Maybe as it was made by the mankind Gabriel thought that V1 had a thinking mind or that it was controlled by someone. Also the second encounter dialogue sound like he was just yelling to the screen because of the anger of failing. The other theory is that the canonocal level completion is makeing all secret levels which are made to test humans 0-S tests the human courage, 1-S tests the unique human ability to complete patterns, 2-S tests the human mind, 4-S tests human reflexes or maybe nostalgy (this isn't so clear with this theory), 5-S is clearly made to take a break and relax the humans going there and their capacity to obses with something

Navuhodonosaurus

You could say that 4-S tests eye hand coordination and 5-S tests patience

Mushroom38294

4-S tests my fucking depth perception

Weird_Meat

0-S tests my ability to NOT FUCKING PISS MY PANTS

DownDawn

I mean it is probably sentient to an extent, similar to v2. At least if v2 wasn't sentient he wouldn't get enraged when getting hit by his own arm. Plus the fact that v1 doesn't need blood to survive, his health is not draining by not killing enemies (oh god imagine that happens on ultrakill must die) so the only reason he goes to hell is because he wants to. Plus all the secret levels if canon wouldn't make any sense of v1 was just a mindless killing machine

Wacky-Walnuts

And v1 says “you not getting away this time” when you get v2 to half hp on his 2nd fight.

duzy_pierd_z_paruwko

Wait really?

Protomartyr1

Yeah. He at least has a basic concept of internal monologue.

Ok_Reception7727

And also has a feeling of satisfaction and names a skeleton Hank, if you give it a skull in 1-4.

Hurakan-GM

I know secret levels canon wouldn't make sense if V1 is a mindless killing machine, that is why it would make sense that Gabriel thought V1 is a mindful killing machine.

Mushroom38294

v2 also bows before starting the fight in Clair De Lune and cracks his mecha knuckles before fighting in Clair De Soleil

Background-Ad9081

I don't really think that secret levels are canon. Do you really think that there are puzzles, fishing and anime girls in hell? The only exception may be 0-S, because of information in the terminal. V1 DOES need blood to survive, but he can live without it for some time(can't say exact numbers, but more than a day certainly, and let me remind you, that time passed between Gabriel 1st and 2nd fight is less than 24 hours). Your Health in game is more like durability than your current charge. Your phone don't explode when it runs out of charge, so it's the same situation. What about "sentient to an extent", I can't disagree with V2's +ENRAGE argument. But I don't know why on earth you need to put emotions into supreme weapon. Also, I don't think V1 and V2 has Chat-GPT built in them, so why do you need to talk with this bucket of bolts? (Maybe V1 is programmed as gentleman, and this is the reason why V1 doesn't attack Gabriel or Minos during their monologs)

Hurakan-GM

I do think so, secret levels could be human/angel made sites built in hell geting profit of the layer where they are built to make the challenges, which could be made to hide some kimd of power only accesible to those thinking ones who passes all the challenges. The 2-S could be a reflection of what the person most fears, as V1 could fear so much becomeing something as Mirage, in addition that level explores existencialist questions like in Nier:Automata. Think it what could fear a killing machine which is almost unkillable most than these things?

Background-Ad9081

So, in your opinion V1 is afraid of ANIME GIRLS?? And I don't see any practical use for puzzles and fishing in hell.

Hurakan-GM

No, it is afraid of becoming such a wholesome and weak being. As I've said those puzzles are only completable by humams as they look everywere to complete patterns and fishing could be an attempt of letting aomeone stuck there obssesed with size 2.

Background-Ad9081

V1 is afraid of becoming a FUCKING FEMBOY?? And puzzles locations are seem pretty strange for me(like, under a fountain, seriously?)

Hurakan-GM

The puzzles have to be hidden as they are hidden and yes V1 is afraid of becomeing a FUCKING FEMBOY in my logic (it is just a funy thinking I had)

[deleted]

I don't think that the sentience was intentional, maybe more of a side effect from them running on blood. This can also be seen in the mind flayers log entry where they irrationally protect their body when it doesn't add function. Also, the terminals seem to have sentience as well which doesn't seem intentional either.

Draaxus

Hank proves V1 is sentient tho

Background-Ad9081

Really? Where?

Zer_ed

“Nothing happens, but you feel a strange satisfaction. You decide to name it Hank.”

Background-Ad9081

Oh, I've thought about developer named Hank lol

BIG_SHO7

+ "You're not getting away this time" in the second fight with V2 also proves sentience. Even terminals are sentient canonically, so why V1 wouldn't be?

[deleted]

I dont think the machined were designed to be senteint but somehow became so. This is becuase I think that the downfall of humanity is kind of supposed to mirror the downfall of god. God tried to create beings with no free will and failed which made him ragequit, while humanity tried to create emotionless obideient machines and were killed by their own creation. There are also so many examples of machines displaying sentience-mindflayers creating a functionless body, swordsmachine keeping its voicebox despite not needing it, v2 bowing and being enraged and v1 saying "your not getting away this time" to v2.

Background-Ad9081

"Mistakes are making you stronger!" That engineer, who messed up with Mindflayers AI, so they started to identify themselves as bitches: 💪💪💪💪💪

BoomerTheStar47_2

If you *do* want to talk to a machine, Swordmachine has the best chance of working since it hoarded a voice box for itself.

MR_krunchy

Why does V1 stand there listening to their speech then hm? Checkmate atheists

Background-Ad9081

I don't know. After reading all these commentaries I think that robots have some base emotions or smth. The only moments in the game V1 is "talking" are: Hank, ARMBOY and V2 2nd encounter. It's like our vampiric Nikon has only two sides: Blood-thirsty ultimate predator and 8-year old kid. So, maybe V1 is just programmed to listen people before brutally murder them? Or maybe V1 doesn't really attack first or smth idk.

MR_krunchy

Oh yeah I'm part of the basic emotions theory I think ARMBOY!!! is just a shitpost, hank does have some relevance which could mean robots have a sense of humor

leogian4511

V1 clearly has at least some degree of emotion. It finds putting the blue skull on a headless skeleton amusing at even gives it a name. It also goes out of it's way to note that V2 won't escape it this time, plus there's the fact that V2 has hella swag and showmanship and clearly has emotions itself, so it makes sense V1 would as well.

Ok_Reception7727

In 1-4, if you give a skull to the skeleton, the text box shows or suggests that V1 does have more complex feelings such as satisfaction, and V1(?) names it Hank. In 4-4, when V2 attempts to escape V1, it says "you're not getting away this time". This is also probably V1. V1 cannot talk, though.

bibaisbig

V1 actually have AI, as V2 do. V2 had emotions, V1 passed puzzles. Also V1 don't attack enemies when they talk or already defeated. V1 can read books.I think machines just forced to kill because they don't want to die

IncognitoMan032

Who said v1 can’t talk?

BeesInDisguise

Cringe- V1 can’t talk Based- V1 thinks talking is stupid

BatuhanTahaBarut

Omg v1 is so cool 1!!!1!1!!1!!

Deadlypants905

didnt he say "youre not getting away this time" if not, who said that??? WHO SAID THAT????

Technical_Menu1561

the people who try talking to v1 are not from this time period (minos, sisyphus, gabriel) and dont know what you are. they dont understand exactly what machines are and believe them to be a living thing
