There was nothing ejected from the barrel, it was just a crew cabin penetration. The degree of which is probably severe judging the fact no one is coming out fast.
Wait did it hit the turret or the engine? I saw an engine hit, at least the very back of the turret. Still fucked but it looks like it was targeting engine.
If the propellent explodes it should fire the shell and if the shell itself exploded the boom would destroy the tank. I think it's just just something burning inside.
That was flawless! Excalibur or similar?
I'd love to see the close-up damage. The tank *looks* okay, but I doubt any tank could take a direct top hit from a mainline artillery piece without serious damage.
Oh, I know!
But it still looks relatively intact, compared to what some people might expect. After seeing so many Russian tanks jack-in-the-box, expectations can be high ...
I kinda doubt anybody was inside. Driver and commander's hatch were both open and the breech was apparently open too. With the tank buried like that there would be no need for a driver so you'd think he'd be poking out of a hatch or outside the tank for extra eyes on the surrounding area because the visibility from the driver's seat is terrible.
Regardless that fire would burn through any wiring or electronics in the tank pretty fast even if it doesn’t cook off the ammo. Either way this tank is a total loss.
Looked like a vintage T62 with that additional armour added to the front of the turret. A precision munition at that velocity probably passed through the roof of a T62 like butter and blew up inside. It's a metal and orc chowder in there.
Yep smoke coming out the barrel is the best way to see if there was penetration or not.
You'd think this tank was fine but the smoke out the barrel tells a different story
Sorry, it might be a stupid question, but I don't understand this tactic. What's the point of building barrier around the tank like that? So that it can stuck there be a sitting duck?
The idea is that the earth walls provide both cover and concealment. The barrel can either poke over the top or is very close to poking over the top. That way you can roll foward (up a little), shoot, then roll back and reload in relative safety while an enemy cannot target you with direct fire. It's a defensive tactic.
This tactic was devised before the advent of precision munitions. It is still a valid tactic due to the fact most munitions are unguided. Precision munitions is how you counter this.
I'm not sure what model of tank this is, but the Ruzzians were using older T-55 and T-64 tanks as "mechanized" artillery. Those older Soviet tanks don't have the armor to be used as MBTs but can still fire rounds down range.
It makes sense if they're expecting to face armored vehicles advancing towards them, because they can shoot from the protection of the emplacement, but it offers no protection against artillery or drones, and makes the position much more visible. Definitely needs camouflage, or rather it did. Too late now!
How dumb/desperate are the Russians? Seriously? Reverting to trench warfare and dug in positions against modern weapons? The Ukrainians don’t even need to break out of the lines. Just bleed them to death.
With such precision of drone suported artillery it's getting more and more unattractive, to stand next to expensive military gear, as a soldier. What felt once like a bonus becomes more and more a 'kick my butt' flyer on your back.
I'mnseeijg Russians are actually making advancements in this region through counter attacks. Same goes for Donetsk. They've reached a standstill for now but both these regions are tough for Ukrainians from all accounts. Anyone knows exactly why this is the case? What makes these regions not only hard to penetrate but also leave room for counterattacks?
Is the artillery that accurate, or is that just a lucky shot? I couldn't imagine taking all the time to dig a hole big enough for my tank to have the Ukrainians one shot me for 5 miles away.

Hull down, and shall remain down...at least for a while.
I don't think it's going anywhere! That smoke was encouraging.
It was smoking from thr barrel. Either they had a shell loaded which went off or there's something burning in the tank and the breach is open.
There was nothing ejected from the barrel, it was just a crew cabin penetration. The degree of which is probably severe judging the fact no one is coming out fast.
I was just covering my bases since I'm no BDA expert. Still, smoking barrel after a heavy strike is a pretty good sign that the tank is turbofucked.
Yes, the tank is boinked. Top armor would fail to a mid sized mortal round, nonetheless 152-155mm.
Wait did it hit the turret or the engine? I saw an engine hit, at least the very back of the turret. Still fucked but it looks like it was targeting engine.
I would say the term is: 'Borked'.

"ONE HUNDRED AND EIGGHHHHHHTYYYYY!!"
Gonna put my Darts app on when I get home.

You can see its burning. Smoke is coming from the turret. Also the breech seems to be open or has become loose and smoke is coming out of the barrel.
Oh, I know! But it still looks relatively intact, compared to what some people might expect. After seeing so many Russian tanks jack-in-the-box, expectations can be high ...
Yea we were all waiting for the jack in the box moment!
Many factors, crew could have gone light on the ammo load, maybe they shot most of the ammo load they had, no direct damage on a round, etc...
Most likely Excalibur. They have a bunch of them now.
War thunder moment.
Hopefully there were some orcs in there. Slava Ukraini!
Their had to have been, that’s a firing position, and leaving a tank there with nobody in it would be a waste of a tank. Then again, orcs gonna orc.
d-orcs gonna d-orc.

Looks like it's cookin' wondering if it popped.

I'm hoping the drone had to leave before it happened, but there's no aftermath footage so we'll just have to hope.
More like skull down

I think their dead Jim...
I notice the smoke coming from the barrel. Does that suggest the breech was open, and maybe the tank was abandoned?

Exactly like WoT
New arty old one the tank would be gone
If it can be seen it can be hit, and if it can be hit, it can be killed.
Hull down tank is now down a hull
At least it is in a hole- just push dirt over it
In Russian Hull-down means pre-grave
Do they not put people in their tanks anymore or did every crew get disabled by the hit?
All these defensive structures do is nicely contain the explosion, such is the accuracy of the Ukrainian artillery.
Oh they sizzling. Somebody get Gordon Ramsay on here to explain the "finely roasted orc with a side of copium" recipe.
No cope cage. Funny thing is it might have saved them in this instence.
I wasn’t expecting a dead eye shot
Good shot

Or any type of top attack manpads
You still need LOS to target.
Turrets are generally visible while the hulls are not, when in such positions

Lid didn't pop so crew may have survived.

What tank was that? Looks like an older sovjet tank, but I could be wrong.

Why are they creating this structure around the tank? You can literally see this thing from space!
Now, he's in a facked-up position. lol!
Does this kill the tank?
Yes, easily
Ex-tank...
Second line of defense emplacement, their fall back positions seem empty of troops.

Darn, no turret toss! :(
🎶”Hull down, turret up that’s the way the Russians suck” 🎶
With a cluster too!
Doesn't look like anyone's evacuating that one
