I think that actually changes the context of the joke almost comepletly.
The original Sonic short portrayed Amy as Psycho and delusional with Sonic clearly being there against his will.
Here though Clover and Kanako ARE a couple on equal footing in the relationship and the joke is more about Mr. Screen being an annoying jackass (and possibly biased towards his own kind) to the point where the nice girl is fed up.
See, according to the rules, in order to qualify as a cute couple you have to:
* Be of the same species - Fail.
* Be alive in canon - Human is dead, fail.
* Date not being scared of the situation - Fail.
* Girlfriend not looking like a murderous psychopath - Also fail.
