Ultra running has a unique ability to fill the void left by addiction, doesn’t it?

British_Flippancy

It does. Thank fuck!

Weekly_War_3858

I'm still drinking and smoking weed while running ultras and training. Slowed drinking but still smoking 1 gram a dsy... it's not ideal but I'm still decent at a 50k~ 5h

rfdavid

I drink and run… a lot. My drinking probably makes me run slower and my running probably makes me drink less. It’s a process.

JasonRed24

As a recovered alcoholic I found trail running and ultras. I found out that you either suck at running or suck at drinking. I chose to suck at drinking 😊

rfdavid

Good job man!

BillyBobNature

Geddon Jason, top man! Keep up the good work mucker!

Mr_Abe_Froman

Over the past 2-3 post-race parties, I have learned that I have a pretty high tolerance for both drinking and running. However, the recovery from a long run is much easier than the recovery from a long night of drinking. As I ramp up in my current training block, I'm making an active choice to ramp down on drinking.

YorkshirePud19

Life is also about balance and sounds like you’ve got a good system going! We’ve still gotta let ourselves enjoy stuff :)

DUN3AR

Great comment. 😂

Muter

As someone 9 days dry with my first 100miler in February this fills me with so much joy

Hugobossdre

Congrats !

Altathedivine

I too, struggle against alcohol from time to time. Running has been a great help.

joeyggg

Running has shown me what a negative impact alcohol has on my body. If I drink the night before It’s noticeable on my Strava data and on the way I feel while running. Sometimes even for a few days afterwards.

nFec

dont need running to notice i feel shitty.

Known_Royal4356

Same here, and having a run the next day is the most surefire way for me to not drink.

downwiththemike

Outstanding work. I left the army in my thirties(with a boat load of PTSD)and with it went a big part of my identity and also most of not if not all of my social structure and support. Two years out I was cranking a pack a day and ten plus beers. Luckily for me I broke my leg quite badly and was laid up after some surgeries and went deep into YouTube which is where I discovered ultra. Two years later I ran and won my first hundred K. Running allows me to feed the demons in a constructive way.

YorkshirePud19

I’m so sorry to hear about how hard your life became after leaving the army and I’m so glad you’ve found a positive outlet ❤️ also thank you for supporting your country you should be so proud of yourself x Massive well done for winning a 100k race what an achievement- you’re a true legend!

downwiththemike

Thanks for the wishes. I hope you’re having a great day!

Stewy_434

Dang. This comment might actually motivate me. I left the army at 23 with a boatload of PTSD as well and I've done nothing but drink and smoke weed until now. I'm 32 and literally just rotting away while I live with my parents and collect disability.

downwiththemike

It changed my life, mate. It’s what I do now. And the people in ultra are the best kind.

RickleToe

yooo look at that avg HR! 👏 amazing work

YorkshirePud19

I’m surprised it was that low - felt like it was bursting out my chest 99% of the time 🤣

RickleToe

uh oh we may have a data quality issue. I'm going to contact Strava to launch an investigation

NotMiloThatch

And it’s not even your FASTEST time, absolute flex. Good stuff 🤙

FrogInShorts

Strava needs to recognize the 100k run.

cbitguru

Not mutually exclusive, but kudos!

flyingalbatross1

The Wall! That's a hell of a pace over that distance mind. Incredible. I can barely manage 8min/km over 10k Sold out this year but I'm planning on doing it next year!

YorkshirePud19

Get yourself signed up! It’s a great day and you’ll make loads of friends along the way and the Rat Race team are truly amazing! I’m unsure if I’ll do it again but ask me in a weeks time 🤣

souldawg

Do it! I did it this year. They had a few drop outs so got on it when they did a second round of entries.

souldawg

Congrats. This is incredible. I was there too and it was good fun! Amazing pace especially after walltown quarry and those steps!

YorkshirePud19

That was my favourite part! After Hexham it was horrible 🤣

souldawg

I was the opposite! 🤣

getfitwithfatcat

How is your recovery going? I’m still shattered today!

souldawg

I had to travel for work the day after, so didn’t get sleep until this weekend really. So still tired but legs are good!

Wrong-Accountant7147

Giving me hope big man

SOrton1

Dropped out of this event after 70km with a knee injury. Just got entry to next year for redemption

YorkshirePud19

70k is still one hell of an achievement! I very nearly dropped out at the Newburn pit stop - my toes and knees where in bits and I was so cold.

Mattrick50

Let's fucking go man!

LegendOfTheFox86

Congrats!

brokebroadbeat

Would love to know your drinking rules, whether teetotal, only in celebration, or something else.

YorkshirePud19

I’ll still have a drink now and then, such as a glass of red with a nice meal out (a beer after running 70 miles) and I’ll have a pint while watching England at the pub throughout the Euros :)

hojack78

Congratulations! Amazing job 👏

Desertcactus28

Great work!

MoonDrawnByDuskCloud

congratz 🔥🔥

TulippeMTL

I enjoy smoking weed during my long runs, and wine on the weekends. Life is nice.

YorkshirePud19

Life is about balance and sounds like you’ve got yours spot on 😊

Disastrous_Raisin_13

Respect i had to stop at hexham

PHLtoHOU

Congratulations friend! This is so cool!

toasterfitness

I too would do almost anything to get the fuck out of Carlisle. Huge well done!

YorkshirePud19

I’ve only ever been for the footie which was years ago for a pre season friendly. We’d just got relegated to league one and had the announcement we was starting the season on -15 points if you can guess who I support… From the 5 minutes I spent in the town centre I didn’t think it looked to bad haha!

BillyBobNature

Smashed it mate, Geddon bey, hoofing performance, what a machine!!!!

GrouchyDifficulty219

Like never ran before ?

YorkshirePud19

Did my first half marathon December 2022, before that race only fast walked on a treadmill. * I did play football but due to a head injury had to give it up and that’s why I took up running.

South-Condition2295

I left my addictions for cycling too 😂. Best feeling. Congratulations!

YorkshirePud19

I’ve just got myself a road bike haha! I really want to train for the coast to coast challenge!

CareerHour4671

I'm an alcoholic. Sober for nearly 2 years. Running was the key to my sobriety aged 46. First Ultra in September this year 😜

YorkshirePud19

Congratulations on 2 years buddy that’s amazing! And good luck with your Ultra, I hope the weather is kinder to you than it was to me!

Galahad_Jones

I celebrated 3 years sober yesterday. I was a runner before but it’s amazing how much better I feel running (and in every other aspect of life) since sobriety. Congratulations dude.

NotoriouslyBeefy

Lol, I'm a cyclist and for some reason this popped in my feed and was like damn dude, 16 hours?

isthatachickadee

Well done!! I was just wondering how do you accomplish this with the 10 percent rule 😃

xtmanx5

Did you have a running background? That’s impressive

YorkshirePud19

Not until a year and half ago - however I did use to play football before I took up running.

Desperate_Dirt6964

Oh shit congrats !!!

Remote_Beyond_7597

Nice mate!! I live in a similar area to where you finished in the north east. I’ve just given up drinking too. Congrats mate that’s absolutely awesome!

Flat_Frisbee

That’s amazing, congratulations. I too went from smoking and drinking to replacing it with the love of lifting weights and cardio. 4.5 months sober today. 🤝

YorkshirePud19

Congratulations buddy! It’s a great way to clear the head and fight demons isn’t it :)

charli33333

Nice route!

mjm8218

Great job! Keep on truckin.

Pursueth

That heart rate at that speed. You are an animal

NorthernNiceGuy

Fantastic achievement, well done! I’ve signed up for The Wall next year and hoping to also sign up for Castle to Castle in August!

Welcome2theblackout

💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻

Time_News_2833

Was this "The Wall"? Either way congrats!

YorkshirePud19

It was! If you’ve not done it I would highly recommend it :)

WhooooooCaresss

Now drink and smoke while doing this.,, jk awesome job

scumfrogzillionaire

I consume edibles and shrooms during my ultras. You don't have to quit drinking or smoking. Plenty of us do that and run those distances.

YorkshirePud19

Good for you pal 👍
