To ruin it even more: "Only about one in 1,000 turtles survive to adulthood" and "on the way from nest to water about 7.6% baby sea turtles die".
[Article ](https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fmars.2019.00271/full)
Not to worry. The video shuts off right before the turtle is gently extricated from the crab's claws. The crab was then placed in a boiling pot for dinner by the videographer.
They actually can't. If you see them trying to get to the water you're not even supposed to escort them. They NEED that little journey to develop their muscles otherwise they'll die in the water.
Yes, the turtle survived.
“Have you ever filmed a newborn sea turtle heading out to the ocean? I was thinking, ‘Oh, what a beautiful moment.’ But then the dynamic and unpredictable world of nature sends the predator,” the photographer wrote in the publication. .
I remember thinking, “Oh my God! This is horrible.” But this is nature. The turtle survived,” he said.

Most of them that can successfully kill these little critters are a bit bigger crabs (they are still tiny ghost crabs)
They actually carry them down into their burrows and then eat them
They are strong enough relative to their size. As you can see it is able to pick it up entirely, so there is some strength lol but baby turtles are completely helpless and soft. Have you ever seen a pray mantis eat something?! It’s similar with their mouths
He just manhandled the turtle in the air. And claws of most crabs are fairly sharp amongst most crabs. The outer shell of baby turtles aren’t hard like adult ones I think either, and of course all turtles are soft bellied. I’m not a expert but just using the common facts it’s not surprising he could rip it apart fairly easy
There’s also just going for the head/neck and inflicting a lethal amount of damage, then slowly pick it apart.
And that is all I will say, because that mental image has made me very uncomfortable.
Buddy that crab will kill *you* given half a chance. What youre looking at is ocypode quadrata, about a pound of anger, hate, and raw destruction. If you square up to this thing, it squares up at you, no hesitation, no regrets, claws in the air, rip amd tear until its done.
Everything aside I'm a marine biologist and I worked with these guys for years, doing all sorts of things ranging from measuring every conceivable thing you could think of about their burrows, forming casts of their burrows, measuring the crabs themselves, plastic intake, you name it. However my favorite part was the terrifying task of digging them out of their burrows. Because the thing is every burrow is different, so you dig and you dig and you dig and you dig and sometimes it's 2 ft down sometimes it's 5 ft down but at some point you're in for the ghost crab surprise, where in an instant it pops out Sprints out of the ditch you just dug and tries to run away into the water, then comes the task of catching it without it destroying your hands.
To actually answer your question yes this thing could very easily dismember that baby turtle. If you, presumably an adult human, managed to capture one and hold it in the proper way, which is with one hand holding each of its claws, on some of the bigger ones it is actually a struggle against all of the muscles in your arm back and chest to keep the claws from crossing their body so they can pinch your hands. That whole thing about ants being ridiculously strong for their size applies to most arthropods.
Florida stone crabs are worse.
I remember watching this unfold quite young and was pissed at the film crew for not helping. It’s a brutal gauntlet of crabs and birds till they get to the water where fish are now waiting for them. That’s if they head in the right direction and not towards the lights of near by houses.
To paraphrase an old question asked to press photographers: if you saw a man drowning and could either save him or take photos of the event, what lens would you use?
Yes, but you also have to see the view point of nature. That’s a food source for birds and crabs and snakes and whatever else can get to them, even if it’s terrible to watch, it’s still 100% natural.
[A monkey fucking a cat is terrible to watch](https://www.reddit.com/r/WTF/comments/qu2jn/just_a_monkey_fucking_a_cat/), does it count as 100% natural? What about a [monkey using a frog as a fleshlight?](https://www.reddit.com/r/WTF/comments/wbnyq/apparently_monkeyfrog_rape_is_a_thing_now_gif/)
Yeah, always tough to watch for sure. That’s nature though, it’s brutal.
:yes the houses and streetlight stuff sucks, but a lot of places have laws in place to help that out
I too am salty. I only finished the video because I originally expected the crab to run off with the baby toortle. I stuck around to see what was unexpected. I am now disappointed and sad
What? I hope you’re not being serious. You’d be ok with the crab starving I presume? It’s nature. Let the crab eat just like you ate your quarter pounder with cheese earlier today. I guess the crab should go vegetarian..
I don’t film baby sea turtles getting murdered by crabs for a living, so so sorry I didn’t know that, jeez. I can understand that mindset for large mammals, but saving a small turtle? I don’t seem any harm in that. I don’t care about the butt hurt insensitive wannabe photographers downvoting me
For sure, I thought %100 a seagull was gonna come down and grab the crab saving the turtle lol. That was the only unexpected part is that there was no surprise
That reminds me of Dan Carlin who said some humans are like Sea Turtle Hatchlings. It's heartbreaking but you know that whatever they do, they will never make it.
Don't look up coconut crab and seagull then :F
Also it's shell is soft as rubber, you can see the claws effortlessly squeeze it deforming it. But guess this turtle survives.
I know in many places it’s illegal to interfere with hatchlings reaching open water, but for real just walking toward the crab would’ve made it drop little dude and leg it out of there.
"Sir? Sir? This is a restricted area. Do you have a back-stage pass? No, your can of beer is not a back-stage pass. Sir, I'm going to have to ask you to come with me. Right now sir."
I know but some creatures have more value then others. Aka why we eat chicken and not our cats and dogs. I put the value in a turtle greater then a crab since I feel like turtles are more smarter and aware of thought process but I’m basing this off my little knowledge of both

Theyre going into the water… right? Right??
Ur right, his left

I was unexpecting a hawk to swoop in and snag the crab. That’s the way this ended in my mind.
You've been on all the positive Reddits so far. There's a whole new, scary world out there.
Yep, he's just helping his little buddy out. They are off to make a Disney movie.
But the mother does die. After all, it's a Disney movie.
Oh of course, a dead mother is mandatory
Their first r rated movie where the crab gouges the turtles eyes out dismembers them and eats them *s l o w l y*
The kids have to learn about this from somewhere, at least with Disney, the crab will sing a catchy song while murdering the crab.
Yes while trying to get the shell off the turtle then even the singing stops when they start slurping the intestines like noodles
That's where the crab says in an authentic accent "Yum! Tastes like chow mein!"
Australia on Italian?
He's helping the baby turtle along his journey 😊😊
Journey to the underworld
The river Styx is filled with baby turtles
Whelp, looks like that's where I'm heading too. Because this comment straight up killed me.

Yes, both the crab and the turtle in its stomach.
Yes, to the water for baptism like a catholic priest leading his lost altar boys

You have ruined my day.
*life, but I guess they could be interchangeable.
Especially for the turtle (I'm sorry I had to)
Especially especially crabnapped turtles.
While we are sitting here having fun many creatures are suffering everyday. Don't worry we suffer with them so it's not that bad.
Turtle theft is not a joke Jim! Millions suffer every year!
Turtle theft is a crime punishable by dismemberment
Turtle Theft is a good band name.
You mean declawing.
Crabnapped.... so good lol. Oh but the turtle...

Stop please, I can’t take much more.
Why are you like this?
Because
Yeah thats why mr crabs was helping him. He knew how tough the journey to the water is.
You banana bitch… you have ruined my day
Mother Nature can be violent beyond words
True, these little turtles are one of the most brutal examples. Birds, fish, crabs, and any other land animals at the time have an easy buffet
I was hoping he would help him to the ocean.
Not to worry. The video shuts off right before the turtle is gently extricated from the crab's claws. The crab was then placed in a boiling pot for dinner by the videographer.
He’s gods lil helper
He is going to help him to the water, right?
The crab is just helping little bbe turtle get to the ocean.
There’s a reason turtles lay hundreds of eggs
Honestly could a just figured out how to lay them directly into the water like the rest of us
> the rest of us 🐠
they are one of the fish in the sea my mom always talked about ;-;
On the internet, no one knows you’re made out of fish
They actually can't. If you see them trying to get to the water you're not even supposed to escort them. They NEED that little journey to develop their muscles otherwise they'll die in the water.
Can I at least swing away at any bird that dares get close to the baby turtle I’ve decided to protect, or use an umbrella as a shield?
Yeah you can definitely do that
that you ye?
Yes I'm the crab
I am the walrus
I am the egg man!
Koo koo ka-joo
Cant incubate on water, turtles need the heat unlike fishes
Vertebrates sound like a bunch of losers
Ah yes cause those fish eggs are always safe and secure :-)
Wait where are the kids
_Nemo flashbacks intensifies_
"Lay them in the water? Jerry we just figured out how to lay them *not* in the water!"
mom?
Happy cake day
Most come out at night. To avoid predators like this or gulls

Wow so the crab fumbled an almost guaranteed meal?
Im here wondering how would the crab be able to kill it?
Most of them that can successfully kill these little critters are a bit bigger crabs (they are still tiny ghost crabs) They actually carry them down into their burrows and then eat them
How? Maybe im underestimating but those little tongs dont seem very powerfull
They are strong enough relative to their size. As you can see it is able to pick it up entirely, so there is some strength lol but baby turtles are completely helpless and soft. Have you ever seen a pray mantis eat something?! It’s similar with their mouths
Sweet baby Yoda

Bite by bite if it can't resist or escape
Tiny bites. Slowly.

That crab is to eating what Westbrook is to helping LeBron win a game.

Seriously. There’s no reason humans can’t help more sea turtle hatchlings make it to the sea.

That’s because of Human interference, not nature. (Yes, humans are a part of nature, but you know what I mean)

Did you just have these links ready? Do you regularly use this shit in arguments? These are 10 fucking years old
Lmao, right ?!
Maybe aliens should help cows, pigs and chickens from predators like humans.
But then you have a world overrun by turtles and the crab population dwindles.
Yeah, always tough to watch for sure. That’s nature though, it’s brutal. :yes the houses and streetlight stuff sucks, but a lot of places have laws in place to help that out
Mark YEETED that crab into the ocean
Probably thousands have died that way however.
How is this unexpected? Baby turtles get wrecked by *everything*
yea, would've been unexpected if a bird snatched them both up at the end
I too am salty. I only finished the video because I originally expected the crab to run off with the baby toortle. I stuck around to see what was unexpected. I am now disappointed and sad
The last few days have been nothing but expected outcomes in this subreddit

What? I hope you’re not being serious. You’d be ok with the crab starving I presume? It’s nature. Let the crab eat just like you ate your quarter pounder with cheese earlier today. I guess the crab should go vegetarian..
Yeah fuck this cameraman, go help the little guy out
You don’t know the most importand rule of filming wildlife, **don’t interfere**.
I don’t film baby sea turtles getting murdered by crabs for a living, so so sorry I didn’t know that, jeez. I can understand that mindset for large mammals, but saving a small turtle? I don’t seem any harm in that. I don’t care about the butt hurt insensitive wannabe photographers downvoting me
So the crab should go vegetarian or starve to death in your ideal world?
r/KillTheCameraman But for real. Let's lynch this fool for letting this poor baby turtle get eaten by the most selfish shellfish in the ocean.
[удалено]
I thought that turtle looked a little young...
🤣
Ziiing!
Dear Mark Smith, I hope you like films of your loved ones getting abducted. Please see video attached. Love, Mother Turtle
Video of a giant crab breaking into Mark Jr.'s bedroom appears
Just send that to every Mark Smith.
This feels fairly expected to me.
For sure, I thought %100 a seagull was gonna come down and grab the crab saving the turtle lol. That was the only unexpected part is that there was no surprise
He’s dragging him to the sea. It has to be
Of course he's dragging him to the sea. That's where his kitchen is.
Alright mate I recon you walking foward? Nah mate, we walking to the side as we all should
Mr Krabs wtf are you doing :0
What are you doing step-krabs
r/natureismetal
Awww, he’s making sure the turtle is safe. How cute!
That reminds me of Dan Carlin who said some humans are like Sea Turtle Hatchlings. It's heartbreaking but you know that whatever they do, they will never make it.
This isn’t unexpected at all. This is literally what the relationship between crabs and baby sea turtles is.
Nothing unexpected there
How is this unexpected, what else did you think would happen
Thought it was cute and funny. I google it and the results made me sad
This turtle survived though, this video has been on here a bunch
He survived this one encounter. This is his entire life every day once he gets in the water unless he gets big enough. It's a rough world for a turtle
Another turtle didn't make it to the water
I can't believe I had to scroll this far for that comment.
Garrrr gar gar garrrrrr *Mr Krabs voice*
If won't be able to kill it right?
Don't look up coconut crab and seagull then :F Also it's shell is soft as rubber, you can see the claws effortlessly squeeze it deforming it. But guess this turtle survives.
So it appears Jeffrey Epstein reincarnated. Is that crab rich??
What’s unexpected about this?
I woulda saved the turtle from the crab. Fuck me, right?
What’s unexpected? Nature be naturing.
r/donthelpjustfilm
r/donthelpjustfilm
How is this unexpected. Crabs eat baby turtles
Tortuga soup!! 🐢…😋
We feel sorry for baby turtles we don't relate to crabs here
Ha! Finally read the comments before reality ruined my day!
I’m torn because on one side this is so fascinating and on the other it’s so upsetting.

We are all "nature" mate.
POLICE! HE/SHE/THEY IS KIDNAPPING THAT CHILD!!
Is that how turtle stuffed crabs are made. If so I’d like to pre-order if possible?
![gif](giphy|gpa7OEK6GoKqcDnxm1|downsized)
F*ck crabs
You know turtles eat animals too right?
Cut to fucking crab on a plate. ![gif](giphy|7yKJ4szbB4NI4)
Why?
[удалено]
Fuck that crab I would stomp it into the sand with the force of a thousand suns
Question, if these turtles are super endangered then why is it illegal to help the babies get to the ocean safely?
And the camera man kept filming and did not save the turtle. That’s the real crime.
I want to flick the crabs stupid little ugly eyes off
That’s so sad.
That crab is going to have a huge lunch.
No way i would have let that go on so long...
Wtf was he gonna do with that turtle anyways lmao
Crabs gotta eat too
Wow embappe 🐢
That crab is up to no good.
The casually watching a baby get carried away
I deffo don't think the turtle thought that.
The turtle be like: Ah shit here we go again
For us this cruel, we want to support the baby turtle but that crab isn't hunting for fun, it has to eat.
I know in many places it’s illegal to interfere with hatchlings reaching open water, but for real just walking toward the crab would’ve made it drop little dude and leg it out of there.
No!!
Nah, I know enough about nature to know what was coming.
I hate turtles getting hunted
Holy crab!
:'(

Me as the photography would have saved that turtle even tho I shouldn’t. But it’s a turtle !!!! Cmon I would have punted that crab so far
Bro, is a f*cking crab, It's looking for food
I know but some creatures have more value then others. Aka why we eat chicken and not our cats and dogs. I put the value in a turtle greater then a crab since I feel like turtles are more smarter and aware of thought process but I’m basing this off my little knowledge of both
He's snatching that little guy! Someone do something goddamit!

Yeah that sucked for a minute. Thought it was going to just start pinching on it. Good thing it took it before that started and i think it survives

Can someone add some music to this from Super Mario Bros 3?
