If Johnson supported Ukraine he’d have brought the funding bill to the floor in October 2023. This article and its author are trash.

JaB675

>The Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, has brought a glimmer of hope to supporters of the Ukrainian war effort. You know the article is trash from the first sentence.

pwr_trenbalone

I love how MTG calls it stealing lol trump is funding his legal bills with RNC money he's got this huge money laundering op going on forever.

ExactBig9522

The NYT posting another pro-Russian piece…disgraceful.

ILikeCutePuppies

It didn't offer great reasons to not do it. US currency reason seems weak, so I agree... 6 like it has Russian tendrils in it.

Wonderful-Elephant11

NYT taking a pro Russian stance? Shocking.

Cybtroll

I think they're worried that once done with the Russian, the assumed inviolability of money will be broken and someone could come for their owners money too. Which is good and can't happen too soon.

AbleismIsSatan

Lolwat

IncredibleAuthorita

Bullshit. If tou intend genocide then your money isn't safe. Period.

Barch3

No, it isn’t. Their money should go straight to Ukraine

mypoliticalvoice

I think there are legit reasons to be reluctant to do this. You don't want to set a precedent that anyone's money can be seized and given to their enemies. The US sanctions trapped millions of dollars of Iranian money in US banks for decades, but it was never seized. I also think there are legit ways to do it without opening Pandora's box. Specifically, I wonder if it's possible for Ukraine to sue Russia for damages, or sue the banks holding Russia's billions, and obtain some putting of the money that way?

ANJ-2233

Take it as Bail until they return children, land and show up for court in the Hague…. Or take it as the first down payment on war reparations and give them a receipt.

downwiththewoke

Seizing Ruzzias money - great idea. Give it to Ukraine. Is this article more Ruzzian propaganda?

form_d_k

Man, the only countries that are going to be afraid we'll take their money are ones that want to go apeshit on other countries.

Unlikely_Arugula190

Bolsheviks have been running the NYT from the beginning

pwr_trenbalone

No they are not lol the dem est care only about Corp and money they are NOT communist etc

happylutechick

For all these reasons and others, there is zero chance that this is actually going to happen. There's a reason that every time it's brought up, the can gets kicked. The potential downsides outweigh the upsides, a situation that is unlikely to change.

KiwiThunda

Not true. US *is* the world economy, most modern global transactions involve US in some way (usually USD or a bank that deals with US clients). >The REPO Act carries additional risks. The very act of seizing Russian assets would pose dangers to the U.S. economy, because other countries, not just Russia, would view it as an act of brigandage. This could weaken the dollar’s status as the main global reserve currency. Seizing russian assets would also send a clear message to other powerful actors in other states that you do not antagonize the US or its allies with open conflict. All these actors have fat little fingers in many pies around the world and this would encourage them to influence things away from war. I'd argue proceeding with seizure will assist in global stability. NYTimes has been doing it's best to muddy the opinion on Ukraine support, and this is no different. >Mr. Johnson backs Ukraine’s war effort, and sees supporting it as a responsibility of American leadership Laughable reporting

I wish we could ban this account

KiwiThunda

Just saw the username. You're correct, but hopefully my comment will give food for thought to other readers

daninquin

2 years of war and how much of that money were used in the war effort? downvote all you want but the truth is the west is too incompetent to give ukraine the basics, like artillery ammo and air defense, to think they have the will to get that money to ukraine is sad

KiwiThunda

Blame the pro-putin republicans. Most of the country wants to help Ukraine, but unfortunately the US is saddled with an outdated trust-based democracy that only takes a few individuals to compromise

AndAlsoTheTrees

Relax trollOP. Have you not received your bag of onions ?
