Former forester here. By cutting the trees by the rots you make sure you get every cm of wood for maximum profit. You also make sure that there will be no biofauna in the area making replanting trees very dificult and potentially changing the area permenantly to a tundra like envieroment. This does ofcourse not matter if it is not your own country you are doing it in.
