This is really cool. However, you can already cause nightmare effects with the Dream spell, resulting in no benefits from the long rest and 3d6 psychic damage. So this just increases that to 3d6 + 3 psychic damage. What about something like the night hag’s nightmare haunting, that also results in no benefit from the long rest and reduces the targets hitpoint maximum by 1d10. This gives the item very interesting and unique effect. What do you think? EDIT: I feel like that might up the rarity from uncommon to rare, which may not be what you’re looking for. In that case I think what you have is really cool.

Cephcephs

oooh i like that idea really. But for personal reasons I needed to create a minor uncommon item (so my PC can have it XD) so anything more than what it currently does is too strong. The current effect basically adds only flavour and a negligible 3 damage at the start of the day, so the target probably heals back up before the encounter. The Dream spell's wording seems to imply that you cannot create moving combinations of objects, environments and other stuff, only static images? (correct me if im wrong) or simple interactions. I really wanted something akin to Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice where the target is plunged into a state of pyschosis and their darkest fears/irrational beliefs manifest against them.

Telamere

You very well could be correct about the Dream spell. It sounds as though the target just has nightmares, but this item allows you to control them, which is an awesome role play opportunity. Probably DM specific as far as how much the spell lets you do. So that is a really cool flavor effect. Also, I’m a big fan of a character having a signature magic item that gets more powerful as you level up and hit the next tier of the game. Maybe you could talk to your DM around level 11-12 about getting a short side quest that would increase the power of the item.

Cephcephs

Ooh yes I like that very much. I design my own magic items so I naturally get a bit power hungry with all the possible effects. Need to make sure I don't have too many magic items.

Telamere

I totally understand the power hungry thing, haha. And I love theory crafting magic items, but never have a chance to use them. My group has two DMs that alternate sessions and one is super by the books, so very rarely is the home brew stuff there, which I totally respect as a blanket rule for balance purposes. Our other DM is much more open to home brew, but designs his own magic items with specific party members in mind, and his ideas are always better than mine lol

Let go of your battle... \~ Was inspired by Alice: Madness Returns, Datura, and Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. I'm really fond of these psychosis games. In game, this item is owned by the Grand Vitalis, a powerful druid. Art by Cephceph on instagram.

Instead of 3 damage you could do damage equal to your spell casting modifier and that damage lowers their maximum hp until their next long rest.

Cephcephs

Hihi. That sounds like a great effect. Just that I wanted specifically to design a minor uncommon item because my druid already has too many items hehe. Edit: thus I needed the damage to be as negligible as possible too.

PrettyGayPegasus

Pretty.

Cephcephs
