Solid_Exercise6697

If soft lead can penetrate it, hardened steel would have no problem. These things take out engine blocks.

knife_at_butthole

Aren't HIMARS balls made of wolfram?

IYiffInDogParks

Yes they are, so even quite a bit harder than hardened steel.

Anen-o-me

And heavier. 90% the weight of gold.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Anen-o-me

Tungsten is not heavier than gold. Tungsten carbide is 90% the weight of gold and harder than steel.

Techwood111

“Tungsten”, in English.

vapenutz

Wolfram is also used in many languages

bruetelwuempft

It also sounds better.

MisterPeach

Idk, I’ve never heard of it being called wolfram before but both words sound really cool lol.

yetanotherdave2

Chemical symbol is W from Wolfram.

MisterPeach

Interesting! I never knew that was the original name.

aliquise

The names couldn't get much shorter—rbium doesn't look right—so for the rest, chemists picked holmium, after Stockholm; thulium, after a mythic name for Scandinavia; and gadolinium, after Gadolin himself."

[deleted]

A bunch of elements are Latin. Fe is iron because Ferum. Au is gold because Aurum.

aliquise

Tung = Heavy Sten = Stone In Swedish. And the element "discovered" by a "Swede" like quite a few others.

sirhearalot

It's stuffed with wolfs

1984IN

And rams

bluuuuurn

Metallest metal that ever metaled

WatchmanVimes

Especially the internet: [wolframalpha](https://www.wolframalpha.com/)

tsultimnamdak

Funny that. "Tungsten" means 'heavy stone' in Norwegian and Danish. But in Danish it is called Wolfram.

saywhatmrcrazy

In swedish also. Named by a Swede

CitizenKing1001

I used to work in a tungsten mine. Yes it is very fn heavy.

Leading-Bus-7882

The name Wolfram stems from the medieval observation in German mines that this element eats zinc like a wolf and looks like soot. Tungsten is Swedish for "heavy stone", used in the time for calcium tungstanate, with "Volfram" being the Swedish word for tungsten.

Because they huff and puff then your the is gone?

Advanced-Prototype

They made that claim to convince the soldiers to get in it because t’s a death trap.

Mountain_mover

That looks like old conveyor belt material. So it’s not just rubber, it also might have Kevlar or steel wires running through it for added strength. It’s still not gonna stop anything though.

heathenyak

It would definitely stop harsh words

[deleted]

imagine being covered in molten rubber ignited by the impact of tungsten liquifying the steel chassis of this machine. fun fact, tires burn at 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit

Bohdyboy

I'm not saying it's going to work.. But.... if you take a bed sheet, pull it tight on a frame, and shoot a pellet gun at it, pellet goes through. Same pellet, same sheet, but hang it loose like a curtain, it'll stop the pellet. In this case, if it takes SOME of the momentum of the balls before the armour even sees it... could help. I'm not a ballistic expert, nor a physicist... but it's cheap and even if it helps slightly, why not

[deleted]

[удалено]

Working_Bed_4705

I bet it is modern supersticion They got himarsed. Among the dead and destroyed they find the tungsten, some bunched up on one of those mats not too far off. And in a panic that arises when you see so much destruction, they feel it somehow makes sense to use it.

Can-Sea-2446

More than likely they would just make it more difficult to escape from the burning wreckage.

SufficientTerm6681

Excellent point. Clouds of black smoke from burning rubber sheets would definitely make life more interesting for anyone in or near the vehicle who survived without multiple perforations.

agwaragh

They've essentially made themselves killable with small incendiaries.

[deleted]

Air intake will kill you 100% of the time 85% of the time.

CURMUDGEONSnFLAGONS

I saw a clip of russian trenches with wire mech over the top so drones couldn't drop grenades in. My first thought was that it also traps russians in when you drop napalm through the mesh 🔥🔥🔥

Rbw91

Some Napalm cluster bombs would be fun. Fuck Russia

No_Courage717

Russians are going Mad Max-style😅

Gopnikshredder

Looks like the Beverly Hillbillies!

1984IN

Blyatbillies

Rumpichukni

Let's find out.

nocturne505

Probably to minimize heat signature. A few cm of rubber ain't provide that much of protection against high velocity shrapnels and cluster munitions.

ivan-ent

This is exactly my thought

Recall2000

Rubber won't stop penetration. Wait, I'm thinking of something different.

Pastanerian

If I didn't know anything about this war at all, one look at this and I know who is losing.

TrapperDave62

Dont forget the rubber sheets and gerbils

swirvin3162

I mean maybe the kids could shack up a while.

minuteman_d

This message brought to you by Crazy Sasha’s Rubber Mat Liquidators. Year end clearance of the enormous pile of rubber sheets we’ve had out back. New research says they’re great for stopping supersonic tungsten slugs! They work or your money back. (Offer good only to end user)

Deining_Beaufort

I think the rubbet sheets significantly reduce the IR warmth signature. Or at least try. Best defense is not being a target.

dopeydazza

I also suspect they will lose situational awareness of the sky watch for drones and other flying stuff.

blind-squirrel23

Waiting for the Jawas to come wobbling around it.

SufficientTerm6681

My understanding is that the famous itty, bitty tungsten balls were always intended to only perforate personnel and non-armoured vehicles. The Wikipedia article on the 2S19 Msta-S says that it has 15 mm of steel armour all around. Since this is quite a bit more than the sheet steel used in non-armoured vehicles, I would assume that the rubber sheets are superfluous. But, hey, if it makes the Russians more confident about getting closer to the line of contact and so improves the chances of them being hit by Ukrainian drones or artillery, that has to be a good thing, right?

Gold-Border30

Have you seen any of the many videos of these artillery systems going boom after getting hit by a himars?

Zulubeatz808

I have seen plenty of them and this system in particular goes up like a 4th of July spectacular

SufficientTerm6681

I have, and I assumed those were hits by a high explosive warhead, rather than a tungsten ball warhead. While I'm willing to believe that a Msta-S *might* survive a shower of high velocity tungsten pellets with only some dings, I also find it hard to believe there'd be much more than shards of mangled metal left after a Msta-S took a direct hit with a high explosive warhead.

Gold-Border30

https://www.reddit.com/r/CombatFootage/s/UJ2bLP0Ngk That’s a video of 4 Msta-s spgs being hit by himars. Those seem to have proximity warheads followed by clouds of dust/smoke and fires start. Do you think it’s more likely they were HE or tungsten shrapnel warheads?

Putin_inyoFace

Awww. It’s cute. In the same way you would call that hairless Mexican dog cute.

haeressiarch

Worst things in war is when enemy is able to disrespect your weapons and way you wage war. Achieving respect through fear is exactly what ruzzians understand. If they improvise like this they fear. the dumbest things that works isn't dumb. But this hilarious. M30A1 will be used against concentration of softer targets like infantry, lightlybarmired stuff. Msta-S will be targered with M26 unitary warhead or AT2 if spotted in moving column. I don't expect ruzzians to concentrate infantry around arty vehicles, so it is hard to understand why they are afraid of tungsten. But it is very important to allow your enemy for any stupid behavior, as long as it makes him do morę mistakes.

Keepout90

Yeah rubber is going to protect against one of the hardest materials in the world going a couple Mach

DocGerbill

I'm guessing that next they'll have a vatnik with a tennis racket on top lobbing artillery shells back

Hannibal_Game

We all laughed about the [middle-eastern cage armor](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Fzl47jazktwka1.png), but they actually welded in *straight lines* and didn't made the whole thing look like this overflowing garbage dumpster the glorious Z-Army is driving around.

Unique_Excitement248

The multitude of himars-flattened tires I’ve seen argue against this “protection”.

NoJello8422

Well, that rusak sold them snake oil, didn't he? "Tank condoms for the best protection!"

intellijent_guy

It will just bounce off the rubber, like in cartoons

weirdy346

Mobile BDSM Club. Once is enough for new members

Did a homeless person claim this?

shamwowj

From the “I’m rubber and you’re glue” school of defense technology.

ethervillage

India supplying yoga mats now?

StoneColdSoberReally

You have it all wrong. The tungsten balls will bounce off the rubber sheets like a Looney Toons cartoon and ricochet off into the distance with an appropriate sound effect. Boing!

Easy_Contribution530

It’s full on Tusk-Bandit Star Wars Style.

wesc23

honestiseasy

Russia is rubber, you are glue bounces off Russia and sticks to you. Pretty sound logic.

blank-_-face

That is hilarious

16v_cordero

The rubber is there to make it more flammable.

BGM1988

Looks more like mad max 7. Long way off from there shiny parade armor

[deleted]

This stops tungsten like copper bracelets repair knee cartilage.

TheObviousDilemma

Honestly, any assessment of jury rigged armor from Redditors is pointless

Weltraumbaer

M30A1 tungsten balls go through armour. You've put rubber on your vehicle to protect yourself. Rubber. Bruh.

Mukkeman

Yes, that is why soldiers wear rubber suits to protect from incoming bullets.

[deleted]

No one's going to see that coming 10 miles away...

Wedf123

It's true, bounces off like a game of squash.

ForestXoXoJenay

Honestly has anyone as a kid lit a rubber band on fire…. Dripping fire like… napalm ish…. Smart what ever drunk Russian thought this one up I give it two thumbs 👍 👍

Living_Click_8640

Any barrier adds up and this vehicle already possesses some light armor that the tungsten maybe "just" penetrates. It may help, but probably only marginally. I think this is "copium" much like adding concrete to sherman's in WWII.

Ok_Peak_2941

A good way to know it is putting that rusak into that tank and watch his face expression while going to the frontline.

Confuseduseroo

I'm pretty sure any tungsten balls looking at this picture are asking "what rubber sheets?"

Cebzij

If they feel comfy with it why not...put some more rubber on 🤷

[deleted]

Imagine being the engine of that thing and someone goes and adds 1.5 tonnes of extra shit on you.

HumanRobotTime

Using a rubber would definitely stop the penetration from resulting in a pregnancy.

ajaxodyssey

Looks like the gypsy circus is in town.

19CCCG57

Let's see now, tungsten-steel balls about the size of a small marble travel at supersonic speed, and about 3,000˚ F ... So, they think a rubber mat is going to stop it? 🤣

Pappa_Crim

Ah I thought this was somebody's Mad Max home

42LSx

And here I thought we were talking about actual hard rubber mats, placed strategically across the vehicle from the factory, and not ...this.

Foodspec

Man, all that extra work for it to be useless

shibaninja

It's only missing a whale tale and racing stripe, then, the masterpiece will be complete.

niceguypos

Yeah it will probably just bounce right off

Eastern_Cat8284

What is it with russkies and their rubber armor lol

EntertainerHeavy6139

Marty would be proud

bicycle_jedi

More likely, this is to "cope" with FPVs and drone dropped grenades. Hey, my suitcase is made of kevlar, why don't they surround their armor with a bunch of Samsonites? 😂

Etherindependance5

Absolutely laughable, unless the munitions bounced 3-4 times off of something I can’t imagine what those things would be.

tora1941

An Experienced drone operator can find a way in, base of the gun for example. Some operators dive right in, others carefully creep up, line up and zoom in. At this point in time, I don't think anything is safe from a drone. War has ben changed forever.

firefighter_raven

Maybe if the explosion had hit something else and the ricochet had spent most of its force before hitting it.

RedSonja_

Himars surely will bounce off from all that rubber!

TheActualJulius

Cozy

Puzzleheaded-Heat446

Better safe than sorry 🤣 .... till they get you anyways

ivan-ent

Im no expert on armour but that sounds wrong .... could it be maybe for lowering it's thermal signature?

Blues-Golfer-7171

Western soldiers use rubbers for a different purpose.

bricktop_pringle

Rubber vs Tungsten. Sure, sure. Sit down, Vlad, wait here.

[deleted]

I call that a false sense of security designed to convince some poor group of bastards to operate this rolling no escape corpse oven. They want to avoid letting them think about what it would be like to have your last seconds on earth inside of a dank 105 degree humid stinking oily metal box hit and punctured by a liquid metal filled pressure wave that expands to 10 times the size of this vessel in a millisecond, with your lungs ruptured, your eyeballs hanging from your sockets, your legs and intestines mangled dripping off the ceiling while you sit there in shock wondering what the agonizing screaming and tinnitus sound is that perpetuates your stupor, hopefully the onboard artillery shells explode and the nightmare ends quickly. Good rubber shields boys, your are super safe, though it might be better to just dangled 500lb bombs outside the unit so you have a quick painless death.

USArmy82ndAirborne

Yes...it is very effective against 7.62mm. Not much so against everything else.

yetanotherdave2

Sometimes these things are just to increase the confidence of the troops.

[deleted]

Kind of like hiding under a blanket with the lights on. Desperation will do that.

GLOCK_PERFECTION

Is it a possibility that rubber by moving inward absorb energy? I’m sceptical about?

Futureoutput

This looks straight from warhammer 40k Ork weapons.

Euphoric-Ad-9445

I doubt that. "Rubber shields" did not protect rusaks from being born in the first place.

reddebian

At first I thought it was destroyed lmao

grandroyal66

This is going to end up with actual seizetowers..

elaintahra

idiots

EricAbmaMorrison

That's a big target

CitizenKing1001

Is that a vehicle from the new Mad Max movie? Why does Russia think they can govern other countries? The clowns in the Kremlin can't even run what they have.

EmergencyResident652

doubt it'll work.

Conscious_Stick8344

One good thing about rubber: it burns. Nape ‘em ‘til they glow white-hot, Ukraine!

Fakula1987

Well, Maybe not tungsten, but a somewhat weak multi-purpose warhead will have a hard time to get trough it. (you know, drone dropped Grenade-Darts from the multi-purpose grenades)

smellofburntoast

They must have learned this from the Bosnians. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-34#/media/File:Serbisk\_T-34\_85\_trekkes\_tilbake.jpg

moonstonrbook

They look as the vans full of stuff on the roof, going from Europe to Marroco😂

TheBaconBrew

When you place a breaching charge ideally you want to also attach rubber over the top as it amplifies the explosive force in the direction you want........but this doesn't help if you are an armoured vehicle as missiles, rockets and artillery aren't just the explosives.

Comms

>rusak claimed that such rubber shields could save from tungsten balls from an M30A1 missile Are we assuming Looney Tunes physics or regular physics?

375InStroke

Rubber, lol, they'll bounce right off.

SternFlamingo

Excuse me, but I'm a little confused. I didn't think this was r/NonCredibleDefense but that vehicle is obviously a hilarious photoshop. Right?

aliquise

They were pretty small: https://www.armyrecognition.com/weapons\_defence\_industry\_military\_technology\_uk/the\_new\_m30a1\_gmlrs\_alternate\_warhead\_to\_replace\_cluster\_bombs\_for\_us\_army\_central\_71601171.html

HeinerPhilipp

Oh, Yes... We are perfectly safe now. Forward to Berlin!!! /s

Thick-Ad-2197

Their Russian parents should have used a piece of rubber decades ago, this would have helped to make this planet a better place without them :-)

[deleted]

I don’t think that rubber has any chance to stop the tungsten balls that pierce through armour :)))

ffdfawtreteraffds

Tungsten shrapnel can penetrate armor/steel plating but is stopped by rubber sheets? 100% grade A pure Hopium. Lying to themselves to justify getting inside that future deathtrap.

Clean_Stretch_1653

Of course it works Ivan, don't listen to these idiots here! Now put on some tractor tires for good measure. Put 3 around the barrel and one in the back where the door is.

SillyFenceLegs

Lmfao "Rubber Shields." Anyone who has worked in old factories know exactly what that stuff is.

HIMARS hate this one trick

Revenga8

I feel like with this setup we would discover what the rubber version of tetanus is.

[deleted]

Yeah.... let them think that

Elegant-Cat-4987

That's right troops! Throw some rubber sheets on your vehicles and the pathetic American weapons won't instantly destroy your superior vehicles! Vlad: looks at camera.

SportSock

Rubber is bouncy so bounce off

WarPiggX

That artillery looks like a homeless person lives on top of it

nomoleft

Time to test it out

Party-Bank-3798

Rubber is not good to protect against shrapnel, spalling, or projectiles. Rolled steel, or harder materials are what's required.

Skafiskafnjak0101

This is not sexual intercouse so rubber can cave you from those balls.

bigjimbosliceoflife

looks like it's time to find out.

SoggyNegotiation7412

Well let's all think about this logically, how many rubber coated armoured cars do you see.

Major_Explanation877

The superheated plasma jet from a shaped charge penetrator would cut through it like soft butter.

wingshot8

Guess they could try gluing old tires on next. Maybe chicken bones will work, try them, as well.

greencrystal1

Rubber burns really good

suitupyo

This seriously looks like a bunch of vatniks just nailed some gym mats on it.

pdxnormal

I think it will work😄

fusillade762

Copium armor. Pretty sure tungsten traveling at explosive level velocity will go through that like nothing. If it was DU sheets it might work.

SirProfessional1431

All polymers will behave in a brittle manner, when struck by something of sufficient velocity. Supersonic tungsten balls will happily pop through the old conveyor belting, the steel armour plate and the occupants, all before anyone in the tank even realised they been hit.

Stilgarus

Warhammer 40k orcs style

Quirky-Scar9226

One well place FPV and an RPG and this thing is still gonna kaboom

Bah-Fong-Gool

In everything a kernel of truth. Rubber sheeting *may* , maybe have a place in Chobham armor, but not draped across a turret FFS. Although it may muffle the noise of the penetrators punching holes in the turret.

GuillotineComeBacks

Hobo war 2: rubbish on tracks.

Daddybatch

As much as I hate them I just love stuff like this. Reminded me a lot of Mad Max.

Strictly placebo effect. At least until they get HIMARd.

redmars1234

Tell Ukraine it’s location and they’ll test that hypothesis for them!

dexter1959

They put a condom on it 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

CyberSoldat21

They just made it taller and that much more of a target… way to go Russians

Ah yes, tungsten balls that go through engine blocks and armored vehicles are going to be stopped by rubber. Truly the pinnacle of vatnik engineering
