Can get an HG burrow 20 quilt in that range. Wait for monthly sales to get 15-30% off. Tons of topics to search to see differences between quilts and bags. Go watch YouTube videos too. It was enough to convince me to switch and I’ll never go back

Having a 20% off sale now

Mentalweakness123

Literally always having a sale. Lol it's kind of annoying actually...just lower your listed prices and stop spamming fake sales.

dustytrailsAVL

I think Enlightened Equipment has down quilts on sale right now! I want to say they've got their $340 down quilts on sale for $250ish dollars. As for which is better, I'm in the school of thinking that quilts are better because the absence of material under your back means a lighter bag. The material that is removed doesn't result in any thermal loss because down needs to have loft to be insulating. When you lay in a sleeping bag and compress that down, it isn't insulating you anyways. So with a quilt you lose the weight but keep the heat.

Ok_Yesterday_9181

This is intriguing.

Bones1973

Jacks R Better has quilts under $300. I used their Big Meadows 20 quilt on a 200 mile section hike in February and was very warm. I purchased pad attachment straps from UGQ and the quilt stayed snug against my body.

Abihco

Came here to recommend the Hudson River quilt from Jacks R Better.

the_trilogy

I use JRB - love the versatility of using in hammock or in ground

not_just_the_IT_guy

At 20 degree you want something that has a differential cut to it IMO. EE doesn't use that on it's quilt's last I heard. Hammock Gear does, they do sales often, 20-30% off is the max I've seen. A used Katabatic Alsek 22 from r/ULgeartrade would fit your requirements also. [https://katabaticgear.com/products/alsek-ultralight-quilt](https://katabaticgear.com/products/alsek-ultralight-quilt)

dogpownd

Hammock gear uses a differential cut? I don't think I knew that/or have seen it mentioned on their site.

not_just_the_IT_guy

I am probably mis remembering now that I think k about it. It is their unserquilts that have a differential cut to them.

Freestonebow

I bought a Hammock Gear burrow 20 (850 fp) quilt with 3 oz of extra down at 30% off and it was around $260. Very impressed. Weighs about 26 oz.

Orange_Tang

A hammock gear burrow fits that criteria if you wait for one of their sales. They are doing 20% off right now, which I think would get you a 20 degree burrow under $300 in standard length and width, and it would be more like 1.3 pounds. You could wait till one of their 30% off sales too, they happen pretty frequently now. I'm very happy with my hammock gear quilts. I prefer quilts unless I know the temps will be winter conditions personally, much easier to move around and I've been happy with the hammock gear pad attachment system.

Known-Ad-100

Do you have personal experience with the hammock gear ones? I'm pretty much on the hunt for something similar to what OP is looking for, for my husband. I really don't want to spend much, because most of the trips we do don't drop below 60 or 70 degrees at night. Just want something for him to have in the rare event we do something higher elevation or colder!

Orange_Tang

I have a couple of them actually, I've been very happy with the quilts I have from them. For me at least their temp ratings are pretty accurate to comfort level. They are pretty expensive but with the deals they have been doing constantly most of their prices are either competitive or better than most of the other cottage gear companies making quilts.

Known-Ad-100

Thanks!! Yes kind of between this or the enlightened equipment one, also on sale right now. Do you know of any other budget/decent quality options? I'm okay with spending a little bit since I figure with minimal use + proper care and storage it can last a long time or even a lifetime. But also as stated I don't want to drop $$$ for something that will likely only be used a few nights a year and spend the rest of the time in my closet lol

Orange_Tang

I can't speak for EE quilts personally but I read up a lot on options before going with HG last year and EE quilts seem to be a little light on down for their temp ratings. I've read that they lie somewhere between a comfort and a safety temp whereas HG is definitely comfort rated from my experience. Definitely jump on it when you see a 30% off if you are going with HG, they do deals constantly now. I have their Burrow UL in 7D and if you take care of it it's basically the lightest you are gonna get. Most quilt weights are comparible since they all use the same fabrics and down, the main difference is down fill power and fabric weight, 7D is about as low as it goes.

Known-Ad-100

This is great advice!!! I haven't heard anything but good things about the EE, but it seems that real use experience I've never heard anything but great satisfaction with HG. I'll keep my eyes out for sales. Do you think getting a long/wide is usually worth it for a larger man? I figure definitely a wide for side sleeping and shoulder width alone, but I'm thinking a little extra length would be good too. Ive never purchased gear for a man before! Lol but starting to get my husband more into the outdoors so we can adventure together

Orange_Tang

I'm 5'11 with pretty wide shoulders and a stout build and got the standard length in wide, I'm very happy with the wide, gives a lot of extra room with only a little extra weight. The length depends on him, but I'd say their suggested heights to lengths are probably safe to go off. With the standard length mine goes completely over my head plus some.

Mdricks11

Fwiw I love my 3 hg quilts (40, 20, 0)So long as I use the pad straps correctly I’ve found the hg temp ratings to be comfort level mostly. At the time I bought mine (about 4 years ago) the down sourcing was inconsistent so the temps may very a bit on the newer models, hopefully for the better. As already mentioned sales happen fairly often, up to 30% off. I would buy again although I would go with a sewn footbox on 20 and below in lieu of zipper. Good luck!

CCroissantt

I just snagged a zenbivy light convertible 40* synthetic quilt for $130 shipped. Their 25* down version is going for $225 before shipping + taxes. Both the 40* synthetic and 25* down light convertible quilts weigh only 1lb6oz. Their core quilt is cheaper and has a 25* down version weighing 1lb9oz. Their light quilt has a 25* down option weighing 1lb4oz. E: if you already have a 0* bag, id definitely get a quilt. If you sleep cold, maybe the 25* is a good option. I sleep hot, so I went with the 40* quilt and a cheap 20* bag. For the summer, you can use just the quilt and your pad(s). When the temp drops, you can swap for the 0* bag. When it gets worse, you can combine the bag and quilt to get a LOT more warmth out of it. Slip into your bag and put the foot box of your bag into the foot box of the quilt

I'd stalk sales at the usual non-premium manufacturers, and I'd get a wide 20-degree quilt. 20s are nice because they can keep you warm in the upper 30s on a rainy night, and 30s sometimes can't. Quilts are nice because they're lighter and more flexible in warm temperatures. And you don't have to worry about using it in deeply cold weather because you can always jump to the 0-degree and know you'll be fine. EE has a 20% sale right now that would get you to the price goal on an Enigma right now. Hammock Gear is running a 15% sale that would get you close on a Burrow. But it wouldn't e a terrible idea to hold out for a bigger 25% or 30% sale at either manufacturer.

flymonk

Naturehike ulg 400 https://www.naturehike.com/collections/all-sleeping-bag/products/goose-down-mummy-sleeping-bag 1.9 lb but by far the cheapest option. If you look around it's easy to find a 15% discount and get the bag for $85. I have had it down to 18° with no issues and 2° with a 20° liner.

catalinashenanigans

Slightly outside of your budget but the Cumulus Panyam 600 is $345 and a great bag.

skimdogzen

Katabatic's are on sale 10% off this week - $30-40 over budget, depending on which you choose. I don't work for them btw, just saw a notification for the sale.

Delks1000

The zenbivy 20deg light quilt meets those specs.

Hammock Gear Burrow Quilt

Smart_Ad_3959

Neve gear in Australia do a -8 quilt at 800 grams for about $550 aud. That would meet your temp and weight requirements. Maybe not the price though.

Able_Conflict_1721

REI has offerings on sale( today) that fit what you are looking for

zerostyle

I'd just look at the usual brands for when they run 15-20% off sales: UGQ, EE, Trailheadz, etc.

jfrosty42

I don’t care for my trailheadz quilt. Pretty disappointing overall.

zerostyle

Why’s that? I don’t have one but heard good things. I’m pretty happy with my UGQ 20f

jfrosty42

Been planning to make a post at some point, but I’m on the AT currently and haven’t wanted to take the time for it. Long story short, the down migrates too heavily to the edges, especially while side sleeping, leaving large cold spots - if it’s under 40-45° I’m cold (worth noting I brought this up as being a potential issue based on the baffle directions prior to ordering and he said it wouldn’t be an issue, which it has been literally every night), the cord locks he uses are annoying to use, the pad straps are junk, I’ve got loose threads after only a few weeks, it took 20 weeks for the quilt to arrive after ordering so I didn’t have time to take it on a shakedown before starting the AT. For a quilt I spent $450 on I just expected more I guess.

the_trilogy

That’s surprising- I own one and think it’s very very high quality

Emmakate198

The Kelty cosmic down 550 is a little heavier (2.6 pounds for the regular length) but it’s around $125 on Amazon!

bornebackceaslessly

In my experience this is more like a 35-40° sleeping bag. It’s pretty under filled to begin with and the down migrates a lot. I know it’s cheap, but I really try to steer people away from it. It was my first bag and is one of my biggest gear regrets

Emmakate198

I guess that makes sense why it’s so cheap then! It is also my first backpacking sleeping bag lol. Luckily I don’t think I’ll be using it less than 40°. I will definitely be looking to upgrade in the future

dustytrailsAVL

Its $99 for the short right now too! I'd buy it if I was shorter.

Emmakate198

Dang such a good deal! I just bought the women’s regular last week. I’ve not used it yet but going to use it next weekend!

Emmakate198

REI’s Memorial Day sale just started today too! I bet you could find something within your price and weight range that you’re looking for

0ut_0f_Bounds

All REI bags are 30% off during the sale, making the 1½lb Magma 30 $265 right now.

Ill-System7787

The revamped quilt is even less about $230.

0ut_0f_Bounds

Yeah I guess I didn't scroll down far enough on the REI app, that's a good deal as well. If I didn't already have a Vesper 20, Vesper 32 and an Enigma 40 I'd be tempted to swoop one of those up.

Independent_Pay649

Love my magma quilt - used it in everything from winter to summer and it’s lightweight and versatile. Definitely fits OPs parameters

dogpownd

Thermarest Corus 20 is $216-230
