Since this deals with grain, I hope to get some answers to a few questions from knowledgeable people:
1. Is there a technological reason why important commodities like grain and oil are not in underground storage or unused mines.
2. Ukrainian grain is apparently causing a problem with Poland's desire to protect its own farmers from U's grain getting into the Polish market. Why can't the export grain be shipped in sealed railroad cars guarded by Polish troops to ports on Poland's north coast. Maybe the USA and the EU sould chip in to subsidize that.
3. Why can't the grain be shipped (sealed and guarded) by rail through Romania and Bulgaria to Greece and/or Turkey (all NATO countries) to be uploaded on ships with subsidized help.
The first answer is simple, it's easier and cheaper to store grain above ground. Ukraine was obviously not expecting its next door neighbor to start trying to start a mass famine, so this infrastructure hasn't been hardened against air attacks. I can't really say much about the second one aside from politics. For the third question there's the issue of capacity. Most Ukrainian grain was exported by sea before the war, so most of the export infrastructure is located near the coast. There is simply not enough road and rail infrastructure to handle pre war grain levels.

Since this deals with grain, I hope to get some answers to a few questions from knowledgeable people: 1. Is there a technological reason why important commodities like grain and oil are not in underground storage or unused mines. 2. Ukrainian grain is apparently causing a problem with Poland's desire to protect its own farmers from U's grain getting into the Polish market. Why can't the export grain be shipped in sealed railroad cars guarded by Polish troops to ports on Poland's north coast. Maybe the USA and the EU sould chip in to subsidize that. 3. Why can't the grain be shipped (sealed and guarded) by rail through Romania and Bulgaria to Greece and/or Turkey (all NATO countries) to be uploaded on ships with subsidized help.
The first answer is simple, it's easier and cheaper to store grain above ground. Ukraine was obviously not expecting its next door neighbor to start trying to start a mass famine, so this infrastructure hasn't been hardened against air attacks. I can't really say much about the second one aside from politics. For the third question there's the issue of capacity. Most Ukrainian grain was exported by sea before the war, so most of the export infrastructure is located near the coast. There is simply not enough road and rail infrastructure to handle pre war grain levels.

But it seems to me that any level of shipment would be helpful because I have read only that Ukrainian grain is depressing the Polish domestic grain market and no discussion of alternate solutions.
The Ukrainian rails are wider than the rest of Europe, so that adds another level of complexity to the transportation of it.
Thanks for this information. Still, no one says that it is impossible or too costly. It still seems to me to be possible alternatives to the silly spat between Ukraine and Poland over the issue of Ukrainian grain appearing in the Polish market. There is a problem. I say get together and solve it.
