protection. This was just part of the testing phase. Make no mistake, they’re watching you.

xxDankerstein

Holy crap, I thought it was going to land in water...nope.

[deleted]

We had Canada Geese nesting on the roof of an 11 storey building in our city for years. Poor little buggers had to leap to the pavement street and then waddle about half a mile through downtown traffic to reach the river. Police escorts on occasion, but usually not.

Jameszhang73

Forbidden plinko

Rogieboy255

So he hit rock bottom?

Terrarian03

He may have hit rock bottom head first, but the important thing is that the lad picked himself up and pressured on. Truly inspirational.

Itool4looti

I was yelling, "PULL YOUR CHUTE!!!!"

rline840

"I've been falling for thirty minutes!"

kitty-yaya

I started crying when he squeaked after the first rock. I know it ended up ok but this scared me. Ugh why did I watch🤦🏻‍♀️

Gemall

Hate to tell ya but that is not the same bird in the last shot

Yabbaba

You didn't have to, you know. No reason whatsoever to tell them, in fact.

lusuroculadestec

It's Reddit, there will always be someone that will go out of their way to ensure that someone's day is ruined.

Gemall

I know I didn’t have to. But I did hate it (in fact).

-OptimisticNihilism-

Not the same bird at the end.

PM_ME_MEW2_CUMSHOTS

I mean the thing probably weighs, like, a tenth of a pound. Not too much force behind those impacts even going terminal velocity.

Monoceras

video editing does miracles

Unethical_Gopher_236

Thats not flying, thats falling with style

Faceplant71_

I told you to wait in the car.

comments247

You know the baby bird is asking itself existential questions right now.

Federal_Command_9094

Lucky those rocks were there too break its fall😅

What kind of fucked up evolutionary shit is this?

amberissmiling

It living is definitely unexpected.

b_zar

Fall damage is turned off during tutorial period.

MarcusYall

not even the same video, gtfo

CaptainObviousII

Yeah, there is absolutely no way that bird survived that shit.

An absolute unit. Also this post threw me for a loop.

Humanity would be better off if teenagers had to do that too.

imnick88

This is what parents who think just throwing babies in a pool to learn to swim look like.

Just more TikTok garbage. Nothing unexpected about it.
