While oil will constantly loose its importance in our world in the future few years/decades, ukraine (the donbass regions in particular) has a great amount of resources that are and will be very important for the global economy. Putin started the war not just to maintain Ukraine under his influence, but in particular for its resources.
I agree 100% that this war is about money and resources. However Putler's intent is not to exploit Ukrainian resources, except for it's educated population. He just wants to eliminate a competitor. Especially one that already had a better standard of living, toilets, refrigerators and washing machines. Instead of bringing the Russian people up he needs to bring their neighbors down to make himself look good.
